Hotels in Indonesia: Where to Stay in Every City and Island

Indonesia has an enormous range of accommodation — from USD 10/night guesthouses near Yogyakarta's temples to USD 500/night private-pool villas in Bali. The type of stay shifts dramatically by island: Bali is villa country; Java is hotel and guesthouse territory; Raja Ampat and Komodo are best explored from liveaboards.

Budget travellers are well served across the archipelago. Bali, Yogyakarta, and Lombok all have well-established backpacker infrastructure. Mid-range has improved significantly — boutique guesthouses and design hotels in the IDR 300,000–800,000/night range (approximately USD 20–50) offer excellent value compared to regional benchmarks.

Types of Accommodation

Bali Villas & Boutique Hotels

Bali has one of the world's highest concentrations of boutique villa accommodation. Private pool villas in Seminyak and Canggu start from approximately USD 80–120/night; Ubud's rice-terrace villas and jungle retreats like Komaneka at Bisma and COMO Uma Ubud push into luxury territory. For budget travellers, Kuta and Legian have long-running guesthouses from USD 15–25/night.

Yogyakarta Heritage Hotels

Yogyakarta's hotel scene ranges from budget guesthouses near Prawirotaman to heritage properties like Plataran Heritage Borobudur and The Phoenix. Mid-range options around Jalan Malioboro and the Kraton area (from approximately IDR 300,000–700,000/night) are plentiful. The city is walkable, so central location matters more than star rating.

Lombok & Gili Island Stays

Lombok has developed significantly since the 2018 earthquake. The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno) offer everything from beach bungalows to boutique eco-lodges — no motorised vehicles on any Gili island. Kuta Lombok's surf lodges are expanding fast and the Mandalika area now has international resort brands near the MotoGP circuit.

Liveaboard & Dive Resorts

Raja Ampat, Komodo, and Banda Sea diving is best accessed via liveaboard vessels (from approximately USD 150–350/night per person including meals and diving). Shore-based dive resorts in Tulamben (Bali), Bunaken (Sulawesi), and Labuan Bajo (Flores) offer an alternative. Advance booking essential for peak season (April–November).
