Ende is the largest town on Flores and the gateway to Kelimutu National Park, home to three volcanic crater lakes whose surface colours shift over time due to mineral interactions — turquoise, dark red, and black are among the recorded states. The Kelimutu sunrise is the main draw for most visitors: a 27 km drive from Ende, a 15-minute walk to the crater rim, and a view that depends substantially on luck but delivers powerfully on clear mornings. Accommodation in Ende ranges from simple budget guesthouses clustered near the market and bus terminal to decent mid-range hotels near the port. There is no luxury tier worth mentioning. Sukarno’s exile house (Rumah Pengasingan Sukarno) and the ikat weaving villages nearby round out the visit for those staying two nights.
Town Centre and Port Area
The town centre around Pasar Ende (the main market) and the waterfront near Pelabuhan Ende (the ferry port) contains the bulk of usable accommodation. Guesthouses here are within reach of restaurants, transport connections, and guide services for the Kelimutu sunrise.
Budget (IDR 100,000–250,000/night)
Dwi Putra Hotel — one of the most frequently recommended budget options in Ende, with a helpful front desk that proactively arranges Kelimutu sunrise transport for the following morning. Rooms are basic but clean with fan cooling, private bathrooms, and breakfast included. Approximately IDR 180,000–250,000 per night as of 2026. The staff’s knowledge of current bus schedules and ferry times is genuinely useful for transit planning.
Wisma Flores — simple guesthouse in a quiet lane off the main commercial strip, with plain rooms and a shared bathroom option at the lower price tier. Approximately IDR 120,000–180,000/night. Owners speak reasonable English and understand the Kelimutu logistics well.
Penginapan Ana — small family guesthouse near the centre with rooms at the entry-level Ende price point. Very basic, but clean, and the family are accommodating on early-morning departure logistics for Kelimutu. From approximately IDR 100,000–150,000/night as of 2026.
Mid-Range (IDR 250,000–700,000/night)
Safari Hotel Ende — the most established mid-range hotel in Ende with air-conditioned rooms, hot-water bathrooms, a restaurant serving Indonesian and Chinese-Indonesian dishes, and a front desk experienced in arranging Kelimutu transfers and onward transport bookings. Approximately IDR 350,000–600,000/night as of 2026. The better rooms face the garden rather than the road and are noticeably quieter.
Hotel Flores Mandiri — clean business-style hotel with a central location, air conditioning, private bathrooms, and a breakfast included in rates. Approximately IDR 300,000–500,000/night. Less character than Safari Hotel but reliable standards and a staff that handles tour bookings without fuss.
Grand Wisata Hotel — the most polished mid-range option in Ende’s current market, with comfortable rooms, modern bathrooms, wi-fi that actually works, and a breakfast buffet rather than a set plate. Approximately IDR 450,000–750,000/night as of 2026. Good for those arriving by air from Bali wanting a step above the standard Ende experience.
Upper Range (IDR 700,000–1,500,000/night)
Ende does not have luxury hotels in the international sense, but a small number of boutique properties have opened on the fringes of town with more character and space than the central mid-range stock.
Nangha Resort — a compact resort-style property with private bungalows, a pool, and grounds that separate it from the density of the town centre. Approximately IDR 800,000–1,400,000/night as of 2026. Better suited to travellers who want to decompress after the Trans-Flores overland journey rather than those passing through on a tight schedule. Pre-book — it has limited rooms and fills quickly around the Kelimutu peak season.
Moni Village (Near Kelimutu Trailhead)
Moni sits 13 km from the Kelimutu trailhead and approximately 14 km from the national park gate. Staying in Moni reduces the pre-dawn drive to roughly 20–25 minutes.
Accommodation in Moni is entirely at the guesthouse and homestay level — simple rooms, cold water, limited menus. Pondok Wisata Rainbow and Homestay Kelimutu Indah are among the commonly mentioned options, both charging approximately IDR 150,000–250,000/night including basic meals. Book via phone or WhatsApp; the village has no hotel booking platform presence. Moni suits those doing the full Trans-Flores overland route who want to stop between Bajawa and Maumere without backtracking to Ende for accommodation.
Booking Strategy
Two nights is the right allocation: One night risks a bad-weather Kelimutu day. Two nights gives a backup option if the first morning is clouded out.
Kelimutu peak season (July–August): Both Ende and Moni accommodation fills up. Book at least 3–5 days ahead for any property with more than five rooms. Outside peak season, same-day booking is usually possible.
Cash: Ende has ATMs, but carry enough cash for your full Kelimutu excursion before heading to Moni. Moni has no reliable ATM and card payment is not accepted at any guesthouse in the village.
Onwards travel: Ende connects by bus east to Maumere (approximately 3–4 hours, IDR 60,000–80,000), west to Bajawa (3–4 hours, IDR 60,000–100,000), and by air to Bali via Garuda/Wings Air. Confirm your outbound booking before arriving in Ende — seats and buses fill in peak season.
