Wae Rebo Village Trek: Guide to the Manggarai Mountain Village in Flores
How to trek to Wae Rebo, the traditional Manggarai village on Flores: trail conditions, overnight donation, costs, and what to bring.
Trekking
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire — the archipelago has more active volcanoes than any other country on earth. Trekking up these volcanoes is one of the most compelling experiences in Southeast Asia: pre-dawn crater climbs on Bromo, the blue sulphuric fire of Kawah Ijen, and the crater lake summit of Rinjani on Lombok are in a different league from most hikes in the region.
Most volcano treks require a licensed local guide — both for safety (gases, terrain) and legal reasons (many sites mandate it). Guides are arranged through operators in the nearest town. Rinjani requires a 2–3 day commitment with camping; Bromo and Ijen are accessible in a single pre-dawn excursion. Batur on Bali is the most accessible option for a half-day sunrise trek.
Indonesia's best volcano hikes and trekking routes — from half-day sunrise climbs to multi-day expeditions.
