Indonesia — and Bali in particular — is one of the world's most established digital nomad destinations. Canggu and Ubud have some of the highest concentrations of coworking spaces per capita of any city on earth. Reliable fibre internet, a thriving community of remote workers, year-round warm weather, and a cost of living that makes Southeast Asian cities look expensive make Bali a natural long-stay choice.
Indonesia's visa situation for long-term nomads has improved significantly. The Second Home Visa (5–10 year renewable), Social Budaya Visa (6 months, extendable), and the Digital Nomad Visa allow extended legal stays. The most popular route is the 60-day tourist visa on arrival, extended once at immigration for a maximum of 60 additional days. Bali is the epicentre, but Yogyakarta, Lombok, and even Ubud have active nomad communities.
Practical Information for Remote Workers
Visa Options
Most nationalities get a 30-day visa on arrival (extendable to 60 days at immigration for approximately IDR 500,000). The B211A Social Budaya Visa allows 60-day stays extendable up to 6 months. Indonesia's Digital Nomad Visa allows stays of up to 6 months with proof of foreign income. The Second Home Visa (IDR 3 billion bank balance required) covers 5–10 years. Check current requirements at the nearest Indonesian embassy — rules change frequently.
SIM Cards & Internet
Telkomsel has the widest national coverage and is the recommended choice for SIMs across Indonesia. XL Axiata and Indosat are solid alternatives. Tourist SIMs are available at airports, convenience stores (Indomaret, Alfamart), and phone shops. Data plans are very affordable — approximately IDR 100,000–150,000 ($6–9) for 20–50GB monthly packages. Fibre internet in Bali coworking spaces is generally fast and reliable.
Coworking in Canggu
Canggu (Bali) is the global capital of nomad coworking. Dojo Bali (24/7, from approximately IDR 600,000/day or IDR 1,800,000/month) is the most established. Outpost Canggu offers day passes and monthly memberships. Serenity Eco Guesthouse has a good work cafe. Most spaces have fast fibre, air-con, and standing desks. Competition keeps prices competitive compared to European coworking.
Coworking in Ubud
Ubud has a more creative and wellness-oriented nomad community than Canggu. Hubud (Jalan Monkey Forest, from approximately IDR 500,000/day) is the most famous. Outpost Ubud on Jalan Raya Penestanan offers modern facilities in rice-terrace surroundings. Kafe Ubud and Seniman Coffee Studio are the best work-from-cafe options. Internet reliability in Ubud can be patchier than Canggu — have a Telkomsel mobile hotspot as backup.
Cost of Living
Bali is significantly cheaper than Western countries but more expensive than Vietnam or Thailand for equivalent quality. Budget: USD 800–1,200/month (shared accommodation, warung food, motorbike). Mid-range: USD 1,500–2,500/month (private villa with pool, restaurant meals, scooter + occasional Grab). Comfortable: USD 2,500–4,000/month in Seminyak or Canggu with all amenities. Yogyakarta and most of Java cost roughly 30–40% less than Bali.
Transport & Getting Around
A motorbike is essential for Bali — daily rental from approximately IDR 60,000–80,000 ($4–5), monthly from IDR 500,000–800,000. Grab and Gojek ride-hailing work well in Bali, Jakarta, and major cities. Inter-island transport: Bali to Lombok by fast boat 2 hours; Bali to Labuan Bajo via Lion Air 1.5 hours. Budget airlines (Lion Air, Batik Air) connect major islands at very low fares — often IDR 200,000–500,000 ($12–30) booked a week ahead.
