Ubud’s accommodation scene is one of the most varied in Bali. You can sleep in a family compound guesthouse for under USD 20, a rice terrace villa for USD 80, or an award-winning resort for USD 700. The key decisions are budget and location — Ubud is not a single place but a cluster of adjacent villages spread across hilly terrain, and staying in the wrong spot can mean a 30-minute walk to anything worth eating.
Best Areas to Stay
Jl Bisma (Quiet, Rice Terrace Views)
Running west from the central market, Bisma Road drops steeply into a river valley before climbing back up through forest. Accommodation here is quieter than the main drag, and many properties have uninterrupted rice paddy views from their breakfast terraces. The trade-off is that everything requires a short uphill walk back into town. Best for: couples, anyone prioritising atmosphere over convenience.
Central Ubud (Jl Raya Ubud & Jl Monkey Forest)
The most walkable area — Ubud Palace, the main market, and the majority of restaurants and cafés are within 10–15 minutes on foot. Noise from scooters and tourist traffic is noticeable during the day. Best for: first-time visitors who want to walk everywhere without relying on transport.
Penestanan (Artist Village)
A ten-minute walk west of centre across a suspension bridge, Penestanan retains some of the quieter village character that central Ubud has largely traded away. A small community of artists and long-term expat residents gives it a different feel. Accommodation options are limited but include some excellent mid-range villas. Best for: return visitors, those who want calm and don’t mind a short walk back.
Budget (Under USD 30/Night)
Pondok Pundi Village Inn
A family-run compound guesthouse with bungalow-style rooms set in a small garden near the Campuhan Ridge Walk. Simple, clean, and run with genuine warmth. Rooms from approximately IDR 250,000–350,000/night. Shared and private bathroom options available.
Sahadewa Cottage
Located on the quieter eastern side of Ubud, Sahadewa offers basic bungalows with Balinese carved woodwork and small garden terraces. A good base for those prioritising savings — proximity to the main street means easy access to restaurants and transport. From approximately IDR 250,000/night.
Nick’s Pension
A long-standing backpacker favourite near the main market. Rooms are small and simply furnished, but the location makes it useful for those arriving late or leaving early. No frills, but reliable and central. From approximately IDR 200,000/night.
Mid-Range (USD 40–100/Night)
Bisma Eight
One of the most photographed properties in Ubud — an infinity pool perched over the Wos River valley with rice terrace views behind it. The rooms themselves are spacious and well-maintained. The breakfast, served on the terrace, is exceptional. From approximately USD 80/night. Book well ahead in high season (July–August, Christmas–New Year).
Alaya Resort Ubud
A design-conscious boutique resort on Jl Hanoman, walking distance from the palace and market. Rooms are generously sized with high-quality linens; the central pool is shaded by mature trees. A reliable choice when you want comfort without the full luxury price. From approximately USD 60/night.
Komaneka at Bisma
Technically straddling mid-range and luxury depending on room category, Komaneka’s hillside setting and level of finish make it stand out. The design draws on traditional Balinese architectural forms without becoming theme-park pastiche. From approximately USD 90/night for entry rooms; higher for suites with private plunge pools.
Luxury (USD 150+/Night)
COMO Uma Ubud
Set in a tropical garden with rice paddy views, COMO Uma offers the brand’s signature combination of wellness programming (COMO Shambhala retreat activities) and understated design. The restaurant sources locally and executes well. From approximately USD 400/night as of 2026.
Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan
Possibly the most dramatic arrival of any hotel in Bali — guests cross a footbridge suspended over the Ayung River gorge to reach the main building. The villa pool decks hang over the river, and the sound of water is constant. From approximately USD 700/night as of 2026. Worth checking seasonal promotions if the headline rate is prohibitive.
Alila Ubud
Perched on a ridge above the Ayung River, Alila offers private villa accommodation in a more secluded setting than most Ubud properties. Strong spa and yoga programme. From approximately USD 250/night as of 2026.
Practical Booking Notes
High season: July–August and the Christmas–New Year period see rates increase significantly across all categories and availability tighten at mid-range and luxury properties. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July, earlier for the Christmas period.
Low season: November–March (wet season) brings lower rates — often 20–30% below the high-season price — and fewer crowds at temples and terraces. Rain falls mainly in short afternoon bursts rather than all day, and mornings are typically clear.
Transfers: Most properties will arrange airport pickup from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The drive to Ubud takes 45 minutes–1.5 hours depending on traffic. Confirm a fixed price before departure — approximately IDR 250,000–350,000 is standard for a private transfer as of 2026.
Check-in times: Standard check-in is 2–3pm. If you arrive early from an overnight flight, most properties will store luggage and allow pool use while your room is prepared — call ahead to arrange.
