Where to Stay in Bandung: Accommodation Guide
Bandung sits at 768 metres above sea level in a volcanic basin, which gives it a noticeably cooler climate than Jakarta. That temperature drop — along with a good food scene, strong café culture, and reasonable prices — makes it one of the more comfortable Indonesian cities to spend a few nights in. The hotel market ranges from Rp 150,000 budget guesthouses to international five-star properties, and the area you choose matters as much as the property itself.
Understanding Bandung’s Neighbourhoods
Dago and North Bandung is the part of the city most visitors with time prefer. The air is cooler because the elevation is higher, the streets are tree-lined, and you’re within 20–30 minutes of the Tangkuban Perahu crater and the tea plantations around Ciwidey. The neighbourhood also has some of Bandung’s best cafés and restaurants. The trade-off is distance from the main shopping areas around Pasteur and Cicendo.
Braga and the city centre puts you on the most walkable and visually interesting street in Bandung. Braga is a colonial-era strip of Dutch-influenced shophouses now occupied by cafés, restaurants, boutiques, and the city’s small arts scene. It’s noisier and denser than Dago, but everything is within walking distance and evening food options are excellent.
Pasteur and the airport area is the least atmospheric option but makes practical sense if you’re arriving or departing early. Several budget chain properties here, and the toll road connection to Jakarta is fast.
Budget (from Rp 150,000–350,000)
Gino Feruci Braga (from Rp 300,000 as of 2026) is a solid mid-budget option on Jalan Braga itself — a step above the chain properties, with clean rooms and a central location you can actually use without a car. Book directly for slightly better rates.
OYO and Reddoorz properties throughout the city start from around Rp 150,000 per night as of 2026. Quality varies significantly between properties within these chains — read recent reviews before booking. Both aggregators are reliable for filtering by exact location; search for Dago or Braga specifically if you want to avoid being placed in an outlying district.
Budget travellers should be aware that Bandung’s cheapest accommodation tends to cluster around Jalan Kebon Kawung near the train station — useful if you’re arriving by rail from Jakarta.
Mid-Range (from USD 50–80)
Harris Hotel Bandung (from USD 50 as of 2026) is a reliable Indonesian chain property with consistent standards across all its properties. Rooms are functional and clean, breakfast is included in most rates, and the staff are used to dealing with international guests. It’s a good anchor if you want reliability without surprises.
Grand Tjokro Bandung (from USD 60 as of 2026) sits near Dago and represents good value in this bracket. The rooms are larger than most mid-range properties in the city, and the neighbourhood means you’re better placed for coffee-shop days and trips north.
Padma Hotel Bandung (from USD 80 as of 2026) is the standout mid-range-to-upper choice if you want to splurge slightly. The property sits on a hillside in north Bandung with a genuine view over the valley, and its pool and garden area are significantly nicer than most comparable properties. The buffet breakfast is above average for the price point.
Luxury (from USD 100)
Four Points by Sheraton Bandung (from USD 100 as of 2026) offers the Marriott loyalty programme and consistent international standards. The location is central, the gym and pool are well-maintained, and business travellers in particular find the facilities appropriate. Not the most characterful choice in the city, but dependably solid.
InterContinental Bandung Dago Pakar (from USD 150 as of 2026) is the most distinctive luxury property in Bandung. It sits at the northern edge of the city near the Dago Pakar nature area, at an elevation that gives noticeably cooler air than downtown. The rooms are spacious, the grounds include forest walking paths, and the overall feel is a genuine retreat rather than a standard business hotel. Worth the premium if you plan to spend time in north Bandung rather than the commercial centre.
Practical Notes
Bandung traffic during weekends is genuinely severe — Jakarta residents drive up en masse from Friday afternoon through Sunday, and the roads into the city can add two or three hours to what maps suggest. If arriving by car or private transfer, time your entry for mid-morning weekdays where possible.
The Bandung train station (Stasiun Bandung) is central and well-connected, with Argo Parahyangan trains running to Jakarta Gambir multiple times daily in under three hours. Staying near Jalan Braga puts you within a short ride of the station.
Gojek and Grab operate throughout the city and are the standard way to get around once you’re settled. Prices are low — a cross-city ride typically costs under Rp 30,000.
