Lovina is north Bali’s main beach resort area - a loose cluster of villages (Anturan, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem, Temukus) along a protected stretch of the Bali Sea coast where the trade winds keep the water calmer than the Indian Ocean beaches in the south. The beach is black volcanic sand rather than white, the water is genuinely swimmable, and the atmosphere is a significant step quieter than Kuta, Seminyak, or even Ubud.
The accommodation market here is almost entirely composed of small family guesthouses and modest boutique hotels - no international chains, no beach clubs, no 400-room resorts. Prices are among the lowest for beachfront rooms anywhere on the island.
Kalibukbuk: The Main Lovina Hub
Kalibukbuk is the village at the heart of the Lovina strip - most restaurants, shops, and the main dolphin-watching departure point are here. It’s the logical base for first-time Lovina visitors.
Budget - Kalibukbuk (IDR 100,000–300,000/night)
Rambutan Boutique Hotel - well-maintained small hotel with pool, central Kalibukbuk location. Rates approximately IDR 200,000–400,000/night. One of the most consistently reviewed properties in Lovina for its combination of cleanliness, pool, and central location.
Celuk Agung Bungalows - traditional bungalows in a garden setting close to the beach access. Fan and air-conditioned rooms from approximately IDR 120,000–250,000/night. Simple and clean; good for solo travellers or budget-focused couples.
Padang Lovina Villas - small villa property with 8 units, garden, and pool. Rates approximately IDR 250,000–450,000/night. A slight upgrade from the basic guesthouse tier at still-affordable prices.
Mid-Range - Kalibukbuk (IDR 350,000–900,000/night)
Bali Lovina Beach Cottages - established resort-scale property on the beachfront: 35 cottages, pool, and a restaurant. Rates approximately IDR 450,000–800,000/night. The beachfront position and pool combination make this one of the stronger mid-range choices in the Kalibukbuk area. The cottages have a traditional Balinese architectural character. Breakfast typically included.
Puri Bagus Lovina - the standout mid-to-upper property in Lovina: 30 villas and suites on the beachfront, garden pool, spa, and the Octopus restaurant. Rates approximately IDR 800,000–2,000,000/night. A genuine upgrade from the standard Lovina guesthouse experience while retaining the north Bali quietness. The spa is one of the best on this stretch.
Anturan and Kaliasem: Village-Side Options
Anturan (east of Kalibukbuk) and Kaliasem (west) are quieter village zones within the Lovina umbrella - fewer restaurants immediately adjacent, but typically lower rates and a more local neighbourhood atmosphere.
Budget–Mid - Anturan (IDR 100,000–350,000/night)
Gede Homestay (Anturan) - family-run operation with garden rooms and a small pool. Rates approximately IDR 120,000–200,000/night for basic rooms. Genuinely local feel and among the lowest prices for this level of cleanliness in Lovina. The hosts can arrange dolphin tours directly.
Lovina Beach Hotel (Anturan) - mid-range with 20 rooms, a beach-facing pool, and a restaurant. Rates approximately IDR 250,000–450,000/night. Reliable and reasonably priced; popular with Dutch and German visitors who constitute a significant proportion of Lovina’s repeat international visitor base.
Mid-Range - Kaliasem (IDR 400,000–1,200,000/night)
Damai Lovina Villas (hillside above Kaliasem) - 8 private villas on a terraced hillside above the coast with a mountain-to-sea view that is genuinely one of north Bali’s most impressive from a hotel property. Organic gardens, a pool, and a restaurant that sources locally. Rates approximately IDR 1,500,000–3,000,000/night. A special property for travellers willing to pay a premium for the view and the concept.
Hillside and Inland: Munduk Day-Trip Base
Lovina’s hinterland within 20–30 km includes Munduk (waterfall trekking), the Brahma Vihara Arama monastery, the Banjar hot springs, and the lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan. Staying in Lovina is a practical base for all of these.
Warwick Ibah Luxury Villas & Spa (near Singaraja/Lovina approach) - 12 villas in a terraced compound with river views. Rates approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000/night. Suited to couples wanting a north Bali base with high-quality facilities.
Getting Here: Airport and South Bali to Lovina
From Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS): approximately 85–90 km, 2–2.5 hours.
- Private driver - the standard option. Book through your guesthouse or Klook. Costs approximately IDR 350,000–500,000 one way from the airport.
- Rented scooter - the preferred option for travellers arriving from Ubud, Bedugul, or Singaraja rather than from the airport. The Singaraja road from central Bali via Pupuan offers a scenic route.
- Perama shuttle - Perama operates a tourist shuttle between Kuta/Seminyak and Lovina for approximately IDR 125,000 per person. Departs twice daily from specific pickup points. Slowest but cheapest public option. Book ahead.
From Ubud to Lovina is approximately 70 km and 2 hours - a scenic drive through Bedugul and the mountain lakes that many visitors combine into a route.
Getting Around Lovina
The Lovina strip stretches approximately 8 km along the coast. Kalibukbuk is the walkable centre, but getting between villages requires transport.
- Scooter rental - IDR 60,000–75,000/day. Most guesthouses can arrange it.
- Bemo (shared minivan) - the local public transport along the coast road between Singaraja and the Lovina villages. Infrequent and not suited to anyone with luggage.
- Grab/Gojek - work in Lovina but less reliably than in south Bali. Allow extra time for pickups, especially early morning dolphin tours.
