Best Hotels in Lovina: Where to Stay in North Bali's Quietest Resort

· 5 min read City Guide
Black sand beach with volcanic rock cliffs, Bali, Indonesia

Lovina is North Bali’s main resort area, a cluster of small villages — Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem, and a few others — that merged over time into a loose strip along the coast. It sits about 2.5 hours by road from Denpasar, far enough that most South Bali tourists never make it. That distance is the reason to stay here: Lovina is genuinely quiet.

The black sand beach, sheltered bay, and cooler highland temperatures make it a different experience from South Bali’s surf resorts. The town is small enough to walk most of it. Restaurants close early. The pace is slow. For some travellers this is exactly what they want after a week in Seminyak; for others it is simply too far from everything.

What Lovina Offers

The dolphin watching at sunrise is the headline activity — outrigger boats leave at around 5:30am and spinner dolphins are common in the bay during the calm season (April–October). It’s crowded in the sense that 30–40 boats converge on the same patch of water, but it’s still a genuine wildlife encounter.

Beyond the dolphins: Gitgit Waterfall is 20 minutes south by car (free access, IDR 20,000 parking). Bedugul and Lake Bratan highland temples are 45 minutes. Singaraja — Bali’s second city and former Dutch colonial capital — is 15 minutes east. Buddhist temple Brahma Vihara Arama, the only Buddhist monastery in Bali, is 8 kilometres west and worth the visit.

Getting to Lovina

From Denpasar/South Bali: Approximately 2.5–3 hours by car heading north via Bedugul. A private car (arranged through your hotel or a Bali driver) costs approximately IDR 400,000–600,000 one way. Perama shuttle buses run from Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud for approximately IDR 100,000–130,000 per person.

From Ubud: About 2.5 hours by car through the central highlands. Book a private driver or shuttle — Grab is unreliable in this part of Bali.

From Singaraja: Lovina is 15 kilometres west of Singaraja (Bali’s northern capital). Regular bemo (local minibus) services connect the two for approximately IDR 10,000–15,000. Ojek (motorbike taxi) costs approximately IDR 30,000–50,000.

Practical Notes

Lovina closes early. Most restaurants stop taking orders by 9–10pm and bars are quiet by 11pm. This is not a place for nightlife. The main street (Jalan Raya Lovina in Kalibukbuk) has ATMs, money changers, and dive operators.

Scooter rental runs approximately IDR 60,000–80,000 per day. With a scooter you can reach Gitgit, Singaraja, Bedugul, and the west Bali temples at Munduk without needing to pay for transport each time.

The snorkelling off Lovina Beach is adequate (visibility 3–5 metres) but the best diving in North Bali is at the Menjangan Island dive sites in West Bali National Park, about 90 minutes west by car. If you want to pre-book the sunrise dolphin watching trip or other Lovina activities, book at least a day ahead — boats fill up during peak season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lovina worth visiting?
Yes if you want the opposite of Seminyak. Lovina has a calm black sand beach, some of the most reliable dolphin sightings in Bali, close access to Gitgit Waterfall and Bedugul highlands, and accommodation prices roughly 40–60% lower than South Bali equivalents. It's not the right choice if you want surf or a beach club scene.
What is Lovina famous for?
Dolphin watching at sunrise. Outrigger boats depart at around 5:30am to meet spinner dolphins in the bay — sightings are not guaranteed but are common on calm mornings. The experience is best April–October when seas are calmer. Boats cost approximately IDR 100,000–150,000 per person as of 2026.
How far is Lovina from Ubud?
Approximately 2.5–3 hours by car, crossing the central highlands via Bedugul. The drive is scenic — you pass Lake Bratan and the highland temple Pura Ulun Danu. Direct shuttle buses run once or twice daily for approximately IDR 100,000 per person.
What is the beach like in Lovina?
Lovina's beach is black volcanic sand — typical of north Bali's volcanic coastline. The sea is calm and sheltered, suitable for swimming and snorkelling. There is no surf here. The beach can be quiet to the point of empty on weekday mornings, which is either a feature or a problem depending on your expectations.
