Padang is West Sumatra’s capital and the largest city on Sumatra’s western coast - a port city with a strong Minangkabau cultural identity, extraordinary food, and one of Indonesia’s most underestimated old town quarters in the Pondok area along the Muaro River. For international visitors it serves two primary roles: as a cultural and culinary destination in its own right, and as the gateway to the Mentawai Islands for world-class surf.
The accommodation market spans from budget guesthouses targeting backpackers and domestic travellers to solid business hotels. True luxury is limited - there are no international five-star brands - but the quality mid-range tier is well developed.
City Centre: Jalan Pemuda and Jalan Veteran
Padang’s main commercial hotel cluster runs along Jalan Pemuda, Jalan Veteran, and the streets between the main market and the waterfront. This is the most practical base for city exploration.
Budget - City Centre (IDR 150,000–350,000/night)
Bunda Hotel - clean and central, long-established in the budget-mid corridor. Air-conditioned rooms from approximately IDR 150,000–250,000/night. The location on Jalan Pemuda is walkable to the old Pondok trading quarter and a cluster of authentic Nasi Padang restaurants. No pool; primarily functional.
Hotel Hang Tuah - reliable mid-budget with 35 rooms and a central location. Rates approximately IDR 200,000–320,000/night. Breakfast sometimes included. A consistent choice for backpackers and budget business travellers.
Hotel Pangeran City - larger property with 60 rooms. Mid-budget pricing at approximately IDR 250,000–400,000/night. Restaurant on-site serving the obligatory Nasi Padang for breakfast. Well-maintained for the price.
Mid-Range - City Centre (IDR 400,000–900,000/night)
Pangeran Beach Hotel (seafront, Muaro area) - 176 rooms on the coast road with views across the Indian Ocean. Pool, restaurant, and reliable service. Rates approximately IDR 500,000–850,000/night. One of the most established upper-mid properties in Padang. The beach access is modest, but the ocean-facing position and pool combination make this the default choice for travellers who want more than a basic city hotel.
Mercure Padang (city centre) - Accor’s main Padang property: 150 rooms, pool, gym, and business centre. Rates approximately IDR 600,000–1,000,000/night. Reliable international-chain standard; the best option in the city for business travellers who need consistent connectivity and meeting facilities.
Luxury - Padang (from USD 60/night)
Bumiminang Hotel (central Padang) - one of the city’s larger upper-end properties: 180 rooms with pool, multiple restaurants, and a ballroom. Rates approximately USD 60–90/night (IDR 960,000–1,450,000). Not a global luxury brand, but well-run and the best overall facilities in central Padang. Popular for government and corporate events.
Muaro Padang: The Old Waterfront Quarter
The Muaro (river mouth) area at the edge of the old trading quarter is the most atmospheric part of Padang for visitors interested in the city’s colonial and Minangkabau architectural heritage. The old shophouse rows (ruko) along the waterfront and the Chinese temple clusters date to the late Dutch colonial era.
Mid-Range - Muaro Area (IDR 350,000–800,000/night)
Hotel Padang (near Muaro) - an older city hotel with character and a convenient location near the harbour. Rates approximately IDR 350,000–550,000/night. Not the most modern facilities but the location near the old city and the Mentawai fast boat departures is useful for surf-bound visitors.
The Axana Hotel Padang - the standout newer property near the Muaro area. 108 rooms, pool, spa. Rates approximately IDR 600,000–900,000/night. One of the best combinations of location and quality currently in the city’s mid-range tier.
Airmanis Beach: Quieter Coastal Option
Pantai Airmanis (Air Manis Beach), approximately 5 km south of the city centre, is a quieter coastal area at the base of Gunung Padang. The beach here is the site of the famous Malin Kundang legend statue and has a more local feel than the city centre hotels.
Budget–Mid - Airmanis (IDR 200,000–600,000/night)
Tretes Hotel (Airmanis area) - small property near the beach. Rates approximately IDR 250,000–400,000/night. Better suited to leisure visitors who want a coastal atmosphere over city convenience.
Getting Here: Minangkabau Airport to Padang
Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) is approximately 23 km north of Padang city centre in Padang Pariaman regency.
- Grab or Gojek - approximately IDR 60,000–90,000 for the 30–40 minute journey to the city centre. The most practical option; the Grab zone is clearly signposted outside arrivals.
- Damri Airport Bus - public bus service from the airport directly to central Padang. Fare approximately IDR 15,000–25,000. Journey time 45–60 minutes with stops. Best value but slowest; good for solo travellers with light luggage.
- Metered taxi - available from the official rank. Fare to central Padang approximately IDR 90,000–130,000. Honest, reliable.
The airport also serves as the gateway for day trips or onward travel to Bukittinggi (90 km north, 1.5–2 hours by Grab or shared minivan), home of the famous Padang Highlands scenery and the Jam Gadang clock tower.
Getting Around Padang
The city centre is compact enough that the main sights (Pondok old quarter, central market, cathedral, waterfront) are walkable from most central hotels. For the Airmanis beach, Muaro harbour, and outer neighbourhoods, Grab and Gojek work efficiently.
Padang has a functional city infrastructure and traffic is manageable compared to Sumatran cities like Medan. Grab rides within the city typically cost IDR 15,000–35,000.
