Munduk is Bali’s most rewarding highland retreat — a village of 3,000 people in the north-central mountains, surrounded by working clove, coffee, and cacao plantations, with a network of waterfall trails threading through the jungle below the ridge. It sits at 850 metres, cool enough for proper hiking and misty enough on mornings that the valleys below disappear into cloud.
The accommodation scene here is exceptional for a village this size: a concentration of well-designed plantation lodges, private villas with valley views, and some of the most atmospheric guesthouses in Bali. Nothing here is part of a chain. Everything is owner-operated, often on family land that has grown cloves for generations.
Munduk Village: Plantation Lodges and Highland Guesthouses
The main Munduk village ridge road has the highest concentration of lodges, with properties facing north toward the sea and south toward the volcanic interior.

Mid-Range (IDR 450,000–1,200,000/night)
Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa — the most celebrated property in Munduk, set in an active clove and coffee plantation on the ridge above the village. 20 private bungalows and villas with valley views and outdoor bathtubs. Pool with panoramic views over the plantations. Approximately IDR 1,000,000–2,200,000/night. This is the benchmark highland resort in north Bali and books out weeks in advance during peak season.
Lumbung Sari Munduk Bali — 10 private bungalows built in traditional Balinese lumbung (rice granary) style, surrounded by coffee and clove trees. Outdoor bathrooms with tropical garden showers, valley views, infinity pool. Approximately IDR 700,000–1,300,000/night. Less formal than Munduk Moding but equally atmospheric.
Bali Mountain Retreat — 8 standalone villas in a terraced garden setting, each with private outdoor bath and mountain views. Excellent for couples who want privacy in a highland setting. Approximately IDR 600,000–1,100,000/night.
Srikandi Bungalows — a well-regarded mid-range option with pool and a restaurant that’s popular with day visitors. Positioned for good sunset views across the valley. Approximately IDR 450,000–750,000/night.

Munduk Moding Plantation Pool Villas — the premium tier of the plantation resort, private pool villas with unobstructed views over the full valley extending to the sea on clear days. Approximately IDR 2,000,000–4,000,000/night. Often pre-booked for honeymoons and anniversary stays.
Near Aling-Aling Waterfall
The area around Aling-Aling Falls (approximately 30 minutes north of Munduk by road, in Sambangan village) has developed its own small cluster of homestays for visitors who want to base themselves at the waterfall rather than in the village:
Aling-Aling Ecolodge — bamboo bungalow-style accommodation near the falls entry point, simple rooms, meals on request. Approximately IDR 200,000–350,000/night. The draw is immediate waterfall access at dawn before day visitors arrive.
Around Danau Tamblingan and Lake Buyan

- Motorbike in Munduk: Available to rent from some guesthouses for approximately IDR 60,000–80,000/day. The highland roads are steep in sections — don’t attempt unfamiliar routes after dark.
- Walking: Most waterfall trailheads within the village area are walkable. Ask your accommodation host for a hand-drawn trail map.
