The Novotel is the standard reference point for the city’s mid-to-upper tier. Grand Jatra Hotel Balikpapan - the flagship upper property in Balikpapan: 207 rooms and suites with a large pool, rooftop, spa, and multiple dining venues. Rates approximately USD 80–130/night (IDR 1,300,000–2,100,000). The highest quality business hotel in the city; widely used for major government and corporate events in the region. The rooftop bar has views across the Makassar Strait.
Hotel Gran Senyiur (upper-tier version) - the larger Gran Senyiur property with superior rooms and suite options. Rates approximately USD 70–110/night. Slightly below the Grand Jatra in profile but competitive on price.
Sepinggan: Airport-Adjacent Zone
The Sepinggan area near the airport is useful for travellers with early morning flights, late arrivals, or very short stays.
Mid-Range - Sepinggan (IDR 350,000–800,000/night)
Aston Balikpapan Hotel and Residence (Sepinggan) - 150 suites and apartments near the airport corridor. Rates approximately IDR 450,000–800,000/night. Practical for airport-adjacent stays; slightly outside the city centre social scene but well maintained.

Manggar Beach Area: Coastal Option
Pantai Manggar, approximately 15 km east of the city, is Balikpapan’s main public beach area and has a small cluster of hotels suited to leisure rather than business travel.

Hotel Raflesia Indah (Manggar) - beachside hotel with 40 rooms and a pool. Rates approximately IDR 450,000–750,000/night. The beach location makes this the best Balikpapan option for those whose priority is access to coastal areas rather than the city centre.
Getting Here: Balikpapan Airport
Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Airport (BPN) handles domestic connections from across Indonesia and selected international routes (primarily Kuala Lumpur and Singapore).
- Grab or Gojek - the most reliable option for city-bound journeys. Fares from the airport to Klandasan run approximately IDR 30,000–50,000 (20–30 minutes). The designated pickup zone is on the upper level of the airport car park.
- Metered taxi - Blue Bird operates at the official rank. Metered fares to central Balikpapan approximately IDR 60,000–90,000.
- Hotel transfers - most upper-tier and business hotels offer airport pickup. Rates typically IDR 100,000–200,000. Worth using for late arrivals.
Balikpapan is a well-functioning Indonesian city with a reliable transport infrastructure - Grab and metered taxis work consistently and traffic, while sometimes heavy in the afternoon, is generally manageable compared to Jakarta.
Getting Around Balikpapan
Grab and Gojek are the practical day-to-day transport within the city. A ride between Klandasan and the Manggar beach area costs approximately IDR 25,000–40,000. Traffic on the main Jalan Jenderal Sudirman corridor can be heavy during morning and evening rush hours.
For day trips to Samboja Lestari (orangutan rehabilitation centre, 1.5 hours), hiring a private car is recommended - approximately IDR 400,000–600,000 for a half-day including the driver’s waiting time.
