Canggu has evolved from a quiet surf village into Bali’s most prominent base for digital nomads, long-stay travellers, and the surf-and-yoga demographic. The accommodation market reflects this - a mix of co-living hostels, private pool villas, boutique hotels, and simple homestays, spread across several distinct zones that vary considerably in atmosphere and walkability.

The key decision in Canggu is which zone suits your trip. Berawa and Batu Bolong give you the most within walking range. Pererenan offers more space and quiet at a slight price premium for the same villa quality. Seseh and Cemagi are strictly for those who want a private villa and do not mind driving everywhere.

For comparison with other Bali areas, see our Bali accommodation zone overview.

Canggu’s Main Zones

Berawa and Batu Bolong form the heart of Canggu’s social scene. Jalan Batu Bolong runs from the coast inland and is lined with cafes, juice bars, yoga studios, and surf shops. Echo Beach and Batu Bolong Beach are both within walking distance. This is the most convenient zone for day-to-day life without a scooter, though streets are narrow and traffic is dense from mid-morning. Most mid-range hotel-style properties in Canggu concentrate here.

Pererenan sits 2–3 km north of Batu Bolong along the coast road. The density drops sharply - rice paddies, villa compounds behind green walls, and a more local village character. The beach at Pererenan has good surf and fewer crowds than Echo Beach. Scooter or Grab access is effectively essential here. Popular with families and travellers on longer stays who prefer a quieter compound.

Seseh and Cemagi extend further north into genuinely rural Bali. Very little street-level infrastructure - the accommodation here is almost entirely private villa rentals aimed at groups or couples wanting seclusion. Some of Bali’s more exclusive boutique properties are located in this corridor.

Budget Accommodation in Canggu (IDR 180,000–500,000/night)

Dojo Bali (Batu Bolong area) - the flagship co-living and co-working property in Canggu and the dominant option for budget and digital nomad travellers. Dorm beds run approximately IDR 180,000–280,000/night. Private rooms start from approximately IDR 450,000–600,000/night. The co-working space is available to guests and day-pass visitors. Facilities include a pool, podcast studio, and regular community events. Dojo is the right choice if coworking access and a ready-made social scene matter - it is consistently occupied by a mix of remote workers, freelancers, and long-term Bali regulars. Book at least 1–2 weeks ahead for private rooms in peak season.

Homestays on Jalan Batu Bolong back lanes - small family-run guesthouses occupy the residential lanes between Jalan Batu Bolong and the rice fields. Rates typically run IDR 200,000–350,000/night for a private air-conditioned room. Quality varies considerably - read recent reviews carefully before booking. These properties rarely appear on major OTAs; Instagram and Facebook groups (search “Canggu long stay accommodation”) or arriving in person are sometimes the best routes in. Wi-fi is variable.

Seasonal note at budget tier: In peak July–August and December–January, budget options in Canggu become genuinely scarce. Dojo’s private rooms are often fully booked 2–3 weeks ahead. Travellers flexible on location should consider Seminyak or Kuta as a budget base and day-trip to Canggu, or book Dojo dorms well in advance.

Mid-Range Accommodation in Canggu (IDR 500,000–2,500,000/night)

Alaya Resort Canggu (Batu Bolong area) - a polished boutique hotel in the centre of Canggu’s most walkable zone. 30 rooms, rooftop pool, and a restaurant. Rates run approximately IDR 800,000–1,500,000/night depending on room type and season. The location makes it the closest thing to a conventional hotel experience in central Canggu - more reliable than a villa rental if you are travelling solo or as a couple and do not need kitchen facilities. Breakfast is included in most rate plans.

The Layar Canggu - villa-style accommodation on a lush compound, approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,000,000/night for a one-bedroom villa with private pool. Better suited to couples or pairs than solo travellers due to the villa format. Staff are attentive and the property is well-maintained. The position is slightly removed from the busiest streets, which reduces noise at night.

Villa compounds in Pererenan - private pool villas for 1–2 bedrooms run IDR 600,000–1,800,000/night across various compounds. These are typically rented through Airbnb or direct villa management companies rather than standard OTAs. At IDR 800,000–1,200,000/night for a one-bedroom with pool, this tier represents Canggu’s strongest value proposition - equivalent-quality villas in Seminyak often run 20–30% more. The trade-off is needing a scooter or relying on Grab (easily arranged).

Echo Beach area properties - small boutique hotels and surf lodges cluster around Echo Beach. Rates run IDR 500,000–1,200,000/night. Less polished than Alaya Resort but better positioned for dawn surf sessions. Check for surf board storage and secure facilities if you are travelling with equipment.

Luxury Accommodation in Canggu (from USD 150/night)

Semara Luxury Villa Resort (Berawa area) - one of the most consistently rated luxury properties in the Canggu corridor. Pool villas from approximately USD 250–450/night. Large gardens, attentive villa butler service, and direct access to Berawa Beach (which has calmer conditions than Echo Beach). The property manages larger group villas in the compound for families or groups seeking a premium-serviced experience.

Katamama Bali (extended Canggu corridor, near Petitenget) - 58 suites in a building constructed using traditional Balinese craftsmanship techniques. Rates from approximately USD 300–550/night. The Mejekawi rooftop bar is one of Bali’s better sunset positions. Technically positioned on the Seminyak-Canggu border but accessed primarily from the Canggu direction. The most design-coherent luxury option in this part of Bali.

Private villa rentals in Seseh and Cemagi - whole-villa rentals through platforms such as Airbnb Luxe, Villa Finder, or direct management companies. Two-bedroom private pool villas run approximately USD 200–400/night; four-bedroom villas for groups reach USD 600–1,200/night. These villas typically include daily cleaning, pool service, and a private driver arrangement can be negotiated. The experience is genuinely secluded - this is rice field and ocean-view Bali with minimal tourism infrastructure around you.

Seasonal pricing at the luxury tier: Peak periods (July–August, Christmas–New Year fortnight) see rates rise 30–50% above the figures quoted here. The most sought-after private villas in Seseh book 2–3 months ahead for the July–August window. May–June shoulder season offers 20–30% savings against peak rates with comparable weather.

Airport Transfer from Ngurah Rai

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) sits approximately 20–25 km south of central Canggu. There is no direct public bus or shuttle to Canggu - the Damri airport bus does not service this route.

Grab or Gojek are the standard transfer method. Fares from the airport to Batu Bolong run approximately IDR 140,000–200,000 depending on precise destination and time of day. As noted above, avoid the 4–7pm weekday window when Jalan Sunset Road backs up significantly. The journey takes 35–50 minutes in normal conditions.

Metered taxi (Blue Bird or Express): Fares from the official taxi rank at arrivals run approximately IDR 150,000–220,000 to central Canggu. Blue Bird is the most trustworthy metered operator at the airport. Slightly more expensive than Grab but the booking process is simpler on arrival with heavy luggage.

Scooter rental: A number of travellers rent a scooter at or near the airport and ride directly to Canggu. This is only advisable for experienced riders familiar with Bali traffic conditions. The airport exit road and Jalan Sunset Road carry heavy traffic and require confident lane positioning.

Seasonal Pricing Summary

Low season in Canggu does not mean empty - the digital nomad base keeps cafes and co-working spaces busy year-round. What changes is availability of premium accommodation and villa rental prices, both of which drop significantly outside peak travel windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Canggu from Ngurah Rai Airport?
Canggu is approximately 20–25 km north of the airport, taking 35–50 minutes by Grab or taxi depending on traffic. There is no direct shuttle service. A Grab from the airport to central Canggu (Batu Bolong area) costs approximately IDR 140,000–200,000. Avoid travelling this route between 4–7pm on weekdays when Bypass Ngurah Rai and Jalan Sunset Road are congested.
Is Canggu good for families with young children?
Canggu suits families with older children and teenagers reasonably well, but the beach has strong rips and shore break that make it unsuitable for young swimmers. Pererenan zone offers quieter rice field surroundings. Families with young children generally find Sanur or Nusa Dua easier - calmer swimming beaches and dedicated resort infrastructure.
What is the difference between Berawa, Pererenan, and Seseh in Canggu?
Berawa and Batu Bolong are the most active zones - cafes, yoga studios, surf rental shops, and restaurants within walking distance. Pererenan sits 10–15 minutes further north, quieter with more rice field settings and villa compounds popular with families and longer-stay visitors. Seseh and Cemagi are the most secluded, mostly luxury villas with minimal street-level activity.
When is the cheapest time to book accommodation in Canggu?
April to June and September to October are the lowest-demand periods, with rates typically 30–40% below peak. July–August and December–January are peak months when popular villas and boutique properties book out weeks in advance. Shoulder months (May, June, September) offer the best combination of good weather and lower rates.
Can I find accommodation in Canggu for under IDR 300,000 per night?
Yes, but options are limited. Dojo Bali offers dorm beds from approximately IDR 180,000–280,000 and is the most reliable budget option in the area. A handful of family homestays on the back lanes of Batu Bolong run IDR 200,000–350,000 for private rooms. Rates this low require advance searching and are harder to find during July–August peak.
