Canggu is one of the most accessible surf destinations in Bali. Within a 3-kilometre stretch of coastline you have three distinct breaks suited to different skill levels, a dozen surf schools, and board hire on every corner. The quality of the waves is not Uluwatu — nothing in Canggu is — but the variety and convenience make it the practical choice for most visitors who want to learn, practise, or stay sharp between swells.

The Three Main Breaks

Batu Bolong (Beginner–Intermediate)

Named after the holey rock visible from the beach, Batu Bolong is the most beginner-friendly surf spot in Canggu. The break delivers consistent, manageable waves in the 0.5–1.5 metre range, with a sandy bottom that softens wipeouts. Rights and lefts both run.

This is where the surf schools operate, which means the water is busy with beginner students and instructors during lesson hours (typically 8–10am and 2–4pm). Outside lesson times, the lineup is more open.

Best swell direction: SW | Best time: Incoming tide | Crowd level: High

Echo Beach (Intermediate–Advanced)

The most powerful break in Canggu, sitting 2 kilometres north of Batu Bolong. Echo Beach works best on a solid SW swell when 1.5–2+ metre sets push through cleanly. Both rights and lefts are on offer; the left is generally longer and more consistent.

The crowd is more competitive here than at Batu Bolong. Surfers who haven’t established solid pop-up mechanics and wave reading skills will struggle to get many waves. But for intermediate surfers who have moved past the beginner stage, Echo Beach is where Canggu becomes genuinely exciting.

Best swell direction: SW–WSW | Best time: Mid to high tide | Crowd level: Moderate–high in peak season

Old Man’s (Beginner–Intermediate)

Between Batu Bolong and Echo Beach, Old Man’s is the mellowist option — slow, rolling waves that break in consistent smaller sets. It earns its name. Less powerful than Echo, less crowded than Batu Bolong during lesson hours.

Good for first-time surfers who have had one lesson and want to practise independently, and for longboarders. Also pleasant for experienced surfers who want an easy, low-stakes session after travelling.

Surf Season

May–October (dry season) is prime surfing season in Canggu. Consistent SW swells arrive from the Southern Ocean, offshore morning winds keep the faces clean, and the water temperature sits at approximately 26–28°C. Dawn sessions are reliable and uncrowded compared to midday.

November–April (wet season) is still surfable. Swell is less consistent, onshore winds are more common in the afternoon, and the occasional heavy tropical rain interrupts sessions. The crowd shrinks substantially, which compensates for the less predictable conditions. Board hire prices also drop in low season.

Board Hire

Hire boards are stacked along every beach access track and in front of most surf shops. Pricing is consistent across the area:

  • Per hour: Approximately IDR 50,000–80,000 as of 2026
  • Per day: Approximately IDR 150,000–200,000

Boards available: foam learner boards (7’–9’), shortboards (5’8”–6’4”), funboards (7’–8’). Wax, ankle leashes, and rash guards are usually available to hire separately or included. Check that the leash plug is intact before paddling out.

Surf Schools

Odyssey Surf School

One of the more established schools in Canggu, with multi-level instruction from beginner through to intermediate progression clinics. Group lessons are 2 hours and typically run at 8am and 2pm. From approximately IDR 250,000–350,000 per person for a group lesson.

Private lessons (1:1 instructor) are available from approximately IDR 400,000–500,000 for 90 minutes — worth it for solo first-timers or those working on specific technique.

Batubolong Surf School

Operates directly off Batu Bolong beach with a large team of local instructors. Competitive pricing and high lesson volume — this is the busiest school on the beach. Group lessons from approximately IDR 250,000–400,000 for a 2-hour session including board.

Good for: complete beginners who want an efficient first lesson and aren’t paying for a premium experience.

Independent Instructors

Numerous experienced local surfers offer ad-hoc instruction on the beach. Agree on price, duration, and what the lesson covers before entering the water. Prices from approximately IDR 200,000/hour. Quality varies; ask your accommodation to recommend someone if this route appeals.

Dealing with the Crowds

Canggu has been heavily crowded since 2018 and shows no sign of easing. A few practical strategies:

Arrive early. Before 7am, all three breaks are significantly emptier. The best sessions in Canggu happen between 6–8am. By 9am, the combination of lesson groups and independent surfers packs the lineup.

Weekdays over weekends. Bali’s domestic tourism peaks on Saturdays and Sundays; the breaks are noticeably busier. If your schedule is flexible, Monday–Thursday offer a better experience.

Surf etiquette matters more here. A crowded lineup turns hostile quickly when right-of-way isn’t respected. Wait your turn, don’t drop in on other surfers, and paddle wide to avoid swimmers and beginners close to shore.

Echo Beach for a break from beginners. The nature of Batu Bolong’s gentle waves means it attracts many inexperienced surfers and lesson groups simultaneously. Intermediate surfers who want more wave count with fewer paddle collisions should go to Echo.

Competitions to Watch

The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang (held annually at Uluwatu on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, approximately 45 minutes south of Canggu) is the island’s most prestigious surf event — watched from the clifftop when a significant southern swell arrives. Date is announced short-notice based on swell conditions; check Rip Curl’s website in May–September.

Canggu itself does not host major competitions — its waves lack the size and shape for contest-standard performance surfing — but the proximity to Uluwatu means a day trip to watch professionals surf perfect reef is straightforward.
