Where to Stay in Semarang: Best Hotels for Every Budget

· 5 min read City Guide
Large white building with blue dome, Semarang, Indonesia

Semarang’s accommodation market serves business travellers first and leisure visitors second, which means reliable mid-range and upscale options with good service but fewer heritage boutique properties than Java’s more tourist-oriented cities. The restoration of Kota Lama has added a small cluster of character properties in the old town.

Budget (Under IDR 400,000 / Night)

Losmen Jaya

A long-running budget guesthouse near the Banyumanik bus terminal popular with Indonesian domestic travellers transiting between cities. Basic rooms with fan or air conditioning. Not atmospheric, but honest and practical.

Price: Approximately IDR 120,000–220,000/night as of 2026

POP! Hotel Simpang Lima

A compact budget chain hotel within walking distance of Simpang Lima square and the city centre attractions. Clean, modern rooms, reliable AC and Wi-Fi. The best budget option in a central location.

Price: Approximately IDR 250,000–380,000/night as of 2026 | Location: Jl Ahmad Dahlan, Simpang Lima

Gumaya Tower Hotel (lower-floor rooms)

The older lower-floor rooms of this large hotel occasionally drop to near-budget rates on weekdays. The building itself is a Semarang landmark and the location (walking distance to Lawang Sewu and Kota Lama) is excellent.

Price: From IDR 320,000 on weekdays as of 2026 | Location: Jl Gajahmada, city centre

Mid-Range (IDR 400,000–1,500,000 / Night)

Whiz Prime Hotel Semarang

A reliable mid-range option on the Gajahmada corridor with a small rooftop pool, clean modern rooms, and an included breakfast. Close to Lawang Sewu, Kota Lama, and the main shopping district.

Hotel Surya Semarang

A mid-range business hotel with a pool, meeting rooms, and a central location near the Semarang Tawang train station. Well-reviewed for service consistency and a generous breakfast spread.

Aston Inn Pandanaran Semarang

A polished mid-range property in the Pandanaran area with a pool, gym, and the reliable Aston breakfast buffet. The location is convenient for Simpang Lima and a short Grab to Kota Lama.

Price: Approximately IDR 550,000–950,000/night as of 2026

Quest Hotel Semarang

A business-focused property with efficient rooms, good air-conditioning, and reliable service at the lower end of the mid-range. Strong value for transit stops or single-night stays.

Price: Approximately IDR 500,000–800,000/night as of 2026

Grand Candi Hotel Semarang

One of Semarang’s most respected mid-range-to-upscale properties — a hillside hotel on the southern edge of the city with views over the Semarang Basin. The pool area and mountain air make it the most pleasant non-luxury option for leisure travellers.

Price: Approximately IDR 800,000–1,500,000/night as of 2026 | Location: Jl Sisingamangaraja, south Semarang (15 minutes from centre)

Luxury (Above IDR 1,500,000 / Night)

Louis Kienne Hotel Simpang Lima

The best boutique property in Semarang — a restored Dutch colonial building with 77 individually styled rooms, a rooftop pool, and the Spiegel Bar & Bistro (the most atmospheric restaurant in the city). The old town location means Kota Lama is walkable.

Price: Approximately IDR 1,500,000–2,800,000/night as of 2026 | Location: Jl Simpang Lima, Kota Lama

Gumaya Tower Hotel

Semarang’s premium city tower — 220 rooms with views over the Java Sea, four restaurants, a full spa, and an outdoor pool. The Colosseum fine-dining restaurant on the top floor is the best in the city for a special occasion dinner.

Price: Approximately IDR 1,500,000–3,500,000/night as of 2026 | Location: Jl Gajahmada 59

Novotel Semarang

The most consistent international-brand hotel in Semarang — reliable 4-star standards, a large pool, and proximity to the Simpang Lima business and shopping district. Regular maintenance means rooms are newer-feeling than comparable independently run hotels.

Price: Approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000/night as of 2026 | Location: Jl Pemuda

Swiss-Belhotel Semarang

A strong alternative to the Crowne Plaza at a slightly lower price point. Rooms are well-fitted, the pool deck is spacious, and the breakfast selection is notably good. A reliable choice for corporate visitors or travellers who want the full-service hotel experience.

Price: Approximately IDR 1,000,000–1,800,000/night as of 2026

Crowne Plaza Semarang

Among the city’s top luxury options, targeting the upper business segment with consistent five-star service. Pool, spa, and multiple restaurants are all above the Semarang city average. Located near Simpang Lima.

Price: Approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,000,000/night as of 2026

Ciputra Hotel Semarang

An established heritage property in the city’s upper tier — older than the Crowne Plaza and Swiss-Belhotel but maintaining a strong reputation. The Ciputra Group has kept the property well-maintained and it continues to be popular with Indonesian business visitors.

Price: Approximately IDR 900,000–1,500,000/night as of 2026

Semarang as a Day-Trip Base

Semarang’s central Java location makes it a useful staging point for several major destinations.

Dieng Plateau is approximately 3.5 hours by car northwest via Wonosobo. The plateau sits at over 2,000 metres with Hindu temple complexes (Arjuna temples, approximately IDR 35,000–50,000 entrance as of 2026), active volcanic craters, and highland scenery. Many travellers do Dieng as a long day trip from Semarang, departing early. An overnight in Wonosobo or on the plateau is also possible for sunrise.

Borobudur is approximately 100 km west — roughly 2.5 hours by car. Achievable as a day trip, though most visitors prefer to base themselves in Yogyakarta (60 km closer) for more comfortable access.

Demak and Kudus — the old Islamic sultanate towns northeast of Semarang — are within 30–60 minutes by car and make low-effort half-day cultural excursions.

Practical Notes

Semarang has two main rail stations: Tawang (central, for trains from Jakarta’s Gambir station) and Poncol (slightly further out, for some Bandung services). For airport access, Ahmad Yani International Airport (SRG) is 9 kilometres from the city centre — approximately 30 minutes by Grab (IDR 50,000–80,000).

Semarang business hotels often drop rates significantly on weekends — the reverse of leisure destinations. If visiting as a tourist and timing is flexible, a Friday or Saturday check-in at a business hotel can yield considerable savings.

Browse tours and activities in Semarang — a local guide makes a big difference for navigating temples, wildlife sites, and the less-visited corners of the island. Travel insurance for Indonesia is strongly recommended before any trip — emergency medical cover is especially important given the distances between islands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay in Semarang as a tourist?
The Kota Lama (Old Town) area or the Simpang Lima district are the best bases. Kota Lama puts you within walking distance of the Dutch colonial architecture and the best evening dining. Simpang Lima is more commercial but better connected to transport and the main business hotels. Avoid staying too far north (the port area) or too far south (suburban residential areas) unless you have a specific reason.
Is Semarang expensive for accommodation?
Semarang is cheaper than Bali and Yogyakarta and broadly similar to Surabaya. Budget rooms start at IDR 150,000–250,000; mid-range hotels run IDR 450,000–1,000,000; luxury internationally branded hotels reach IDR 1,500,000–3,500,000. Semarang is a business destination, so weekday rates at business hotels are often higher than weekend rates — the reverse of leisure destinations.
Are there boutique hotels in Semarang's Old Town?
Yes — following the Kota Lama restoration since 2018, several boutique properties have opened in restored colonial buildings in the old town. Louis Kienne Hotel Simpang Lima is the most polished; some smaller heritage guesthouses operate in the Gang Besen area of the old port district. The boutique supply is still limited compared to Yogyakarta.
