Sorong is the largest city in West Papua and the primary transit point for Raja Ampat — one of the world’s most biodiverse marine regions. Almost every visitor to Raja Ampat passes through Sorong: arriving by air, spending one or two nights in the city, withdrawing cash, buying fast-boat tickets, and crossing to Waisai the following morning. The city has a proper hotel infrastructure developed for this transit role, ranging from budget guesthouses near the harbour to comfortable business hotels and a handful of international-brand properties. Sorong itself is not a tourism destination — it is a functional regional capital with a harbour, markets, a night food scene, and the logistical services that Raja Ampat-bound travellers need.
City Centre and Harbour Area
Most Sorong hotels are concentrated in the city centre and along the waterfront road. The harbour district (near Jalan Yos Sudarso) is closest to the fast-boat pier; the commercial centre slightly inland has a wider range of mid-range options.
Budget (IDR 200,000–500,000/night)
Hotel Harisman — one of the better-value budget options in central Sorong with clean rooms, air conditioning, hot water, and a simple breakfast. Approximately IDR 250,000–400,000/night as of 2026. Useful for cash-conscious travellers who are here purely for the Raja Ampat transit — comfortable enough for one night without over-spending.
Penginapan Mutiara Sorong — basic guesthouse near the harbour area, clean, with private bathrooms and air conditioning. From approximately IDR 200,000–300,000/night. No restaurant on-site but the night market is close. Early checkout is accommodated — essential for the 9am boat.
Hotel Wisata Sorong — budget-mid property in the city centre, a reliable clean-room option with air conditioning, wi-fi, and a simple café. From IDR 280,000–450,000/night as of 2026. Staff are familiar with Raja Ampat logistics and can advise on current boat schedules.
Mid-Range (IDR 500,000–1,200,000/night)
Swiss-Belhotel Sorong — the most established international-brand property in the city, with a pool, restaurant, reliable wi-fi, and modern rooms. Well-suited to travellers arriving from long flights who want consistent hotel standards before heading into the relative simplicity of Raja Ampat’s island accommodation. Approximately IDR 700,000–1,200,000/night as of 2026 (roughly USD 45–75).
Harper Hotel Sorong — Accor-affiliated mid-range property positioned well for the harbour area. Good breakfast buffet, fitness centre, and a front desk experienced in connecting guests with Raja Ampat liveaboard operators and day-trip agencies. Approximately IDR 600,000–1,000,000/night as of 2026. Reliable wifi important for booking confirmations before crossing.
Grand City Hotel Sorong — central business hotel with air-conditioned rooms, in-house restaurant, and a popular bar area among Sorong’s business travellers. The Raja Ampat guest flow means front desk staff handle diving and island questions daily. Approximately IDR 500,000–900,000/night.
Upper Range (IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000/night)
Aston Sorong Hotel — the most polished hotel in Sorong’s current market, with 100+ rooms, a pool, gym, multiple dining options, and business facilities. Well-suited to liveaboard operators who use Sorong as a base and need reliable meeting facilities and room blocks. Approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,000,000/night as of 2026. Arguably over-specced for a one-night Raja Ampat transit, but the most comfortable single-night option in the city.
Critical Pre-Departure Tasks in Sorong
Withdraw cash — this is the most important thing to do in Sorong. Waisai and outer Raja Ampat islands have limited or unreliable ATMs. Plan your entire Raja Ampat budget in cash and add a buffer:
- Marine Park entry fee: approximately IDR 1,000,000 per person
- Fast boat to Waisai: approximately IDR 120,000 each way
- Raja Ampat daily spend (homestay, meals, boat transport): IDR 500,000–1,500,000 per day depending on style
- ATMs in Sorong: BRI, BNI, BCA branches in the city centre accept international Visa/Mastercard; use multiple machines if one fails
Buy fast-boat tickets in advance: The public fast boat to Waisai departs at 09:00 and 14:00 from Pelabuhan Rakyat. Tickets can be bought at the pier on the day but the 9am boat sometimes sells out during peak season (July–August). Buy tickets the day before at the harbourmaster office or ask your hotel to assist.
Sim card / data: Telkomsel has the best coverage in West Papua. Buy a Telkomsel SIM in Sorong before crossing — coverage in Raja Ampat is limited to Waisai and a few larger island settlements, but having data for maps and communication in Waisai is useful.
