Raja Ampat islands from Sorong, West Papua, Indonesia

Sorong Travel Guide: The Gateway to Raja Ampat

Sorong, West Papua — the gateway to Raja Ampat. Fast boats to Waisai, practical facilities, and direct flights from Makassar and Manado.

Sorong is not a destination. Every traveller who arrives here is heading somewhere else — almost always Raja Ampat. Sorong is the transit point, the place where you buy supplies, withdraw cash, confirm your boat ticket, and spend a night before or after the islands. It is a functional West Papuan port city with a busy waterfront, adequate hotels and restaurants, and the fast boat dock that matters more than anything else in town. Understanding this clearly makes Sorong much easier to navigate: you are here to pass through it efficiently and reach one of the world’s great marine environments.

That said, a day in Sorong is not unpleasant. The waterfront is active with Papuan trading boats, the night market is good, and Doom Island — a 15-minute boat ride offshore — has a quiet beach for an afternoon.

Getting to Raja Ampat from Sorong

This is the central practical information for every visitor passing through Sorong.

Fast boat (public ferry): Departs Sorong Harbour for Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat, twice daily: 9am and 2pm. The crossing takes approximately 2 hours. Fare: approximately IDR 120,000 per person as of 2026. Purchase tickets at the harbour ferry terminal; arrive 30–40 minutes before departure. The boat is an air-conditioned high-speed catamaran holding approximately 200 passengers.

Return departures from Waisai: 8am and 1pm daily. These times are subject to weather and operational changes — confirm with your accommodation in Raja Ampat the evening before departure.

Private speedboat: Available from Sorong Harbour for approximately IDR 2,500,000–4,000,000 per charter (not per person). A speedboat takes approximately 1.5 hours and allows direct transfer to homestays or resorts beyond Waisai. This is worth considering for groups of 4 or more carrying significant dive gear, or for resorts on islands further than Waisai that would require a second boat transfer.

Important: You must pay the Raja Ampat Marine Park entry fee (approximately IDR 1,000,000 per person as of 2026) at the government office in Waisai before entering the park. Do not attempt to skip this — wardens check at dive sites and homestays, and the fee funds genuine conservation work.

What to Do in Sorong

Sorong Night Market (Pasar Malam) runs along the waterfront from approximately 5pm onwards and is the best food option in the city. Grilled fish, satay, papeda (sago porridge, a Papuan staple), and noodle soups are all available. Browse freely — most stalls are priced locally (approximately IDR 15,000–40,000 per dish).

Doom Island is a 15-minute boat ride from Sorong’s main jetty (approximately IDR 10,000–20,000 one-way). The island has a quiet beach, a small village, and a Dutch colonial ruin. It is a straightforward half-afternoon excursion if you have time to fill before a morning ferry.

Sorong waterfront around the harbour is worth a walk in the early morning, when fishing boats unload and the market stalls set up. The variety of fish, crabs, and reef creatures pulled from the Bird’s Head Seascape — the most biodiverse marine region on the planet — is extraordinary even at a harbour fish market.

Where to Stay in Sorong

Aston Sorong is the most reliable hotel in the city, positioned centrally with good rooms and a restaurant. Rates from approximately USD 55 per night as of 2026.

Swiss-Belinn Sorong offers similar standards at comparable prices. Rates from approximately USD 50 per night.

Hotel Kasmar is a mid-range local option with clean rooms and a straightforward location near the harbour. Rates from approximately USD 40 per night.

Budget guesthouses are available along the waterfront from approximately USD 15–25 per night; quality varies and the Aston or Swiss-Belinn price point is worth it for a short transit stop.

Getting to Sorong

Domineikus Dobo Airport (SOQ) is 20 kilometres from the city centre, a 30-minute drive. Taxis are available from the airport at approximately IDR 100,000–150,000 fixed fare.

From Makassar: Approximately 2 hours by direct flight. Batik Air and Wings Air serve this route; Garuda Indonesia operates less frequently. Makassar is the main hub for connections from Java and the rest of Indonesia.

From Manado: Approximately 1.5 hours direct.

From Jakarta: No direct service; connect through Makassar or Manado. Total journey time from Jakarta is typically 5–7 hours including connection.

Sorong is also a port of call for Pelni ferry services connecting Papua with Maluku, Sulawesi, and Java — a realistic option for travellers doing extended overland and sea journeys through eastern Indonesia.

Practical Notes

Cash: Withdraw sufficient cash in Sorong for your entire Raja Ampat stay. ATMs in Waisai are limited and frequently out of service, and many homestays and smaller resorts on the outer islands do not accept cards at all. Budget approximately IDR 1,500,000–2,000,000 per day for a comfortable homestay experience including marine park fee, meals, and boat transfers.

Supplies: Stock up on anything you cannot buy in Waisai — sunscreen, batteries, snorkelling gear, medications. The supermarkets along Jl Ahmad Yani in central Sorong are the last reliable supply point before the islands.

Timing: The fast boat schedule means that if you arrive in Sorong before noon, you can catch the 2pm ferry to Raja Ampat on the same day. If arriving from Jakarta or the west with a morning connection, the 9am ferry the following morning is the standard plan — one night in Sorong.
