Pangandaran is West Java’s best beach destination — a narrow peninsula jutting into the Indian Ocean with beaches on both sides, a nature reserve at the headland, and the Green Canyon river system to the east. It draws a largely domestic crowd (particularly from Bandung and Jakarta on long weekends) and offers a genuinely relaxed alternative to the commercialised south-coast Bali scene.
The town itself sits on the narrow neck of the peninsula, with hotel strips running along both the West Beach (calmer, swimming-suitable) and East Beach (open ocean, surf, dramatic). Most visitor facilities cluster on and near Jalan Bulak Laut and the Pantai Barat (West Beach) strip.
West Beach (Pantai Barat) — Main Tourist Strip
This is the primary accommodation corridor: restaurants, boat tour operators, and most of the town’s mid-range hotels face the protected West Beach side.
Budget (IDR 150,000–350,000/night)
Mini Hotel Pantai Pangandaran — basic guesthouse directly on the West Beach strip, fans only but clean rooms, shared terrace, and immediate access to the beach. Approximately IDR 170,000–280,000/night. Good for travellers prioritising location over facilities.
Sunrise Jaya Guesthouse — modest two-storey guesthouse popular with Indonesian backpackers, clean rooms with private bathrooms, basic café downstairs. Approximately IDR 200,000–320,000/night.
Mid-Range (IDR 350,000–800,000/night)
Pondok Putri — well-established family hotel on the West Beach road, pool, 30+ rooms, in-house restaurant serving Indonesian and seafood. Approximately IDR 350,000–600,000/night. Reliable and consistent.
Holiday Inn Pangandaran (locally-owned, not the international chain) — comfortable mid-range hotel with pool, rooms with balconies facing the beach, and a seafood restaurant with fresh catch from the local fishing boats. Approximately IDR 400,000–700,000/night. A popular choice for domestic tourists.
Surya Hotel Pangandaran — spacious rooms, pool, sea views from upper floors, and a large restaurant capable of handling tour groups. Approximately IDR 450,000–750,000/night. Efficient but can feel impersonal during busy weekends.
Upper Range (IDR 800,000–2,000,000/night)
Grand Pangrango Hotel — the largest hotel in Pangandaran, 100+ rooms, two pools, a rooftop restaurant with Indian Ocean views, and meeting facilities. Approximately IDR 700,000–1,200,000/night. The closest thing to a resort hotel in Pangandaran; professional service and reliable air conditioning.
East Beach (Pantai Timur) Area
The East Beach side has fewer tourist facilities but a wilder, more dramatic landscape. Suited to surfers and those who prefer fewer crowds.
Ombak Surf Camp — a small surf camp targeting experienced surfers attracted by the East Beach point break conditions. Accommodation is basic (bungalows, IDR 250,000–400,000/night) but the surf access and guide knowledge are the draw.
Near Green Canyon (Cukang Taneuh)
Green Canyon area homestays (31 km east of Pangandaran near Cijulang): Simple homestays cluster near the Green Canyon boat dock, mostly IDR 150,000–300,000/night. Staying here means you walk to the morning boats before the Pangandaran day-trippers arrive — good for serious canyon enthusiasts and better photographers.
Transport Notes
- From Bandung: Multiple bus companies (Budiman, Primajasa) run direct to Pangandaran; approximately 5–6 hours, IDR 70,000–120,000 depending on class.
- From Jakarta: Approximately 6–7 hours by car; via Cirebon then south. No direct train.
- Within Pangandaran: The peninsula is small enough to walk; motorbike rental is ideal for reaching Green Canyon and Citumang independently (IDR 60,000–90,000/day).
- Green Canyon by boat: Tours depart from Ciseureuh dock approximately 31 km east of town. Book through your accommodation; rates approximately IDR 200,000–300,000 per boat (holds 4–6 people).
Booking Tips
- Indonesian long weekends are critical: Eid, Lebaran, and national holidays bring Pangandaran to capacity. These are the only periods when booking 3–4 weeks ahead is essential. Sunday to Thursday in normal weeks sees 30–40% lower rates.
- Seafood night markets: The best meal experience in Pangandaran is the fish market at the harbour — choose your catch and have it grilled on site. Stay somewhere within walking distance of the market to do it properly.
- Rainy season: November to March brings rougher seas and some rainfall but the Green Canyon still runs and the beaches are uncrowded. Good for budget travellers willing to manage some weather.
