Mataram is the capital of West Nusa Tenggara Province, spread across a coastal plain on the northwest side of Lombok and incorporating what were once distinct towns — Ampenan, Mataram proper, Cakranegara, and Bertais. Most visitors pass through briefly: arriving by air from Bali, sorting onward logistics for the Gili Islands or Mount Rinjani, spending a half-day at Pura Meru and Mayura Water Palace, and moving on. The accommodation market reflects this transit-focused demand: a solid range of business and mid-range hotels in central Cakranegara, some atmospheric beachfront options in Ampenan, and a practical cluster of guesthouses near the Bertais bus terminal. Mataram has no genuine beach resort strip — Senggigi (25 km north on the coast) fills that role.
Cakranegara — Central Commercial District
Cakranegara is the most practical base for visitors who want to explore Mataram’s heritage sites and stay close to shopping, restaurants, and transport connections. Pura Meru and Mayura Water Palace are both within easy walking or ojek distance.
Budget (IDR 150,000–350,000/night)
Lombok Raya Hotel — a reliable mid-budget choice with a pool, garden, air-conditioned rooms, and a breakfast included. Situated near the Cakranegara temple complex and within range of the city’s better local restaurants. Approximately IDR 300,000–500,000/night as of 2026. Popular with Indonesian business travellers as well as international visitors, meaning front desk staff speak English confidently.
Hotel Kertayoga — central Cakranegara property with clean rooms, private bathrooms, air conditioning, and reliable hot water. Breakfast included. From approximately IDR 200,000–350,000/night as of 2026. Smaller and more personal than the chain-adjacent options; good for solo travellers who want a straightforward base without over-paying.
Wisma Triguna — budget guesthouse with fan-cooled and air-conditioned room options, simple furnishings, and a helpful owner who can arrange motorcycle rental and day trips. From IDR 150,000–250,000/night. Cash only at most budget guesthouses in this bracket.
Mid-Range (IDR 350,000–900,000/night)
Swiss-Belhotel Mataram — the most consistent mid-range chain hotel in the city with a pool, business centre, breakfast buffet, and well-maintained rooms. Located in central Mataram with easy access to both Cakranegara and the major roads north toward Senggigi. Approximately IDR 500,000–850,000/night as of 2026. A reliable choice for those who want predictable hotel standards rather than the variability of family-run properties.
Fave Hotel Mataram — part of the Fave/Accor family, offering compact but efficiently designed rooms with reliable wifi, air conditioning, and good-value breakfast. Located in the Cakranegara commercial zone. Approximately IDR 400,000–700,000/night as of 2026. Well-suited to short stopovers with early flight departures from LOP.
Ampenan — Coastal and Colonial Character
Ampenan, the western quarter of the Mataram conurbation, was the Dutch colonial port and retains a distinct atmosphere: older buildings, a Chinese merchant district, and a waterfront facing the Lombok Strait. The beach here is dark sand with strong currents — not for swimming — but the sunsets over Bali’s Gunung Agung are spectacular from the right vantage point.
Santika Premiere Beach Resort Mataram — the most upscale option in Ampenan and the only resort-style property in the Mataram area with genuine beach access (the Ampenan waterfront). Pool, spa, restaurant, and well-appointed rooms facing either the sea or the garden. Approximately IDR 700,000–1,400,000/night as of 2026 (roughly USD 45–90). Best suited to those who want comfortable hotel standards without Senggigi’s higher price premium.
Puri Saron Hotel Mataram — mid-range heritage property in Ampenan with traditional Lombok architectural elements, a pool, and a restaurant with good local dishes. The character of the building is more interesting than the standard business hotels of Cakranegara. Approximately IDR 450,000–800,000/night.
Bertais — Transport Hub
For very early bus departures or late-night ferry arrivals from Java, the cluster of guesthouses near the Bertais-Mandalika bus terminal in the eastern part of Mataram are purely functional:
Hotel Dewi and similar small properties near the terminal start from IDR 120,000–200,000/night with the most basic conditions. These are transit options only — one night before a 5am bus to Senggigi, Bangsal, or Lembar Ferry Port. Not recommended for anyone with more than one night in Mataram.
Key Transport Notes
- To Gili Islands: Grab or taxi to Bangsal Harbour (approximately IDR 60,000–80,000 from central Mataram, 45–60 minutes). Fast boat to Gili T/Air/Meno from Bangsal: IDR 50,000–70,000 per island as of 2026.
- To Rinjani: Shared shuttle from Mataram to Senaru (Rinjani’s main trailhead) takes approximately 2–3 hours. Most guesthouses can arrange pickup.
- Lembar Ferry: For Java via Bali ferry, Lembar Port is 22 km south; taxi approximately IDR 50,000–70,000.
