Candidasa is east Bali’s main tourist village - a quiet coastal settlement in Karangasem regency with a reputation for slower travel, temple access, and proximity to the east Bali circuit of Tirta Gangga, Amed, and Pura Besakih. It has none of the beach-resort infrastructure of south Bali and very little nightlife, which is precisely why it attracts the type of visitor it does.

Accommodation here is almost entirely small-scale - owner-operated guesthouses, boutique resorts, and hillside villas. The absence of large chain hotels keeps prices in a narrow band between budget guesthouses and comfortable mid-range stays.

Main Strip: Jalan Raya Candidasa

The main road through Candidasa is lined with guesthouses and small restaurants. This is the core of the village, closest to the lagoon swimming area and the strip of local warungs.

Budget - Main Strip (IDR 150,000–350,000/night)

Kelapa Mas Bungalows - small family guesthouse with 8 rooms and a shared terrace. Air-conditioned rooms from approximately IDR 180,000/night. Clean, reliable, and within easy walking distance of both the lagoon and the central warung cluster. A consistent budget choice for solo travellers doing the east Bali circuit.

Candi Beach Cottage - popular mid-budget option with a small pool, 15 rooms, and direct access to the lagoon beach at the eastern end of the village. Rates approximately IDR 250,000–400,000/night. The pool and beach access make this a significant step up from basic guesthouses without breaking budget.

Puri Pandan - 12-room guesthouse in a garden compound with a pool and traditional Balinese bale architecture. Rates approximately IDR 200,000–350,000/night. Breakfast usually included. Well-regarded for cleanliness and the helpfulness of the family managing it.

Mid-Range - Main Strip (IDR 400,000–1,200,000/night)

The Watergarden Hotel and Spa - one of Candidasa’s most established properties: 14 individual bungalows set around a series of lotus-filled garden pools and water features. Rates approximately IDR 600,000–1,200,000/night. The garden design is a genuine highlight - unusually atmospheric for the east Bali market. Spa and restaurant on-site. Well suited to couples.

Alila Manggis (5 km west of Candidasa, near Manggis village) - the most polished resort in the broader Candidasa area: 55 rooms and suites in a beachfront garden compound between mountain and sea. Pool, spa, cooking school, and cycling tours. Rates approximately IDR 1,800,000–4,000,000/night. Technically outside Candidasa’s main strip but often cited as the area’s best hotel. Well positioned for Tirta Gangga and Sidemen day trips.

Hillside Properties: Views Over the Bali Strait

A cluster of small villas and guesthouses sits on the hillside behind and above the main strip - offering views across the water toward the Nusa Islands and Lombok’s Mount Rinjani on clear days.

Mid-Range - Hillside (IDR 500,000–2,000,000/night)

Villa Candidasa - two-bedroom hillside villa with private pool and a terrace looking out across the strait. Rates approximately IDR 800,000–1,500,000/night for the villa (suits two couples or a family). Mountain and sea views; quiet location 5 minutes from the main strip by scooter.

Rama Candidasa Resort and Spa - on the hillside above the main village. Pool, spa, terrace restaurant with ocean views. Rates approximately IDR 500,000–1,000,000/night. A dependable mid-range option that packages views and facilities at reasonable east Bali pricing.

Padang Bai: An Alternative East Bali Base

Padang Bai, 8 km west of Candidasa, is worth mentioning as an alternative base for east Bali stays - particularly for travellers arriving by ferry from Lombok or planning the Amed diving circuit.

Budget - Padang Bai (IDR 100,000–300,000/night)

BLU-ZEA Resort - small boutique guesthouse with hillside rooms and a bay view. Rates approximately IDR 200,000–400,000/night. One of Padang Bai’s better budget options.

Zen Inn (Padang Bai) - backpacker-oriented with dorms and private rooms. Dorms from IDR 80,000/night; private rooms from IDR 150,000. Right in the harbour village with easy access to ferries.

Getting Here: Ngurah Rai Airport to Candidasa

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is approximately 70–80 km west of Candidasa - a journey of 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic.

  • Private driver - IDR 300,000–450,000 one way from the airport to Candidasa. Most guesthouses can arrange. Book in advance if arriving late.
  • Grab or Gojek - available but surge pricing can apply for this distance. Typically IDR 250,000–400,000 from the airport.
  • Via Amed or Tirta Gangga - if combining Candidasa with an Amed stop or Tirta Gangga visit, a hired driver for a day trip circuit (IDR 450,000–700,000 for a full day) can drop you at Candidasa at the end of the route.

Getting Around Candidasa and East Bali

Candidasa’s main strip is walkable - the lagoon, restaurants, and most guesthouses are within 15 minutes on foot. For day trips to Tirta Gangga, Amed, Sidemen, or Besakih:

  • Rented scooter - IDR 60,000–80,000/day. Good option for reaching the closer sites (Tirta Gangga, Tenganan traditional village).
  • Hired driver - IDR 400,000–600,000 for a full day including fuel. Most useful for the Besakih circuit (steep mountain roads where scooters are tiring).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Candidasa have a beach?
The main Candidasa beachfront has eroded significantly due to coral reef removal in past decades. The area directly in front of the main strip has a seawall rather than a beach. However, small coves north and south of the village (particularly Pantai Perasi/Virgin Beach to the east) are accessible and have good sand. The lagoon area at the eastern end of Candidasa has a swimming beach.
How far is Candidasa from Ngurah Rai Airport?
Approximately 70–80 km east of the airport, a journey of 1.5–2 hours by car. The most direct route goes via the coastal road through Padang Bai. A private driver from the airport runs approximately IDR 300,000–450,000 one way.
Is Candidasa good for day trips?
Yes - it's one of the better-placed east Bali bases for multi-site exploration. Tirta Gangga water palace is 30 minutes northeast, Pura Besakih (Bali's mother temple) is 1.5 hours north, Amed diving is 45 minutes, and the Sidemen rice terrace valley is 30 minutes west. Candidasa's relative quietness makes it a practical overnight point for east Bali circuits.
What is the difference between Candidasa and Padang Bai?
Padang Bai is 8 km west of Candidasa - a small harbour village that serves as the Bali–Lombok ferry port. It has a diving scene and a backpacker strip along the harbour. Candidasa is quieter and has more upscale guesthouses and small resorts. Travellers catching the overnight ferry to Lombok often stay in Padang Bai the night before; those doing east Bali exploration generally prefer Candidasa.
