Candidasa sits on Bali’s east coast, roughly halfway between Klungkung (Semarapura) and Amlapura - a small coastal town in a sheltered bay framed by offshore limestone outcrops. Unlike the west-coast beach resorts, Candidasa has a quieter, more lived-in character: local fishing communities, dive boats, and a strip of hotels and warungs facing the bay. The beach loss is its main drawback, but the town makes up for it as a base for east Bali’s cultural and diving highlights.

It is a natural stop between Ubud and the Amed dive coast, and many visitors spend two or three nights here without feeling they have run out of things to do.

The main waterfront

Candidasa’s accommodation runs along the coastal road (Jalan Raya Candidasa) - most hotels face the bay, and the offshore rocks are visible from most rooms.

Budget (IDR 150,000–350,000 / USD 9–22 per night)

  • Candidasa Beach Bungalows II - Simple bungalow-style accommodation directly on the waterfront. Rooms from IDR 180,000–320,000 per night. A reliable budget option with bay views from the rooms - among the best-positioned budget accommodation in Candidasa.

  • Tenganan Beach Cottages - Small family-run guesthouse near the Candidasa lagoon area. Rooms from IDR 150,000–280,000 per night. Basic rooms with friendly management - good value in a quiet part of the waterfront.

Mid-range (IDR 400,000–1,000,000 / USD 25–62 per night)

  • Lotus Bungalows Candidasa - Well-located bungalows on the Candidasa waterfront with garden rooms and a pool. Rates from IDR 400,000–700,000 per night. Consistently good ratings for the helpful management and cleanliness.

  • Dewa Bharata Bungalows - Mid-range bungalow resort with pool and waterfront position. Rates from IDR 450,000–800,000 per night. A step up from the basic budget options - good pool and a small restaurant on-site.

  • Alila Manggis - Hyatt’s boutique property set amid manggis (mangosteen) orchards 4 kilometres east of Candidasa, directly on the sea. Rooms and pool villas from IDR 1,800,000–4,000,000 per night. The Alila Manggis is the standout luxury property in east Bali - the open-sided restaurant by the sea and the orchard setting are extraordinary. Cooking classes, temple tours, and a resident marine biologist for snorkelling excursions available.

Luxury (IDR 1,500,000+ / USD 94+ per night)

  • The Watergarden Hotel and Spa - One of Candidasa’s nicest boutique properties - pond and garden villa rooms in a lush tropical garden setting. Rates from IDR 900,000–1,800,000 per night. The lily pond environment and the quality of the on-site restaurant (fresh fish, local vegetables) make this a standout mid-to-luxury option.

Practical notes

Diving: Candidasa’s main dive operators - several are clustered near the town centre - run regular trips to the offshore rocks. A two-dive day trip costs approximately IDR 500,000–700,000 including equipment rental. The mola mola season (July–October) requires advance booking as trips fill quickly.

Tenganan Pegringsingan: The Bali Aga village 8 kilometres west of Candidasa is open to visitors daily. Entry by donation (typically IDR 10,000–20,000). The village is the only remaining community producing double-ikat geringsing cloth - a highly labour-intensive weaving technique. Workshops within the village walls sell pieces directly; prices start from IDR 200,000 for small scarves.

Transport: Candidasa sits on the main east Bali highway (Jalan Raya Candidasa). Shuttle buses connect to Kuta, Ubud, Padang Bai, and Amed - book through your hotel. Private car hire to Ubud costs approximately IDR 300,000–400,000 one way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Candidasa's beach?
Candidasa once had a wide white sand beach but it was largely lost after coral mining in the lagoon in the 1970s–80s removed the natural barrier reef. Without the reef, wave action eroded the beach. Concrete breakwaters and sea walls now line much of the Candidasa waterfront - the town is still a pleasant coastal base but primarily for its calm bay views and proximity to diving sites, rather than swimming from a beach.
Is Candidasa good for diving?
Yes - Candidasa is one of Bali's main dive base towns. The offshore rocks (Gili Tepekong, Gili Mimpang, Gili Biaha) have cold upwellings that attract large pelagics including mola mola (ocean sunfish) from July to October. The diving requires some experience - currents are strong and conditions vary. Several well-established dive operators are based in Candidasa.
How much does accommodation in Candidasa cost?
Budget guesthouses in Candidasa start from IDR 150,000–300,000 per night (USD 9–19). Mid-range hotels and bungalow resorts cost IDR 400,000–1,000,000 per night (USD 25–62). Top-end boutique resorts with pool villas cost IDR 1,500,000–3,500,000 per night.
What is near Candidasa?
Candidasa is a good base for the Tenganan Pegringsingan Bali Aga village (8 kilometres west - the oldest pre-Hindu Balinese village, famous for double ikat geringsing weaving), Besakih Temple on Mount Agung's slopes (45 minutes), Padang Bai port (15 minutes west), and the Tirta Gangga royal water palace (30 minutes north).
