Ambon is the capital of Maluku province - a hilly city wrapping around a deep natural bay in eastern Indonesia. For most travellers, it’s the entry point to the Banda Sea, Banda Islands, and the scattered atolls of Maluku. The city itself has more to offer than many expect: WWII sites, a lively fresh-produce market, and some of Indonesia’s most underrated muck diving directly in Ambon Bay at Laha, where rare critters including rhinopias, wunderpus, and mimic octopus are regularly spotted.
Ambon City centre (waterfront and Karang Panjang)
The central waterfront area near Pantai Mardika is the main commercial zone. Most hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and the main port are within walking distance of each other.

Laha area (diving focus)
Laha village, on the western side of Ambon Bay opposite the city, is the centre of Ambon’s muck-diving scene. Staying here cuts boat transfers to the best dive sites to a few minutes rather than 30–40 minutes from the city.
- Maluku Resort & Dive - Small dive resort in the Laha area with dive packages including multiple dives per day, accommodation, and meals. Rates from IDR 700,000–1,500,000 per night all-in. The only practical option for serious divers who want to dive Ambon Bay without long daily transfers.

Practical notes
Getting to the islands: Speedboats to Banda Islands (6–8 hours) and Seram depart from the main port. Book passage through your hotel or through agents near the waterfront - boats run most days in dry season (April–November) but services thin considerably in wet season.
Natsepa Beach: A popular local beach 15 kilometres east of the city, accessible by angkot (local minibus) for IDR 5,000–10,000. Mainly visited by Ambonese families on weekends. Not a swimming beach by international standards but pleasant for an afternoon.
Food: Ambon’s market (Pasar Mardika) is worth visiting early morning for papeda (sago porridge), fresh tuna, and local produce. The city’s seafood restaurants on Jalan Said Perintah serve grilled fish from IDR 50,000–120,000 per plate.
Booking tips
Ambon is a regular business and domestic transit hub - Swiss-Belinn and Santika Premiere often fill mid-week on government and NGO business, particularly ahead of Maluku provincial events. For tourist visits, book Swiss-Belinn and Santika at least a week ahead; budget options usually have walk-in availability.
Divers heading for Laha muck diving should confirm Maluku Resort & Dive’s availability before booking flights. It’s a small resort with limited rooms, and arrival during peak visibility season (October–March) requires advance booking. Contact the resort directly for current package rates - third-party pricing is rarely accurate for dive resorts in eastern Indonesia.
If planning onward island-hopping to Banda, factor in the December–February monsoon when booking. Speedboats to Banda Islands are affected significantly by rough seas in these months - build flexible departure dates into your itinerary and verify sea conditions with harbour agents on arrival in Ambon.
