Sanur is Bali’s oldest established tourist area - the first beach hotels appeared here in the 1960s - and it retains a character that newer resort zones have largely lost. The beach faces east across the Lombok Strait, which produces calm water behind the reef, gentle sunrises, and a consistent morning light that the surf beaches of the west coast cannot match. The trade-off is no sunset view from the beach itself.
For families, older travellers, and those planning Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan ferry trips, Sanur is one of the most practical choices in southern Bali. It runs quieter than Seminyak or Canggu, has a strong local restaurant scene along Jalan Danau Tamblingan, and the 4-km beachfront cycle path is one of Bali’s better pieces of tourist infrastructure.
Sanur’s Main Zones
South Sanur (Jalan Segara Ayu and Jalan Hang Tuah area) is the zone closest to Sanur Harbour, where fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan depart. The beach here is slightly more local in character - fishing boats share the sand with sunbathers. Most budget guesthouses in Sanur cluster in this zone. The ferry access alone makes it worth considering for island-hopping itineraries.
Central Sanur (around Jalan Danau Tamblingan) is the main commercial and restaurant strip. Warung and mid-range restaurants line the road running parallel to the beach. The beachfront hotels with the most mature tropical gardens - properties like Segara Village and Tandjung Sari - anchor this stretch. Walking distance to both the ferry and the main restaurant scene.
North Sanur and Semawang extends northward toward Denpasar. Quieter, more residential, fewer tourists. Some of Sanur’s larger resort properties (Hyatt Regency Bali, Inna Grand Bali Beach) occupy this northern stretch, where beach frontage widens and the setting is less urban.
Budget Accommodation in Sanur (IDR 200,000–500,000/night)
Santai Beach Inn (South Sanur area) - a compact, clean guesthouse within 5–10 minutes walk of Sanur Harbour. Rooms from approximately IDR 250,000–400,000/night. Air conditioning, en suite, and basic breakfast available at extra cost. The building is straightforward rather than atmospheric, but the location for ferry access is hard to beat at this price point. Staff are helpful for arranging boat tickets and transport.
Homestays along Jalan Segara Ayu - a cluster of small family-run guesthouses run IDR 200,000–400,000/night for private air-conditioned rooms. Quality varies more than at established guesthouses - check reviews on Booking.com or Google Maps for the specific property before committing. Several of these properties do not appear on major OTAs and can only be found by walking the street or through local accommodation Facebook groups.
Segara Village budget rooms - Segara Village is primarily a mid-range to upper property, but has historically maintained a small inventory of more basic garden-view rooms at lower price points. Check current pricing on the hotel’s website directly - OTA availability for the lower room categories is not always reliable.
Seasonal note at budget tier: Even in peak season, Sanur’s budget tier does not face the same extreme scarcity as Canggu or Seminyak. The neighbourhood sees less backpacker demand, meaning rooms at IDR 200,000–400,000 remain findable in July–August with a week’s notice, though the best-located properties near the ferry fill faster.
Mid-Range Hotels and Resorts in Sanur (IDR 500,000–3,000,000/night)
Segara Village Hotel (Central Sanur beachfront) - one of Sanur’s most characterful properties. The hotel has operated since the 1960s and its mature tropical gardens - a mix of coconut palms, frangipani, and ornamental plantings - create an atmosphere that newer builds cannot replicate. Beachfront position with direct beach access. Rates run approximately IDR 800,000–1,500,000/night. The property suits couples and older travellers who value atmosphere over modern hotel standardisation. Breakfast included at most rate plans.
Griya Santrian (Central to South Sanur beachfront) - 55 rooms in a beachfront setting with a focus on Balinese-style garden layout. Rates from approximately IDR 1,000,000–2,000,000/night. The pool overlooks the beach. One of Sanur’s consistently higher-rated properties in the mid-range segment - service standards are noticeably attentive for the price point. Good for couples and families with older children.
Tandjung Sari Hotel (Central Sanur beachfront) - one of Bali’s original boutique beach hotels. 26 individual bungalows in a mature garden setting, opened in 1962 and still operated by the original family. Rates from approximately IDR 1,500,000–3,000,000/night. The Tandjung Sari is a genuine piece of Bali’s early tourism history and appeals to travellers who specifically value that heritage. The beachfront here is directly in front of the property. Room facilities are not the most modern, but the atmosphere and attention to traditional detail are unmatched in Sanur.
Inna Grand Bali Beach (North Sanur beachfront) - Indonesia’s first large-scale resort hotel, originally built in 1966. Recently renovated, the property now runs approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000/night. The beachfront position is excellent - wide beach, calm water, and good views. The scale (600+ rooms) means it is more resort-like than boutique, but the renovation has brought it back to a competitive standard. The large pool complex suits families.
Upper-Range and Luxury in Sanur (from USD 150/night)
Puri Santrian (South-Central Sanur beachfront) - the sister property to Griya Santrian, with a slightly more upscale positioning. Beachfront, 54 rooms and suites, good pool area. Rates from approximately IDR 1,500,000–3,500,000/night. The combination of beachfront access and mature garden landscaping makes this one of the better-value luxury-adjacent options in Sanur. A favourite with repeat visitors to the area.
Hyatt Regency Bali (North Sanur) - the largest luxury resort in Sanur. 363 rooms, multiple pools (including a dedicated children’s pool), private beach, and a good all-day dining restaurant. Rates from approximately USD 200–380/night. Strong for families - the water playground area and beach access with calm waves are well-suited to young children. World of Hyatt loyalty rates are worth comparing against OTA prices, particularly for stays of 3+ nights.
Seasonal pricing at the upper tier: Hyatt Regency and Puri Santrian follow standard Bali seasonal patterns. July–August and December–January peak pricing runs approximately 25–40% above shoulder rates. April–June shoulder season offers the best combination of dry weather and competitive pricing at this tier, often 20–30% below July–August rack rates.
Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan Ferry Logistics
Sanur Harbour (Pelabuhan Sanur), located at the southern end of the beachfront strip, is the main mainland departure point for fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.
To Nusa Penida: Multiple operators depart from approximately 7am to 4pm. Journey time is 45–60 minutes. Return tickets from operators at the harbour cost approximately IDR 150,000–250,000. Booking ahead (online via Klook, or through your accommodation) is advisable in July–August when boats fill. Public ferries (slower, cheaper, from Padangbai further east) are an alternative but Sanur fast boats are more convenient for Sanur-based visitors.
To Nusa Lembongan: Fast boat journey approximately 30 minutes. Operators at the same Sanur Harbour location. Tickets approximately IDR 100,000–150,000/person each way.
Most Sanur beachfront hotels are within 10–20 minutes walk of the ferry departure point. Properties in South Sanur are closest, at 5–10 minutes walk.
Airport Transfer from Ngurah Rai
Grab or Gojek are the standard option. Fares from the airport to Central Sanur run approximately IDR 80,000–120,000, taking 20–35 minutes. The route via Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai and Jalan Imam Bonjol is generally less congested than the Kuta corridor.
Blue Bird metered taxi: From the official airport taxi rank, fares to Sanur run approximately IDR 100,000–150,000. Reliable and metered.
Damri public bus: Damri does not currently operate a direct airport-Sanur service. The Damri Kuta route can get you part of the way, but completing the journey to Sanur requires a second vehicle. Not recommended for arrivals with significant luggage.
