May is the month we point first-time visitors to. The dry season is properly established, the wet season’s green has not yet faded, crowds sit well below July and August, and prices have not yet climbed. There is also no Australian school holiday in the month, which keeps Sanur and Nusa Dua calm.

Weather: Dry, But Not Parched
Southern Bali averages roughly 70-100mm of rain in May, with most days fully dry. Highs are 30-32C, humidity falls to around 75-80%, and the sea is warm at about 28C. Ubud is greener than in August, and the terraces at Tegallalang and Jatiluwih are in their last stretch of intense green before harvest and drying.
In Kintamani and Bedugul, daytime highs are 22-26C and nights drop to around 14-16C. Sunrise on Mount Batur is far more reliable than in the wet season, so this is a good month to book that trek. The lakes at Beratan and Buyan are misty at dawn and clear by mid-morning. Check BMKG forecasts a day ahead, since early-morning cloud still happens.
Crowds and Prices
May sits in the middle of the demand curve. Hotels and villas are around 10-20% below peak July levels as of 2026, and restaurants, beach clubs and attractions are comfortable. Indonesian public holidays, such as Ascension Day and Vesak, can create a busy long weekend for domestic tourists in some years, so check the national calendar. Book Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu a few weeks ahead rather than months.
Compare areas in where to stay in Ubud, where to stay in Canggu and where to stay in Uluwatu.
Surf Season Builds
May is when the Bukit Peninsula starts to deliver. Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin pick up consistent south-west swell with offshore morning wind, and lineups are not yet at July density. Beginners should stay at Kuta, Legian or Canggu’s gentler beach breaks, with a lesson booked in advance. Our surfing in Bali guide has the breakdown.
Treks, Rafting and Outdoor Days
Dry trails make May good for hiking. Besides Batur, the Mount Agung trek has a better window, and white-water rafting on the Ayung or Telaga Waja still has strong flow after the wet months. Waterfalls are still full but safer to reach than in January.
Culture and Events
Odalan temple festivals and cremation processions happen all year, and Galungan dates move with the 210-day Pawukon cycle, so check Bali festivals. No major island-wide closure falls in May.
Sea and Island Days
Nusa Penida and the Nusa Islands are calm and clear, and visibility around Manta Point and Crystal Bay is good. Book a Nusa Penida tour early for the best boat slots, or see Bali day trips for options.
Packing and Booking Tips for May
Pack light cottons, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and a fleece for dawn in the highlands. May is a good month for scooters, but traffic is still heavy, so read our Bali scooter rental page for licence and safety rules. Book surf lessons and Batur sunrise slots a few days ahead, and arrange airport pickups through the Bali airport transfer guide if you land late. Weekday visits to Tegallalang and Jatiluwih are quieter than weekends.
Verdict
If you can pick any month, May is hard to beat: dry weather, green scenery, strong surf and prices below peak.
