Bali Airport Transfer Guide: Taxis, Apps and Pre-Booked Rides

Traveller walking through a modern Indonesian airport terminal

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) sits in Tuban, about 13 km south of Seminyak and roughly 30 km from Canggu or Ubud. The options for leaving the airport range from official metered taxis at the kerbside to ride-hailing apps picked up in the car park — and the difference in price is significant. This guide covers every realistic option so you can decide before you land.

Terminal Layout

The international terminal is a single building. After clearing immigration and customs, you emerge into the arrivals hall, which has a row of money changers, SIM card kiosks, a 7-Eleven, and a coffee counter. The official taxi desk is directly ahead — you cannot miss the queue of blue Bluebird cabs outside.

The domestic terminal is a short covered walkway to the left. If you have a domestic connection, follow signs to Terminal Domestik.

SIM cards: Buy one inside the arrivals hall before you exit. Telkomsel and XL Axiata booths are both present. A tourist SIM with 30 GB of data costs approximately IDR 120,000–150,000 (around USD 7–9) as of 2026. You will need a working number to use Grab or Gojek for airport transport.

Official Taxi Counters

The easiest option for first-time visitors is the Bluebird Group taxi counter inside arrivals. You pay a fixed flat rate set at the counter before you reach the car — no negotiation needed.

Published flat rates from DPS as of 2026 (subject to change — confirm at the counter):

DestinationApproximate flat rate
Kuta / LegianIDR 100,000–120,000 (USD 6–7)
SeminyakIDR 130,000–150,000 (USD 8–9)
SanurIDR 150,000–180,000 (USD 9–11)
CangguIDR 200,000–250,000 (USD 12–15)
UbudIDR 350,000–400,000 (USD 21–24)

The journey to Seminyak takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. Ubud is typically 60–90 minutes. The south-Bali road network clogs badly from late afternoon, so a late-morning arrival is faster than an early-evening one.

Avoid drivers who approach you inside the terminal offering fixed rates — they are typically unlicensed and charge significantly more than the Bluebird counter.

Grab and Gojek

Indonesia’s two dominant ride-hailing apps both operate at the airport, but neither can pick up from the kerbside in front of arrivals. You must walk to the designated app taxi zone, which is located in the multi-storey car park adjacent to the terminal (Ground Floor, P2 zone — follow the phone icon signs).

The walk takes about 5–8 minutes with luggage. You will need a local SIM and a working app account before you arrive — setting these up in the arrivals hall is the most practical sequence.

App fares as of 2026 (estimates — surge pricing applies):

DestinationGrab / Gojek estimate
Kuta / LegianIDR 60,000–80,000
SeminyakIDR 80,000–110,000
CangguIDR 120,000–170,000
SanurIDR 90,000–130,000
UbudIDR 200,000–280,000

App rides cost roughly 40–50% less than the official taxi counter for short distances, and the gap widens on longer routes like Ubud. The trade-off is the walk to the pick-up zone.

Pre-Booked Hotel Transfers

Many hotels and guesthouses include an airport transfer or offer one at a fixed price. This is particularly useful for Ubud, where negotiating a fair taxi rate is harder and the distance warrants having a driver who knows where they are going.

Typical pre-booked transfer rates as of 2026:

  • Kuta / Seminyak / Legian: approximately IDR 150,000–200,000 (USD 9–12)
  • Canggu: approximately IDR 200,000–280,000 (USD 12–17)
  • Ubud: approximately IDR 350,000–450,000 (USD 21–27)
  • Sanur: approximately IDR 175,000–225,000 (USD 10–13)
  • Amed or Lovina: approximately IDR 500,000–700,000 (USD 30–42)

Book through your accommodation or via Viator/Klook, which also offer shared shuttle transfers for Ubud at approximately IDR 100,000–130,000 per person — cheaper than a private car if you are travelling solo or as a couple.

Night Arrivals

Several flights from Australia and Singapore arrive after midnight. The arrivals hall stays open and staffed, and Bluebird’s fixed-rate desk operates 24 hours. Grab and Gojek drivers are present but fewer in number after midnight — expect 5–15 minutes for a driver to reach the pick-up zone.

Practical tips for night arrivals:

  • Have your accommodation address saved offline (Google Maps downloaded, or a screenshot) — data connections can be slow in the car park
  • Money changers in arrivals are open late but offer slightly worse rates than Seminyak or Kuta; change enough to cover the taxi and any immediate cash needs
  • If your guesthouse is in a small alley (gang) common in Canggu or Ubud, share the Google Maps pin — not just the address — with your driver
  • The road from the airport to Kuta runs past the Beachwalk shopping centre and is well-lit; it is a safe route at any hour

Travelling to Ubud at Night

The road to Ubud runs through Batubulan and Sukawati and has limited street lighting in places. It is safe but dark. Pre-booked transfers are worth the premium here — the driver knows the route and will typically wait if your flight is delayed. Via Grab or Gojek, factor in that Ubud drivers are not always available late, and some app drivers unfamiliar with smaller Ubud lanes may need assistance navigating.

If cost is a priority, a shared shuttle to Ubud departs regularly from the airport area. Services such as Perama Tour operate to central Ubud for approximately IDR 100,000–120,000 per person, though they may wait to fill seats before departing.

Currency and Payment

Most official airport taxis accept cash (IDR) only. Grab and Gojek support GoPay, OVO, or cash on delivery depending on the service type. Pre-booked hotel transfers are usually paid in cash on arrival.

Exchange rates at airport money changers are typically 5–10% worse than in town. Change enough to cover your transfer and the first day’s expenses, then exchange the rest in Seminyak or Kuta where rates are more competitive.

Summary

For most travellers arriving in daylight with luggage, the Bluebird taxi counter is the simplest and safest choice — transparent pricing, no app required, no walk to a separate zone. If you arrive with a working SIM and app account and are travelling light, Grab or Gojek will save a meaningful amount, especially on the Canggu or Ubud run. Pre-booking through your hotel makes the most sense for remote guesthouses or late-night arrivals to Ubud.
