Staying connected in Indonesia is straightforward in major cities and tourist areas but requires some planning for remote islands and jungle areas. This guide covers the best SIM cards, data plans, eSIM options, and what to expect for internet quality across the archipelago.

Should You Buy a Local SIM?

Yes, for any visit longer than a few days. Indonesian data is inexpensive — approximately IDR 100,000–150,000 (roughly USD 7–10) buys a month of data that covers most travellers’ needs. Relying on hotel Wi-Fi alone limits your flexibility significantly, particularly for navigation, Grab/Gojek, and translation.

Best SIM Cards for Tourists

Telkomsel (Simpati / Loop)

Best overall choice. Telkomsel has the widest nationwide coverage in Indonesia — the only operator with reliable signal in rural Bali, remote Lombok beaches, and many of the smaller eastern islands. If you’re planning any time outside the main tourist circuit, Telkomsel is the safe choice.

Data plans as of 2026: Approximately IDR 100,000–150,000 for 20–50GB, depending on the package (called “paket data”). These change regularly — check at point of purchase.

XL Axiata

Strong second choice in Bali and Java. XL offers competitive pricing and good 4G coverage in Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. Data packages are similar in price to Telkomsel. Less reliable in remote areas.

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison

Budget option. Cheaper packages than Telkomsel and XL, and adequate coverage in main tourist areas. Not recommended if you’re heading to smaller islands or trekking areas.

Three (Tri)

Good for heavy data users in cities — some plans offer very generous quotas at low prices. Coverage drops off sharply outside urban Java and Bali.

Where to Buy

  • Airports: SIM cards are available at dedicated counters in the arrivals hall at Bali (Ngurah Rai), Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta), and other major airports. Airport prices are slightly higher but very convenient
  • Indomaret and Alfamart: The convenience store chains found on every main street across Indonesia — they stock starter packs and top-up credit (pulsa) for all major operators
  • Phone shops and electronics malls: Available everywhere; staff can help configure the SIM if needed

What you need: Your passport. SIM registration is required by Indonesian law — operators scan your passport details at point of sale. This takes two to three minutes and is routine.

Data Plan Costs (as of 2026)

Prices are approximate and change regularly:

OperatorDataValidityApproximate Cost
Telkomsel20GB30 daysIDR 100,000
Telkomsel50GB30 daysIDR 150,000
XL Axiata25GB30 daysIDR 90,000
Indosat30GB30 daysIDR 80,000

Top-up credit (pulsa) is available at Indomaret, Alfamart, and most warungs. You can also top up via the operator’s app or at ATMs. GoPay and other e-wallets accept data package purchases as well.

eSIM Options

eSIMs work in Indonesia and are a convenient option if your phone supports them (most flagship phones from 2020 onwards do — check your device settings).

Airalo is the most widely used eSIM marketplace and offers Indonesia-specific plans with competitive pricing:

Airalo PlanDataValidityApprox. Cost (2026)
Indonesia 1GB1GB7 daysUSD 4–5
Indonesia 3GB3GB30 daysUSD 9–10
Indonesia 10GB10GB30 daysUSD 19–22
Indonesia 20GB20GB30 daysUSD 28–32

Airalo’s Indonesia eSIMs typically run on the Telkomsel or XL network — the same carriers recommended for physical SIM purchases. The app interface is straightforward: purchase, install QR code, enable data roaming.

Buying before you fly: This is the key eSIM advantage. You can purchase and install the Airalo eSIM from home and activate it the moment you land at Ngurah Rai or Soekarno-Hatta — no airport queue, no SIM tray juggling. Useful if arriving late at night or on a tight connection.

eSIM compatibility: Requires a dual-SIM capable phone (most flagship phones from 2019 onwards). Check your device settings under Mobile Data or Cellular > Add Data Plan before purchasing. iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3a and later are all eSIM compatible. Budget Android phones often are not.

Other eSIM options include Holafly, Nomad, and Saily — compare coverage maps for your intended destinations, particularly if you plan time in remote eastern Indonesia where Telkomsel coverage has an edge.

Advantage of physical SIM: Indonesian local numbers are useful for registering apps (GoPay, Grab, Gojek all require an Indonesian number for full functionality). eSIMs typically provide data only, no local number.

Hybrid approach: Many long-stay visitors use an Airalo eSIM for data from arrival and buy a cheap local physical SIM (IDR 30,000–50,000 for the SIM itself, separate from data packages) solely to register a local number for apps. This gives you the convenience of pre-purchased eSIM data plus app functionality.

Internet Speeds

Bali (Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud): 4G LTE is widely available and fast enough for video calls and large file transfers. Coworking spaces in Canggu and Ubud offer fibre connections with speeds of 50–200 Mbps. Dojo, Outpost, and similar coworking venues are reliable options.

Jakarta: Fast 4G and available fibre in most commercial areas. Some of the fastest mobile data speeds in Southeast Asia in central Jakarta.

Lombok and Gili Islands: 4G available on Lombok main island; the Gili Islands have 4G but at slower speeds, particularly on Gili Trawangan. Expect video calls to be patchy.

Remote and eastern islands: 4G drops to 3G or 2G in many areas. Signal may be intermittent or absent in jungle and rural highland areas. Download everything you need before heading off the main route.

VPN

Some services are blocked in Indonesia, including certain social media platforms during political events (this has occurred historically during elections). A VPN is useful to have configured and working before you arrive. ProtonVPN and ExpressVPN both function reliably in Indonesia.

Using a VPN on public Wi-Fi (cafes, hotels) is good practice regardless of content access concerns.

Offline Maps

Download offline maps before heading to areas with uncertain connectivity:

  • Google Maps: download the relevant region offline (works for major cities, Bali, Lombok)
  • Maps.me: better for rural and remote areas — more detailed offline coverage for tracks and small roads not on Google Maps
  • Organic Maps: open-source alternative, useful for trekking routes

For diving and boating between smaller islands, download maps while on hotel Wi-Fi — you’ll have no connection on the water.

Wi-Fi Quality

Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, guesthouses, cafes, and restaurants across the main tourist areas. Quality varies considerably:

  • Budget guesthouses: often slow (5–20 Mbps) and shared across many devices — fine for messaging and light browsing
  • Mid-range and above hotels: usually reliable; ask for the router password rather than lobby Wi-Fi if possible
  • Cafes in Bali: generally excellent — competing for digital nomad business has driven up speeds

Always use a VPN on shared public Wi-Fi networks. Avoid accessing banking or sensitive accounts without it.

An eSIM is the easiest way to stay connected from landing — grab an Indonesia eSIM before you fly and activate on arrival without hunting for a SIM vendor. Comparing car hire rates in Indonesia is straightforward — book in advance for peak season (July–August) to secure better prices. Book guided tours in Indonesia — a half-day group tour is usually the most efficient way to see key sites without renting transport. For inter-island travel, Bookaway lets you search and book ferry, bus, and train connections across the archipelago in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which SIM card is best for Indonesia?
Telkomsel (Simpati) is the best overall choice for travellers venturing beyond the main tourist areas — it has the widest nationwide coverage, including rural Bali, remote beaches, and smaller eastern islands. XL Axiata is a strong second choice if you are staying in Bali, Jakarta, or Yogyakarta. For budget data in cities, Indosat and Three offer cheaper packages but coverage drops off quickly outside urban Java and Bali.
How much does a SIM card cost in Indonesia?
A Telkomsel Tourist SIM with 20–50GB of data for 30 days costs approximately IDR 100,000–150,000 (around USD 7–10 as of 2026). XL Axiata packages are slightly cheaper at approximately IDR 90,000 for 25GB. Top-up credit is available at Indomaret and Alfamart convenience stores found on every main street.
Can I use an eSIM in Indonesia?
Yes, eSIMs work in Indonesia and are supported by most flagship phones from 2020 onwards. Airalo offers Indonesia plans from approximately USD 4–10 for smaller packages, typically running on the Telkomsel or XL network. The main limitation is that eSIMs provide data only — no local phone number — which means apps like GoPay, Grab, and Gojek that require Indonesian number verification will have limited functionality.
What do I need to buy a SIM card in Indonesia?
Your passport. Indonesian law requires SIM registration at the point of sale — operators scan your passport details, which takes two to three minutes. SIM cards are available at airport arrival halls, Indomaret and Alfamart stores nationwide, and dedicated phone shops. Airport purchases are slightly more expensive but very convenient.
Is internet connectivity good in remote parts of Indonesia?
In Bali, Jakarta, and major cities, 4G LTE is fast and widely available. On Lombok's main island and the Gili Islands, 4G is available but at slower speeds. In remote and eastern islands, signal can drop to 3G, 2G, or nothing — Raja Ampat has very limited connectivity. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) and any content you need before leaving areas with reliable signal.
