The Bukit Peninsula is the southern headland of Bali - a limestone plateau that drops dramatically into the Indian Ocean on three sides. Uluwatu is the generic name given to the whole southwestern cliff zone, encompassing a cluster of world-class surf breaks, the famous Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple, and some of Bali’s most spectacular villa and resort properties perched directly on the cliff edge.
This is not an area for visitors who want everything close at hand. The Bukit is spread out, hilly, and requires transport. But for surfers and those wanting dramatic natural scenery far from Kuta’s crowds, it is the best stretch of coastline in Bali.

Bingin Beach: the surf community hub
Bingin is a small cove accessed by steep stone stairs cut into the cliff. The beach below is a working surf break - not a swimming beach - with a cluster of simple guesthouses and surf-facing cafés on the terraces above the water.

Staying at Bingin means being embedded in a small, international surf community. The accommodation is basic, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the morning light on the waves is extraordinary.
Budget surf stays (IDR 100,000–350,000 / USD 6–22 per night)
-
Cliffside bungalows at Bingin - Simple bungalows on the terraces directly above Bingin Beach, with ocean views from approximately IDR 200,000–400,000 per night. Wake up to the sound of the break below - among the most atmospheric budget options anywhere on Bali’s southwest coast.
-
Surf-community guesthouses at Bingin - Basic fan-cooled rooms in family-run homestays above the cliffs, from approximately IDR 120,000–200,000 per night. A straightforward and honest surf-community stay.
Padang Padang and the western breaks
Padang Padang is a more famous surf break north of Bingin - a hollow left-hander that held the WSL championship for years. The beach has become a minor tourist attraction in its own right (it appeared in the film Eat Pray Love), which means it is busier than Bingin in peak season.
Accommodation near Padang Padang includes everything from surf camp dorms to boutique villas on the clifftop above.
- Surf-focused guesthouses near Padang Padang - Small bungalow-style guesthouses near the Padang Padang and Bingin area. Rooms from approximately IDR 250,000–500,000 per night. Practical and no-frills, with good local advice on surf conditions and the surrounding breaks.
Clifftop villas: the Uluwatu luxury tier
Uluwatu’s clifftop villa belt stretches from just south of Pecatu to the Suluban Beach area. These properties offer the definitive Uluwatu experience: an infinity pool on the edge of a 70-metre limestone cliff, with the Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon below.
-
Alila Villas Uluwatu - Hyatt’s flagship cliff-edge resort, widely regarded as one of the best hotels in Bali. All-pool-villa accommodation, a rooftop restaurant, and an infinity pool that appears to float over the ocean. Rates from approximately IDR 6,000,000–12,000,000 per night. The Alila Uluwatu is a genuine contender for one of the great resort experiences in Southeast Asia.
-
The Ungasan Clifftop Resort - Private villa resort on the western cliff edge south of Ungasan village. Villas with private pools and cliff views from IDR 3,500,000–7,000,000 per night. Smaller scale than the Alila - more intimate, with slightly more accessible pricing.
-
Six Senses Uluwatu - Six Senses’ Bali outpost perched on the Uluwatu cliff, with cliff-edge pool villas with the brand’s signature wellness programming. Rates from IDR 8,000,000–16,000,000 per night. Among the newest and most design-forward properties on the Bukit.
Mid-range options (IDR 600,000–2,000,000 / USD 37–125)
- Mid-range resorts and boutique hotels in Pecatu - Established pool-and-garden properties in the Pecatu area above the Bukit cliffs, from approximately IDR 700,000–1,500,000 per night. A practical option if you want a base on the Bukit without the luxury price tag.

Practical notes
Access to the temple: Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple (entry IDR 50,000 per person, sarong required) is at the southwest tip of the Bukit, 5–10 minutes by scooter from Bingin. The sunset Kecak dance performance at the temple runs at 18:00 and lasts approximately 1 hour - book tickets on arrival. The performance cliff terrace fills early in peak season.
Beach access: Most beaches on the Bukit require a descent down steep cliffs or staircases. Uluwatu Beach (Suluban), Padang Padang, and Bingin all involve either a rope descent, carved stone stairs, or a combination. This is not a consideration for fit adults, but is worth knowing with luggage or mobility concerns.
Nightlife: Single Fin bar above Uluwatu Beach is the main sunset venue on the Bukit - it gets crowded at weekends. Beyond this, nightlife on the Bukit is scattered; most visitors take a scooter to Seminyak or Kuta for a fuller evening out.
