Visiting Indonesia in April — Weather, Events & Travel Tips

· 5 min read Practical
Clear morning sky over Borobudur temple complex in Central Java during April

April sits at the transition point between wet and dry in Bali and Java. Rainfall decreases steadily through the month, and by late April many days in Bali are genuinely sunny with only light afternoon showers. Prices remain below peak, making April one of the better-value months to visit. For Raja Ampat, this is the last reliable month before seas begin to shift — dive liveaboards should be booked well ahead.

Wet vs Dry: Regional Overview

Bali and Java: April is the transitional month. Early April can still bring heavy showers; by late April, dry season conditions are establishing themselves. Sunrise Borobudur visits are increasingly reliable — April is a good month for Central Java.

Lombok: Rinjani National Park hiking routes may begin to open toward the end of April, but confirm current status with TNGR (tngr.id) before booking. The crater lake and summit routes require permits booked in advance.

Raja Ampat: The last month of consistently calm dive conditions. From May, seas begin to build in the Cenderawasih Bay and Dampier Strait areas. If April is your window for Raja Ampat, lock in accommodation early.

Flores / Komodo: Drying out. April is actually a good time for the Flores overland route — roads are passable and the landscape is still green.

Events in April

Nyepi (some years falls in April): The Balinese Day of Silence and Ogoh-ogoh parade sometimes fall in April rather than March depending on the Saka lunar calendar. Always verify the exact date at tourism.baliprov.go.id before booking travel around this period. See the March guide for full Nyepi logistics.

Ceng Beng / Qingming Festival (early April, Chinese communities): Chinese-Indonesian communities across Java and Sumatra observe ancestral grave-cleaning ceremonies. Relatively low-key compared to Chinese New Year — interesting to observe but no major public events.

Easter (date varies): Indonesia has a large Christian community, particularly in Flores, North Sulawesi (Manado), and parts of Kalimantan. Easter processions in Larantuka on Flores are notable — traditional Catholic ceremony blended with local culture. Verify dates and access at the Flores tourism office.

School holiday awareness: Indonesian school holidays in mid-April create domestic travel peaks to Bali and Yogyakarta. Book accommodation further in advance than usual for mid-April.

April Packing List

  • Light rain jacket — still useful, especially early April
  • Sunscreen — UV is intense in Indonesia year-round
  • Swimwear — beaches are becoming usable
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Good walking shoes — Borobudur and Prambanan involve extensive walking on uneven stone
  • Camera with weather sealing still useful early in the month
  • Modest dress for temple and ceremony access
  • Insect repellent

Best For / Avoid If

Best for:

  • Transitional value travel — below-peak prices with improving weather
  • Central Java temple visits (Borobudur, Prambanan) — conditions excellent
  • Final Raja Ampat dive window before rough season
  • Lombok beach travellers — south coast calming down

Avoid if:

  • You need a guaranteed week of sunshine — early April is still unreliable
  • You want to trek Rinjani without checking trail status first
  • You’re booking Bali without accounting for possible Nyepi closures
