Lombok Travel Guide: Beaches, Rinjani Trekking & Gili Islands

Turquoise water and rocky outcrops on the Lombok coastline

Lombok sits immediately east of Bali, separated by the Lombok Strait — a deep-water channel that marks the Wallace Line, the boundary between Asian and Australian fauna. The island is roughly the same size as Bali but sees a fraction of the visitors, which is at once its primary appeal and the source of some practical limitations. Infrastructure is less developed, ATMs are sparse outside Mataram and the airport area, and the transport network requires more effort to navigate. In exchange, the beaches of the south coast are among the most beautiful in Southeast Asia, Gunung Rinjani is the most demanding and rewarding volcano trek in Indonesia outside Papua, and the Gili Islands remain the most accessible coral-reef diving destination in the eastern archipelago.

The island’s population is predominantly Sasak — the indigenous Muslim ethnic group of Lombok — with a Balinese Hindu minority concentrated in the west, around Mataram and Cakranegara. This is not a Hindu island, and the cultural atmosphere differs substantially from Bali’s even at similar latitudes.

Gunung Rinjani

Rinjani is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano at 3,726 metres, and the trekking circuit around its caldera is one of the great multi-day walks in Southeast Asia. The standard route takes 2–3 days depending on whether you summit to the true peak or circle the caldera lake (Segara Anak) at 2,000 metres. Inside the caldera, a hot spring feeds directly into the turquoise lake, and a secondary cone (Gunung Baru Jari) vents steam from the crater floor.

Licensed guides are compulsory throughout Rinjani National Park — solo trekking is not permitted. The most reputable booking channel is the Rinjani Trek Ecotourism Programme (RTEP), a community-based operator network that distributes revenue among local guides, porters, and villages. Guide fees start from approximately IDR 800,000 per day per guide as of 2026; a full 3-day package including porters, camping equipment, food, and park entry typically starts from approximately IDR 3,000,000–4,000,000 per person for group departures.

The standard route starts at Senaru (north approach) or Sembalun (east approach). The Sembalun approach is steeper and drier; the Senaru approach passes through more forest. Most operators run combination routes using both trailheads. The summit attempt (rim at 3,726 m) involves 4–5 hours of steep scree and is not suitable for people without prior altitude trekking experience. Trekking season is May–October; the crater rim is often cloud-free in May, June, and September.

Gili Islands

Three small coral-fringed islands off Lombok’s northwest coast, each with a distinct character:

Gili Trawangan (the largest and most developed) is the party island — beach bars, dive centres, and a backpacker social scene. The central street running from the boat jetty has the concentration of restaurants, bars, and accommodation. No motorised vehicles on any of the Gilis — transport is by cidomo (horse cart, from approximately IDR 50,000 for short rides) or bicycle (rental approximately IDR 30,000–50,000 per day).

Gili Meno (smallest and quietest) is marketed as the honeymoon island, with a fraction of the accommodation options and genuinely quiet evenings. The snorkelling off the east coast is the best of the three islands.

Gili Air offers the balance: more development than Meno, less noise than Trawangan, and good diving and snorkelling from the beach.

Diving across all three islands is genuinely good — coral health is reasonable, turtle sightings are frequent, and visibility is typically 15–25 metres. Dive trips from Gili operators start from approximately IDR 350,000–450,000 per dive as of 2026; a PADI Open Water course from approximately IDR 4,500,000.

Getting to the Gilis from Bali — Fast boat services from Serangan (Bali) or Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan take approximately 1.5–2 hours and cost approximately IDR 400,000–600,000 per person one way. Bluewater Express and Eka Jaya are the most established operators; book ahead for July–August. Alternatively, fly to Lombok and take a fast boat from Teluk Nare or Bangsal harbour (20–30 minutes, approximately IDR 100,000–150,000).

Getting to the Gilis from Lombok — Public boats (cidomo-style public boats) from Bangsal harbour to Gili Trawangan take approximately 30–40 minutes; tickets from approximately IDR 20,000–30,000. Fast boats from operators in Senggigi take 20–30 minutes.

South Coast and Kuta Lombok

The south coast of Lombok from Selong Belanak west to Pink Beach east is covered in detail in our Kuta Lombok city hub. Key references: Tanjung Aan Bay, Selong Belanak, Mawun Beach, Grupuk surf breaks, and the Mandalika Circuit.

Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach)

The most remote of Lombok’s headline beaches, approximately 60 km east of Kuta near the village of Sekaroh. The pale pink tint comes from red coral fragments eroded into the sand — the colour is most visible in wet sand and bright sunlight. Entry approximately IDR 15,000. The most practical access is by charter boat from Tanjung Aan or Awang (approximately IDR 800,000–1,200,000 per boat, shareable between a group of 4–6). By road, the track from Sekaroh village is rough and requires a motorbike or 4WD; allow 2 hours each way from Kuta.

Senggigi and Mataram

The western coast resort strip and the island capital are covered in detail in the Senggigi and Mataram city hubs. For practicalities — ATMs, transport connections, accommodation range — Mataram is the most functional base. Senggigi is the most established resort strip.

Getting to Lombok

Lombok International Airport (LOP) at Praya handles domestic flights from Bali (30 minutes, multiple daily), Jakarta, Surabaya, and several other cities. International connections include Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (via AirAsia and Citilink). Flying from Bali is the fastest route from the west; multiple daily flights make this practical even for short stays.

Fast boat from Bali — Padang Bai to Lembar (Lombok’s main port) by slow public ferry takes approximately 4–5 hours; fast boat services from various Bali ports to northwest Lombok take approximately 2 hours. Prices range approximately IDR 300,000–600,000 one way. Several operators bundle the Bali–Gili–Lombok route.

Inter-island ferry — The ASDP government ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar runs 24 hours and costs approximately IDR 60,000–80,000 per person (foot passenger); a vehicle costs more. Useful for travellers bringing motorbikes. The journey is slow but services are reliable.

Getting Around Lombok

Motorbike rental — The most practical option outside the Mataram urban area. Approximately IDR 70,000–80,000 per day. Roads range from good toll road (airport to Mataram) to rough unsealed track (south coast between beaches). Carry your international driving licence.

Grab and Gojek — Functional in Mataram and at the airport, but coverage drops significantly outside the urban area and the south coast tourist zone.

Hired car and driver — Approximately IDR 450,000–700,000 per day for island exploration; the most practical option for non-motorcyclists covering multiple destinations.

Public bemo (minibus) — Cheap (approximately IDR 5,000–15,000 per journey) but slow, with routes centred on the Bertais/Mandalika terminal in Mataram.

Best Time to Visit

Dry season May–October is optimal for trekking Rinjani, beach weather, and diving visibility. July–August is the busiest period internationally. April–May and September–October offer good conditions with lower hotel prices. The wet season (November–April) makes Rinjani trekking impractical and some south coast roads more difficult, but beach visits remain possible.

Practical Tips

Lombok has limited ATM coverage outside Mataram, the airport, and the main Kuta town. Withdraw cash before heading to remote areas. The island is predominantly Muslim; dress modestly away from beach areas and be aware of prayer times in smaller towns. Bring cash for south coast beach warungs, surf rentals, and public boat fares — card machines are rare outside resort hotels. Rinjani booking should be arranged at least 2–4 weeks ahead for July and August departure dates, when guide availability tightens.
