Busy Indonesian market with street food stalls and motorbikes

Indonesia is genuinely affordable by international standards, but costs vary enormously between a backpacker dorm in Yogyakarta and a cliffside villa in Uluwatu. This breakdown covers every major expense category with real figures so you can plan an accurate budget before you leave.

All prices are approximate as of 2026 and quoted in IDR or USD where most natural. Exchange rates fluctuate — use the USD figures as a benchmark.

Visas

Most nationalities entering Indonesia receive a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at Ngurah Rai (Bali), Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), and other major entry points:

  • Single-entry VoA (30 days): USD 35 as of 2026
  • Extendable once at an immigration office for an additional 30 days: USD 35

Certain nationalities receive a Visa-Free Entry for 30 days — check with the Indonesian consulate or embassy for your passport before departure, as the list changes. Australia, the UK, the US, and most EU countries qualify for VoA; some eligible for free entry.

Verify current visa requirements at imigrasi.go.id before booking — rules have changed repeatedly in recent years.

SIM Cards

Indonesia has excellent mobile coverage on the main islands through Telkomsel (best rural coverage), XL Axiata, and Indosat. All can be purchased at the airport arrivals hall, minimarkets, or dedicated phone shops:

  • Telkomsel Tourist SIM (30GB data, 30 days): approximately IDR 80,000–130,000
  • Top-up data packs: IDR 10,000–50,000 for additional data

Register with your passport — Indonesian SIM activation requires ID registration since 2018.

BackpackerUSD 25~USD 350
Mid-rangeUSD 60~USD 840
ComfortableUSD 130~USD 1,820
LuxuryUSD 300+~USD 4,200+

Where Costs Are Highest

Bali’s Seminyak, Canggu, and Ubud tourist strips are the most expensive zones in Indonesia for tourists. A beachfront dinner for two in Seminyak can cost IDR 600,000–1,200,000; the same meal in Yogyakarta costs IDR 150,000–300,000. Labuan Bajo (Flores) has become significantly more expensive since gaining international cruise traffic — expect Bali-level restaurant prices.

The cheapest regions for extended stays are: inland Java (Yogyakarta, Solo, Malang), Lombok outside the Gili Islands, Sulawesi (Makassar, Toraja), and Kalimantan.
