Best Time to Visit Lombok: Month-by-Month Guide

Lombok sits directly east of Bali and shares a similar climate pattern, but it remains far less developed and significantly quieter even at the height of peak season. The island offers two primary draws: Mount Rinjani, one of Indonesia’s highest active volcanoes and a serious multi-day trekking destination, and the beaches of the south coast and the Gili Islands. Both are best visited in the dry season, and Rinjani has an official closure period that makes the dry season even more important to plan around.

Best Months at a Glance

  • Best overall: May–October (dry season, Rinjani open, beaches excellent)
  • Peak months: July–August (Gili Islands busiest, boats most frequent)
  • Shoulder months: May–June, September–October (Rinjani open, quieter)
  • Rinjani closed: January–March (official closure, dangerous conditions)
  • Rough seas and boat risk: January–February (Gili transfers may be cancelled)

Dry Season: May to October

Lombok’s dry season is the clear window for the island’s most rewarding activities. Mount Rinjani’s official trekking season runs from approximately April through December, and the trails are at their best from May onwards when residual wet-season mud has dried. The standard two-night, three-day route to the crater rim at 3,726m offers views across to Bali and down into the vast caldera lake, Segara Anak. Longer three-night, four-day options that descend to the lake are also popular. All treks require a licensed guide and porters - independent trekking without a guide is not permitted. Book at least two weeks ahead in the dry season, and a month or more for July and August.

The south coast beaches - Kuta Lombok (distinct from Kuta Bali), Mawun, and Selong Belanak - are at their best from May to October. Flat seas, clear water, and consistent sunshine make this the optimal period for swimming and snorkelling. Unlike Bali, Lombok’s south coast remains relatively uncrowded even in the peak months; the infrastructure is less developed, which keeps visitor numbers manageable.

The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air) receive the most visitors in July and August, when fast boat services run multiple times daily from both Bali and Bangsal harbour on Lombok’s north coast. Gili Trawangan in particular becomes busy with a party atmosphere on weekends. Gili Meno is quieter year-round and suits travellers looking for snorkelling, sea turtle encounters, and a slower pace.

Snorkelling and diving in the waters around the Gilis is good throughout the dry season. Visibility is typically better from May to September.

Wet Season: November to April

The wet season on Lombok runs from November to April, with December through February bringing the heaviest rainfall. The practical implications differ by activity. Beach visits remain possible on mornings when rain holds off, and cultural visits to Sasak villages in the interior are unaffected by weather. The main constraints are Rinjani and the Gili boat crossings.

Rinjani is officially closed to trekkers from January through March. Even in November and December - technically open - conditions on the mountain deteriorate significantly, with wet trails, reduced visibility, and a higher safety risk. Trekking agencies may decline to run trips in poor conditions even within the official open season. If Rinjani is a priority, plan firmly within the May–October window.

Gili boat crossings in January and February are subject to cancellation due to rough seas. Boats do run on calm days, but schedules are less reliable and the crossing from Bali can be rough enough to cause motion sickness. Slow boat services via public ferry from Lembar harbour (the main Lombok port) are more stable in rough conditions but take significantly longer. If you’re island-hopping in January or February, build extra flexibility into your schedule.

Accommodation prices across Lombok drop in the wet season, and the island feels genuinely quiet. Travellers who can manage the weather unpredictability and don’t have Rinjani on their itinerary will find Lombok in the wet season peaceful and good value.

Getting Around Lombok

Lombok does not have the same density of taxis and ride-share coverage as Bali. Hiring a driver for the day is the most practical way to reach south coast beaches from Mataram or Senggigi, and costs approximately IDR 300,000–500,000 per day as of 2026. For Rinjani trekking, all logistics including permits, guides, porters, and camping equipment are handled through registered operators based in Senaru (the northern trailhead) or Sembalun (the eastern trailhead). A standard two-night Rinjani trek typically costs from approximately IDR 1,500,000–2,500,000 per person through a licensed operator, varying with group size and route as of 2026.

Plan Your Trip

For Rinjani, book a licensed guide and confirm trail status through the official Rinjani trekking management body at least two weeks before your planned start date. For the Gili Islands in July or August, reserve accommodation on Gili Trawangan or Gili Meno at least six weeks ahead - popular bungalows fill early. If combining Lombok with Bali, ferry or fast boat connections run year-round but check crossing conditions if travelling between December and February.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to trek Mount Rinjani?
The official trekking season for Rinjani runs from approximately April to December. The mountain is officially closed to trekkers from January through March due to dangerous conditions, heavy rain, and muddy trails. The clearest and driest conditions are from May to September. Book a licensed guide and porters in advance - this is mandatory for all Rinjani treks.
Are the Gili Islands accessible year-round?
The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Meno, and Air) are accessible year-round, but boat crossings between January and February can be cancelled or delayed due to rough seas. During the dry season from May to October, fast boat services run reliably multiple times daily. Always have a flexible schedule if visiting in the wet season.
How does Lombok compare to Bali for crowds?
Lombok is considerably quieter than Bali in every season. Even in July and August - the peak months for both islands - Lombok's beaches, particularly in the south at Kuta Lombok and Mawun, feel uncrowded compared to Bali's south coast. The Gili Islands do see significant visitor numbers in peak season, but the overall island is far less developed.
