Lombok sits directly east of Bali, separated by 35 kilometres of the Lombok Strait, and is in many ways Bali’s opposite: quieter, less developed, predominantly Muslim, and home to landscapes that are arguably even more dramatic - the active Rinjani volcano dominates the north at 3,726 metres, the south coast’s pink-tinged sand beaches and turquoise bays are among Southeast Asia’s most beautiful, and the Gili Islands just offshore are one of Indonesia’s top snorkelling and diving destinations.

The accommodation market has grown significantly since 2020, accelerated by the Mandalika MotoGP circuit development in the south and significant government investment in tourism infrastructure. Lombok now has options across every tier from IDR 100,000 guesthouses to IDR 8,000,000 Mandalika resort villas.

Kuta Lombok and the south coast

Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Kuta in Bali) is a small town at the centre of the island’s most dramatic coastal scenery. The beaches within 15 kilometres of Kuta - Tanjung Aan, Mawun, Mawi, and Selong Belanak - are white-sand and turquoise-water perfection. Surfing is strong at Mawi and several southern breaks; swimming is safe at Tanjung Aan in calm conditions.

This is the fastest-growing accommodation zone on Lombok, driven by the Mandalika integrated tourism area immediately east of Kuta, which includes the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit (the MotoGP venue).

Budget (IDR 120,000–300,000 / USD 7–19 per night)

  • Guesthouses in central Kuta Lombok - Simple, friendly guesthouses and homestays at IDR 120,000-220,000 per night, usually with breakfast included. The right choice if beach exploration on a scooter is the priority and accommodation is just a bed between days.

  • Surf-focused hostels along the Kuta beachfront strip offer dorm beds from IDR 80,000–150,000 per night. Clean and social, dominated by surfers and backpackers. Most include surf board rental deals.

Mid-range (IDR 400,000–1,500,000 / USD 25–94 per night)

  • Holiday Resort Lombok - Beachfront resort in Mangsit, just north of Senggigi (it was formerly branded Holiday Inn Resort). Garden bungalows and rooms with pool access. Check live rates, as pricing varies widely by season. A solid mid-range option on the west coast.

  • Boutique hotels in Kuta Lombok - Small boutique hotels with pools and rooms close to the beach access roads, typically IDR 550,000-1,000,000 per night. This is the most consistently good-value tier on the south coast, with good sunset views.

Luxury (IDR 2,000,000+ / USD 125+ per night)

  • Boutique beach resorts on Sire Beach (north coast) - Private-villa style resorts near the Gili Islands, at the top of the Lombok price range (roughly IDR 5,000,000-10,000,000 per night). Ideal for those who want the Gili Islands within a short speedboat ride and high-end accommodation on the mainland.

  • Novotel Lombok Resort & Villas - Large resort on the south coast near the Mandalika circuit with pools, beach access and full hotel services. Check live rates, which move sharply around MotoGP weekends. Well positioned for event attendance and south coast beach access.

Senggigi: the west coast hotel hub

Senggigi is the traditional centre of Lombok’s tourism industry - a string of hotels, restaurants, and dive shops along the west coast 12 kilometres north of Mataram (the capital). The beaches here face west, which means reasonable sunsets but less spectacular water clarity than the south coast. The primary advantage of Senggigi is the Gili Islands: fast boats from nearby Bangsal run to Gili Trawangan, Meno, and Air throughout the day.

  • Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort - The anchor luxury property in Senggigi, directly on the beach with a large pool complex and multiple restaurants. Rooms from IDR 1,800,000–4,000,000 per night. The most complete hotel infrastructure in Senggigi with reliable four-star service.

  • Beachfront resorts in Mangsit and Senggigi - Further four-star beachfront options sit just north of Senggigi, with pools and restaurants, usually IDR 1,000,000-2,500,000 per night.

Gili Islands: the offshore option

Technically part of Lombok, the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air) are the most-visited single destination in the Lombok area. There are no motorised vehicles on any of the Gilas - transport is by horse cart or bicycle, and the atmosphere is dramatically different from the mainland.

  • Gili Trawangan is the largest and most developed: good diving and snorkelling, an active beach bar scene, and a wide range of accommodation from IDR 150,000 dormitories to IDR 4,000,000+ eco-villas.
  • Gili Meno is the quietest and most romantic - fewer restaurants, fewer bars, a nesting turtle beach, and a lagoon ideal for swimming.
  • Gili Air sits between the two in character - more developed than Meno, quieter than Trawangan, and increasingly popular with longer-stay visitors.

Accommodation on the Gilas ranges from basic beach huts to boutique eco-resorts. Notable options:

  • Vila Ombak (Gili Trawangan) - One of the Gilas’ longest-running boutique resorts. Traditional bungalows and villas with pool, diving centre, and restaurant. Rates from IDR 600,000–2,500,000 per night. Well-positioned on the beach road.

  • Overwater and beachfront bungalows on Gili Meno - Higher-end bungalows with sea views, IDR 2,000,000-6,000,000 per night. A castaway-style stay without Maldives pricing.

Senaru: Rinjani trekking base

Senaru village in the north is the main starting point for Rinjani volcano treks. Accommodation here is basic - family-run guesthouses charge IDR 80,000–200,000 per night, with no luxury options. The target audience is trekkers, and the focus is on an early morning departure time (typically 06:00–07:00 for the summit attempt). Book through a trekking operator who includes accommodation in the package rate.

Practical notes for Lombok

Transport: Lombok has no public rail. Grab works in Mataram (the capital) and increasingly in Kuta Lombok. Between areas (Kuta to Senggigi, Senggigi to Bangsal) you need a private car, motor taxi, or rented scooter. Renting a scooter (IDR 50,000–80,000 per day) is the most practical way to explore the south coast’s beach circuit.

Water safety: The south coast’s most spectacular beaches (Mawi, Selong Belanak, parts of Tanjung Aan) can have strong currents and surf. Check locally before swimming; not all beaches are safe for non-swimmers. Tanjung Aan’s two bays offer generally calmer water than the open surf beaches.

Electricity: South Lombok areas can experience power outages more frequently than the north and west. Properties with generators (most mid-range and above) are preferable for longer stays.

Which Lombok area to choose

Kuta Lombok: Best for beach explorers, surfers, and those who want Lombok’s most dramatic coastal scenery as their base.

Senggigi: Best for Gili Islands access and traditional beach resort infrastructure. Better for families who want a complete hotel with poolside relaxation.

Gili Trawangan: Best for diving, snorkelling, the social scene, and the unique car-free atmosphere. Not for those who want mainland activities.

Gili Meno: Best for couples wanting total quiet and turtle encounters.

Gili Air: Best middle ground - some nightlife, genuine quiet, good diving, and a walkable circuit around the island in 2–3 hours.

Lombok’s most consistent quality-to-value ratio is in the mid-range south coast hotels - boutique operators in Kuta Lombok deliver a quality that regularly exceeds Bali equivalents at the same price point, with the bonus of emptier beaches and a more authentic Indonesian atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Lombok?
It depends on your purpose. Kuta Lombok (south coast) is best for beach hopping, surfing, and the most dramatic coastal scenery. Senggigi (west coast) is better for Gili Islands access and has more mid-range hotel infrastructure. The north (near Senaru) suits those doing the Rinjani trek. Gili Trawangan, Meno, or Air are technically separate islands but are Lombok's most-visited accommodation zone for snorkelling and diving.
How much does accommodation in Lombok cost?
Budget guesthouses in Lombok start from IDR 100,000–200,000 per night (USD 6–12). Mid-range hotels cost IDR 400,000–1,200,000 per night (USD 25–75). Luxury villas and five-star resorts in the south coast Mandalika area charge IDR 2,000,000–8,000,000+ per night (USD 125–500+).
Is Lombok more expensive or cheaper than Bali?
Lombok is generally 20–35% cheaper than equivalent accommodation in Bali at the budget and mid-range level. Luxury resorts in the Mandalika area have narrowed that gap - some five-star properties are priced similarly to Bali. Day-to-day food and activity costs are consistently lower than Bali.
How do I get to Lombok?
Lombok International Airport (LOP) is near Praya in the south-centre of the island. Flights arrive from Bali (30 minutes, multiple daily), Jakarta (1.5–2 hours), and Surabaya (1 hour). Fast boats from Bali's Padangbai run to Lombok's Bangsal port (4.5–5 hours) and Teluk Nara near Senggigi. Blue Bird taxis and Grab operate from the airport.
