Medan is North Sumatra’s capital and one of Indonesia’s largest cities — a trading hub with a diverse population of Batak, Minangkabau, Malay, Chinese, and Indian descent that makes it one of the most culinarily interesting cities in the country. It is also the standard gateway to Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world.

The hotel market has developed significantly since the early 2010s, with international chain hotels and a growing boutique sector supplementing the older budget guesthouse network. The city centre (around Jalan Imam Bonjol and the Sun Plaza area) is the most practical base; the airport corridor (Helvetia / Kualanamu road) is more convenient for early-morning connections.

Sun Plaza and Merdeka Walk Area (Central Medan)

The area around Sun Plaza mall and Merdeka Walk (an open-air dining and entertainment complex adjacent to the Hotel Dharma Deli) is where Medan’s most accessible accommodation concentrates. The Merdeka Walk area preserves several Dutch colonial buildings.

Budget — Central Medan (IDR 150,000–400,000/night)

Zest Hotel Medan — a reliable upper-budget option near the city centre with consistent standards, clean rooms, and reliable Wi-Fi. Good choice for business transit visitors. Approximately IDR 300,000–500,000/night.

Hotel Garuda and Wisma Mutiara — mid-budget guesthouses in central Medan in the IDR 150,000–280,000/night range. Basic but clean, suited to short transit stays or budget-conscious travellers.

Emerald Garden International Hotel — a comfortable mid-budget option with a pool and good central location. Approximately IDR 350,000–600,000/night. Good value for the facilities.

Hotel Sumatra (Jalan Sisingamangaraja) — veteran mid-budget hotel, large room sizes for the price, air conditioning. Approximately IDR 200,000–350,000/night. Popular with domestic business travellers and backpackers.

Ibis Budget Medan Airport (note: this is en route to the airport from the city, not at the terminal itself) — reliable, consistent, compact rooms. Approximately IDR 250,000–380,000/night. Better located for airport access than city sightseeing.

Grand Sakura Hotel (near Sun Plaza) — well-reviewed budget-to-mid property, pool, clean rooms. Approximately IDR 300,000–500,000/night. Consistently positive reviews for cleanliness.

Mid-Range — Central Medan (IDR 450,000–1,300,000/night)

Grand Aston City Hall Medan — the most recognisable mid-range hotel in central Medan: 225 rooms, pool, rooftop bar, and a prime position next to City Hall and Merdeka Square. Approximately IDR 700,000–1,300,000/night. The rooftop view over Merdeka Square and the city skyline is the hotel’s defining feature.

Aryaduta Medan (Jalan Kapten Maulana Lubis) — Hyatt-portfolio business hotel, 219 rooms, pool, meeting facilities. One of the most consistent business hotels in Medan. Approximately IDR 600,000–1,200,000/night. Strong breakfast operation.

Hotel Dharma Deli (Jalan Balai Kota, Merdeka Walk area) — historic colonial-era hotel that has been through multiple renovations. The original building dates to the 1950s and occupies a notable position opposite Merdeka Square. Approximately IDR 500,000–900,000/night. Atmospheric rather than luxurious, but well-maintained.

Polonia Area (Near the Old Airport)

The old Sultan Iskandar Muda / Polonia Airport district (now decommissioned as a civil airport) has an established hotel corridor serving business visitors who prefer easy taxi access to the outer ring roads.

Santika Premiere Dyandra Hotel & Convention — large convention hotel in the Polonia area, 335 rooms, multiple restaurants, pool, and one of the largest convention facilities in North Sumatra. Approximately IDR 700,000–1,400,000/night. Suits conference and event attendees.

JW Marriott Hotel Medan (Jalan Putri Hijau) — Medan’s clearest luxury benchmark: 287 rooms, pool, fitness centre, three restaurants, and full business facilities. Approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,800,000/night. The best service standard in the city.

Grand Mercure Medan Angkasa (Jalan Sutomo) — Accor’s four-star Medan property: 268 rooms, pool, good restaurant, easy access to the main radial roads. Approximately IDR 800,000–1,500,000/night.

Near the Airport: Kualanamu Corridor

Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) opened in 2013 and is 40 km from the city centre. For transit visitors or early-morning regional connections, staying near the airport avoids a stressful urban commute.

Aerotel Kualanamu — the airport-attached hotel, connected directly to the terminal. Basic mid-range rooms, 24-hour reception, and the obvious advantage of a 5-minute walk to departures. Approximately IDR 500,000–900,000/night.

Grand Mercure Polonia (airport road, Helvetia area) — more comfortable than Aerotel with slightly less convenience. Pool and restaurant. Approximately IDR 600,000–1,100,000/night. Good option for early flights.

Kesawan (Historic Chinatown and Colonial Core)

Jalan Kesawan preserves Medan’s best colonial streetscape — Dutch shophouses and Chinese merchant buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century. The Harrison & Crossfield building, Tip Top Restaurant (operating since 1929), and Bank Indonesia building are within walking distance.

Accommodation here is mostly in smaller guesthouses and older hotels. The most notable is:

Hotel Kesawan (if operating — confirm current status) — small boutique property in a restored colonial shophouse. When open, approximately IDR 350,000–600,000/night. The neighbourhood is more interesting to walk than the Sun Plaza corridor.

Key Day Trips from Medan

Lake Toba: The most significant day trip from Medan — or better, a 2–3 night detour. Parapat (the ferry port for Samosir Island) is 4–5 hours by road. Accommodation at Lake Toba ranges from IDR 150,000 guesthouses in Tuk Tuk village on Samosir to the Toledo Inn and Tabo Cottages at the IDR 500,000–1,500,000/night mid-range tier.

Berastagi: 1.5–2 hours south of Medan in the Karo Batak highland area. Fruit markets, crater walks around Sibayak volcano (IDR 25,000 entry as of 2025), and the Berastagi Guesthouse (approximately IDR 200,000–400,000/night). Often done as a day trip from Medan.

Bukit Lawang: Orangutan rehabilitation site and jungle trekking, 3–4 hours northwest of Medan. Guesthouses in Bukit Lawang village run IDR 100,000–300,000/night. Most visitors base in Medan and do a 2-day trek including one night in a jungle camp.

Transport Notes

Kualanamu Airport shuttle runs into the city on the Airport Express train — approximately 30 minutes to the city Railink terminal (Jalan Imam Bonjol area) for IDR 100,000 as of 2026. A very significant upgrade over the old airport taxi gauntlet.

Within Medan, Gojek and Grab are the practical transport standard — ojek motorbike taxis for short trips, GoCar or GrabCar for longer distances. Traffic in Medan is dense and slow at peak hours; factor this into check-in and checkout timing.

Booking Tips

  • Medan’s hotel market is softer than Java’s — even in peak periods, mid-range properties rarely sell out weeks ahead. Booking 1–2 weeks ahead is usually sufficient.
  • Lake Toba departures: if leaving for Toba by shared van from Amplas terminal (south Medan), the JW Marriott and Grand Aston are both poor locations — they are in the north. Consider overnighting at a Jalan Sisingamangaraja hotel (south side) to make the morning departure less stressful.
  • Direct booking discounts apply at most Medan chain hotels — call the hotel directly and mention your Booking.com rate. IDR 50,000–150,000 per night in discounts is typical.
  • Durian season (June–August) is a food highlight — Medan’s durian from Sidikalang and Berastagi is regarded by Indonesians as among the best in the country. Street stalls near the Sun Plaza area are active from around 17:00.
  • For day trips and guided tours from Medan — Berastagi volcano walks, Lake Toba shuttle packages, and Bukit Lawang orangutan treks — booking ahead helps secure guide availability, particularly for Bukit Lawang where trekking permits are limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which area of Medan is best for tourists to stay?
The area around Sun Plaza mall and Merdeka Walk (near Jalan Imam Bonjol) is the most practical for visitors — restaurants, cafes, and transport connections are concentrated here, and it is relatively walkable by Medan standards. The Helvetia area in northwest Medan suits visitors focused on the airport.
How far is Medan from Lake Toba?
Parapat (the main Lake Toba access town) is approximately 170 km south of Medan — 3.5–5 hours by road depending on traffic and road conditions. Shared minibuses (Damri or similar) run from Amplas bus terminal for approximately IDR 50,000–80,000. Private car costs approximately IDR 400,000–700,000 one way. There is no direct train.
Is Medan worth more than one night?
Medan has more than most visitors expect: the Great Mosque (Masjid Raya), Maimoon Palace, the Chinatown along Jalan Kesawan, and a strong Acehnese and Batak food culture. Two nights allows a comfortable city exploration. Add a third night if arriving late from the airport or departing early for Lake Toba.
What are the best hotels near Kualanamu Airport?
Kualanamu International Airport is approximately 40 km southeast of the city centre. The airport has an attached hotel (Aerotel Kualanamu) for transit stays. Nearer the city, Swiss-Belhotel Harbour Bay on the airport road offers comfortable mid-range rates. Most city-centre hotels are a 45–75 minute drive from the airport depending on traffic.
