Where to Stay in Ambon: Hotels and Guesthouses in Maluku
Ambon is the capital of Maluku province — the original Spice Islands — a city of approximately 350,000 people built around a deep natural harbour at the head of Ambon Bay. For international travellers, it’s primarily known as one of the world’s top muck diving destinations, a reputation that has grown substantially since the Ambon Underwater Photo Festival was established. Beyond diving, it’s also a historically significant city (Portuguese, Dutch, and Japanese colonial history are all physically present) and the cultural heart of the Maluku archipelago.
The accommodation market is smaller than Java or Bali but functional. Most options are city-based; beach resort accommodation is concentrated at Natsepa, approximately 20 km from the centre.
Ambon City Centre: The Main Hotel Cluster
Most of Ambon’s hotels are concentrated in the city proper, around Jalan A.Y. Patti, Jalan Dr. Kayadoe, and the harbour-adjacent streets.
Budget — City Centre (IDR 150,000–350,000/night)
Hotel Mutiara Ambon — clean, practical city hotel with 30 rooms. Air conditioning, reliable Wi-Fi. Rates approximately IDR 180,000–280,000/night. Central location makes it convenient for exploring the old city, the waterfront market, and the Siwalima Museum. No pool; primarily a functional transit hotel.
Penginapan Bayview — small guesthouse with harbour views. Rates approximately IDR 150,000–250,000/night. Basic but clean; popular with Indonesian domestic travellers and budget-oriented divers who prioritise cost over facilities.
Hotel Helen (city centre) — reliable mid-budget with 25 rooms, breakfast included. Rates approximately IDR 200,000–350,000/night. Consistently reviewed for cleanliness and helpful staff. Good option for a first night before heading to dive sites.
Mid-Range — City Centre (IDR 400,000–1,000,000/night)
Aston Natsepa Resort and Conference Centre (technically at Natsepa, see below) — most cited upper-mid option in the broader Ambon area.
Swiss-Belhotel Ambon — the most complete business hotel in the city centre: 130 rooms, pool, gym, and meeting facilities. Rates approximately IDR 500,000–900,000/night. Consistent international-chain service standard. The pool is one of the few in the city proper. Well suited to business travellers and as a base for the Ambon diving circuit.
Santika Premiere Ambon — 88 rooms, pool, restaurant, and city centre location. Rates approximately IDR 600,000–1,000,000/night. Part of the Indonesian Santika chain, reliably maintained, and the Santika Premiere tier offers the best facilities within this group’s Ambon property.
Luxury — Ambon (from USD 80/night)
Marbella Hotel Ambon — upper-tier property with 120 rooms. Rates approximately USD 80–120/night (IDR 1,300,000–1,950,000). One of the best facilities in Ambon including a pool and good in-house dining. Popular with government delegations and visiting corporate groups. Advance booking recommended during October (Photo Festival period).
Natsepa Beach: Resort Option East of the City
Natsepa is Ambon’s main beach resort area, approximately 20 km east of the city centre. The white sand beach is the best in the immediate Ambon area and the location is calmer and less urban than city-centre hotels.
Mid-Range — Natsepa (IDR 400,000–1,200,000/night)
Aston Natsepa Resort and Conference Centre — the standout property in this zone. 98 rooms and suites on the beach, a large pool, PADI-certified dive centre, and water sports. Rates approximately IDR 700,000–1,500,000/night. The dive centre here offers guided trips to the best Ambon Bay and Pombo Island sites. For diving-focused visitors who want a resort atmosphere over a city hotel, this is the Ambon area’s clear choice.
Natsepa Beach Cottages — smaller self-catering bungalows at the beach. Rates approximately IDR 300,000–600,000/night. A budget alternative to the Aston at the same beach; primarily suited to extended stay visitors who want to self-cater.
Poka Marina: Dive-Base Option
The Poka area on the northern side of Ambon Bay — across the bay from the city centre — is where several dive operators have their bases and some smaller dive-specific guesthouses operate.
Lemon Garden Restaurant and Guesthouse (Poka area) — small dive-oriented guesthouse with basic rooms and direct water access. Rates approximately IDR 250,000–450,000/night. Suited specifically to divers who want minimal logistics between their bed and the water.
Getting Here: Pattimura Airport to Ambon
Pattimura International Airport (AMQ) is on Seram Island, connected to Ambon by the Merah Putih Bridge and road — approximately 20 km from the city centre.
- Grab or Gojek — approximately IDR 60,000–90,000 for the 30–40 minute journey to the city or Natsepa. Most practical option.
- Metered taxi — available from the official rank at arrivals. Fare to central Ambon approximately IDR 100,000–150,000.
- Hotel transfer — upper-tier properties (Marbella, Santika) offer airport pickup. Typically IDR 150,000–200,000.
Ambon Airport has direct flights to Jakarta (multiple daily), Makassar, Manado, Ternate, and several smaller Maluku destinations. Jakarta flights are primarily on Garuda, Lion Air, and Citilink.
Getting Around Ambon
The city centre is compact and partly walkable during the day. Grab and Gojek are the practical choice for inter-district movement. Traffic in the city can be heavy during school pickup and evening hours; allow extra time for rush-hour journeys.
For diving trips, most operators provide speedboat pickup from the city-side jetty or from Natsepa beach. Confirm pickup logistics when booking.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Ambon a good diving destination?
- Yes — widely considered one of the world's best. Ambon Bay is a muck diving site of significant repute (frogfish, mimic octopus, and Ambon scorpionfish are common), and the sites around Lease Island and Pombo Island offer coral gardens and wall dives. The Ambon Underwater Photo Festival held each October has made the city internationally known in the diving community.
- How far is Pattimura Airport from the city?
- Pattimura International Airport (AMQ) is on Seram Island, approximately 20 km from Ambon city centre by bridge and road. The journey typically takes 30–40 minutes by taxi or Grab depending on traffic. The airport has direct connections to Jakarta, Makassar, Ternate, Manado, and selected smaller Maluku destinations.
- What else is there to do in Ambon besides diving?
- The Siwalima Museum has one of Indonesia's better collections of Maluku cultural history and maritime artefacts. The Christian churches and mosques of the city reflect Ambon's historically mixed religious character — the city has maintained one of Indonesia's most successful post-conflict coexistence stories after the 1999–2002 religious violence. Natsepa beach is a popular domestic tourism spot and the Huamual Peninsula offers mangrove and snorkelling day trips.
- When is the best time to dive in Ambon?
- October–April offers the clearest visibility in Ambon Bay — the southeast monsoon (May–September) can reduce visibility to under 10 metres in some sites. October coincides with the Ambon Underwater Photo Festival, which makes accommodation in the city harder to find without advance booking. December–March is generally considered the peak diving season.
