Where to Stay in the Gili Islands: Gili T, Meno & Air Hotels
The three Gili Islands — Trawangan, Meno, and Air — sit in a row off the northwest coast of Lombok, each reachable by fast boat from Bali (approximately 1.5–2 hours) or Lombok (15–45 minutes). Despite their proximity, they function as genuinely distinct destinations with different guest profiles, atmospheres, and accommodation markets. The choice between them matters more than most island decisions.
No motorised vehicles are permitted on any of the Gilis — transport is by bicycle, horse cart (cidomo), or on foot.
Gili Trawangan
Gili Trawangan (universally called “Gili T”) is the largest, busiest, and most developed of the three. The east coast strip running south from the main harbour is lined with dive schools, surf equipment shops, restaurants, and beach bars. The night market on the main drag runs every evening. Sunset at the west coast hammock beach is a nightly ritual with accumulated crowds. This is where the party is — and also where the most accommodation choice is.
Budget options:
Basic bungalows behind the beach cost approximately IDR 150,000–300,000 per night for a room with fan, shared facilities, and access to the garden or pool (if any). Quality at this end is variable — read recent reviews carefully. Budget hostels with dorm beds start from approximately IDR 80,000–150,000 per bed.
Mid-range:
Scallywags Resort is a reliable mid-range property on the east coast, with bungalows and a beach club setting, from approximately USD 80/night. Pearl of Trawangan offers a cleaner, more boutique experience from approximately USD 60/night. Both are close to the dive schools and beach action.
Luxury:
The high end on Gili T includes overwater bungalows and stylised treehouses. Ombak Sunset, on the quieter west coast, offers thatched roof accommodation with sunset ocean views from approximately USD 150/night. Villa-style accommodation with private pools on Gili T starts from approximately USD 200–400/night for quality properties.
Book early for July–August: Gili T is one of the most reliably booked-out island destinations in Indonesia during peak season, with good properties selling out months in advance.
Gili Meno
Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest of the three. There are no bars to speak of, almost no nightlife, and the guest profile skews heavily toward honeymoon couples, families, and travellers specifically seeking silence. The island takes approximately 45 minutes to walk around entirely.
The accommodation options here are fewer but cover the range:
Budget:
Biru Meno is a small guesthouse on the east coast with basic bungalows from approximately USD 20–30/night — clean, honest, and right on the beach. A handful of similar small family-run properties offer fan rooms in the IDR 200,000–400,000/night range.
Mid-range:
Casablanca bungalows offer a step up in quality with air-conditioned rooms and a small pool, from approximately USD 55–70/night. The setting is comfortable without pretension.
Boutique:
Mahamaya is Meno’s well-regarded boutique option — white walls, tiled floors, a pool set in a garden, and attentive service, from approximately USD 120–180/night. It books well in advance for peak periods.
What to know before booking Meno: There are no ATMs on Gili Meno. Bring all the cash you need from Mataram or Lombok international airport before crossing. Card readers exist at some restaurants but connectivity is unreliable. Rates at most small properties are negotiable for stays of a week or more.
Gili Air
Gili Air sits between Gili T and Gili Meno in both geography and character. There is enough social life — several good restaurants, beach bars that close at a reasonable hour, a handful of dive schools — to avoid the total silence of Meno, but none of the club-level noise that runs late on Gili T. It is a good choice for couples or solo travellers who want a sociable but relaxed base.
Budget:
Homestays with basic rooms and shared facilities start from approximately USD 15–25/night. Some family-run compounds rent out simple bungalows in the IDR 150,000–300,000/night range with access to a shared garden.
Mid-range:
Gili Air Hotel is a reliable, centrally located property from approximately USD 50–70/night, with air conditioning, a pool, and sea-facing rooms. Villa Karang is a step up in design and privacy from approximately USD 80–110/night.
Boutique/luxury:
A small number of boutique properties on the north and east coasts offer private-pool bungalows from approximately USD 120–220/night. The island is small enough that most properties are within 10 minutes’ walk of the beach regardless of location.
Practical note: Like Meno, Gili Air has limited ATM coverage. Confirm cash availability before travel and carry enough IDR for your full stay.
Fast Boat Access
Fast boats to the Gilis depart from Padang Bai and Amed (east Bali) and from Senggigi and Bangsal (northwest Lombok). Journey times and prices as of 2026:
| Route | Time | Approximate cost |
|---|---|---|
| Padang Bai → Gili T | 1.5–2 hours | IDR 350,000–500,000 |
| Bangsal (Lombok) → Gili T | 15–20 minutes | IDR 15,000–20,000 (public) |
| Senggigi → Gili T | 30–45 minutes | IDR 150,000–250,000 |
Public local boats from Bangsal Harbour are significantly cheaper but run on a shared-departure basis only (leave when full). Most travellers use the faster private fast boats for the initial crossing.
Inter-island shuttles between Gili T, Meno, and Air run throughout the day and cost approximately IDR 20,000–35,000 per crossing, making it easy to visit multiple islands without retracing to Lombok.
