Semarang is Central Java’s provincial capital - a port city of 1.7 million people on the north coast, sitting between the sea and a ridge of hills. It’s an undervisited city with a genuine colonial quarter (Kota Lama) comparable in character to Batavia (Old Jakarta) but smaller and more intimate. Sam Poo Kong temple - a Chinese Muslim-Buddhist hybrid shrine built around the supposed landing site of Admiral Zheng He - is one of Java’s most unusual religious sites. Semarang is also a regional hub for business and government, which explains the proliferation of mid-range and business hotels across the city.

Practical notes
Sam Poo Kong temple: The complex (30 minutes southwest of central Semarang, accessible by Grab) honours Zheng He’s 1406 landing. Entry IDR 30,000 weekdays, IDR 60,000 weekends. The main altar hall and the surrounding Chinese pavilions are atmospheric, particularly in early morning before tour groups arrive.
Kota Lama: The Dutch quarter centred on Gereja Blenduk (a domed Protestant church built 1753) and the surrounding warehouses and trading houses - now cafes, galleries, and event spaces. Best explored on foot in the early morning.
Bandeng food: Semarang is famous for bandeng (milkfish) - particularly presto bandeng (pressure-cooked to soften the bones) sold vacuum-packed as a souvenir. Best bought at Toko Jamu Nyonya Meneer or the Semarang airport departure hall.
Getting around: Grab and Bluebird taxis are widely available. BRT Trans Semarang buses connect key points including the airport (Ahmad Yani) to the city for IDR 4,500 - cheap but slow in traffic.
