Maumere is a port city on Flores’s north coast, overlooking the calm waters of Maumere Bay. It’s less visited than Labuan Bajo to the west but serves as the main commercial and transport hub for east Flores. The town is the gateway to Larantuka (2.5 hours east) - famous for its Portuguese-era Easter processions - and a logical stopover on overland routes across Flores. The diving on Babi Island and along the bay’s reef systems draws dedicated divers, though the bay’s historical fame has been modified by storm damage.
Maumere town
Most of Maumere’s accommodation is clustered in the town itself - near the market, airport, and the main commercial street of Jalan Ahmad Yani.

Ankermi Diving Resort - Small dive resort on the bay coast with basic bungalows and a professional dive operation. Rates from IDR 400,000–800,000 per night. Better suited to experienced divers than resort-style travellers.
Liveaboards passing through Maumere
Maumere Bay appears on some broader eastern Indonesia liveaboard itineraries, particularly routes covering Flores, Alor, and the Banda Sea. Operators such as Coralia Liveaboard and the vintage Dutch schooner Adelaar occasionally include Maumere Bay as a dive and resupply stop on 7–14 day itineraries. For most divers, Maumere is one stop in a multi-destination circuit rather than a dedicated liveaboard base - Labuan Bajo and Raja Ampat draw far greater liveaboard traffic. Those specifically interested in Maumere Bay diving are better served by staying at one of the bay-side dive resorts (above) and arranging day charters rather than waiting for a liveaboard itinerary that includes it.

Practical notes
Babi Island dive sites: Babi Island (Pulau Babi), approximately 7 km north of Maumere, is the best dive site accessible from the bay. Boat transfers from dive resorts take 20–30 minutes. Best sites: north slope schooling fish and west reef coral gardens. Entry fee for national park waters applies - ask your resort to confirm current fee.
Larantuka connection: Maumere to Larantuka by bus takes about 2.5 hours along the coast road. Larantuka is famous for its Portuguese-influenced Catholic Easter processions (Semana Santa) - one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary religious events, drawing thousands of pilgrims annually.
Ikat weaving: The villages around Maumere - particularly Sikka village (30 km south) - produce Sikka-style ikat cloth, among the most intricately patterned in Flores. The Sikka village market runs most mornings; prices start from IDR 200,000 for small pieces.
