Ende is the largest town on the Flores coast - a port city on the southern coast of the island, built on a narrow peninsula between Flores Sea and Ende Bay. It’s the administrative centre of Ende regency, home to a functioning regional airport, and historically significant as the place where Sukarno (Indonesia’s founding president) was exiled by the Dutch in the 1930s. The Sukarno exile house is a modest museum in town. For most travellers, Ende is a transit point - the airport brings connections from Bali and Labuan Bajo, and from here the road east leads toward Kelimutu’s coloured crater lakes and the surfing beaches of Maumere.
Ende town
Accommodation is spread along Jalan Ahmad Yani and the streets near the port and market area. The town is small and walkable.

Practical notes
Airport connections: Ende’s H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport has direct flights from Bali (Ngurah Rai), Labuan Bajo, and Kupang. Flight times from Bali: approximately 1.5 hours. Check Wings Air and TransNusa for current schedules.
Ikat weaving: Ende is a centre for traditional ikat weaving. The best selection of handmade Ende-style ikat cloth is at Pasar Ende market - prices from IDR 150,000 for simple pieces to IDR 500,000–2,000,000 for complex ceremonial textiles.

Booking tips
Ende is a low-traffic destination - walk-in accommodation works for most of the year. The exception is August, when Flores sees its peak international visitor season and the few mid-range hotels fill faster than their limited inventory suggests. Book Hotel Flores Ende and Dwi Putra at least a few days ahead in July–August.
Moni village guesthouses are best booked on arrival. Most are small family operations without reliable online listings - show up in the afternoon and choose based on condition. The exception is Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge, which is bookable on Booking.com and worth confirming ahead in August peak.
If combining Ende with an early flight out, arrange your airport transfer the night before. Airport taxis are not always waiting outside the terminal at unusual hours, and the guesthouses can reliably pre-book a car for early morning departures.
