Staying in Cemoro Lawang is by far the most practical option. The jeep departure point for dawn tours is 10 minutes’ walk from most guesthouses. You get to sleep until 02:30 instead of joining a transfer from the coast that departs at midnight.
Accommodation range: Cemoro Lawang has plenty of guesthouses and small hotels at IDR 150,000–500,000 per night. Cafe Lava Hostel and Lava View Lodge are long-established options on the caldera rim.
Probolinggo
The larger town 45 km below the mountain. Most long-distance buses from Surabaya or Malang stop here. From Probolinggo, shared minibuses (IDR 30,000–40,000 per person) and private taxis run up to Cemoro Lawang. Staying in Probolinggo is only worthwhile if you cannot get accommodation in Cemoro Lawang on busy weekends.
Malang (3-hour approach)
Malang, 60 km west, offers better accommodation options and a pleasant town to explore the day before. Several tour operators in Malang run overnight Bromo tours that depart around 22:00–23:00 from the city, sleep in Cemoro Lawang or a transit hotel, then do the dawn circuit. Surabaya (3.5-hour approach)
Surabaya is 110 km north of the Bromo area. Day tours from Surabaya are impractical — the drive time eats the night. What to Expect
Penanjakan (Bukit Penanjakan, 2,770 m) is the primary sunrise viewpoint over the Tengger Caldera. The view from the concrete viewing platform shows:

Crossing the Caldera
After Penanjakan, the jeep descends from the rim and drives across the sand sea (technically volcanic ash, not sand) to the base of Mount Bromo. The crossing takes approximately 15 minutes by jeep. It is also possible to walk from the car park on the caldera rim (about 3 km to the crater base, 45 minutes).
Horse Hire
At the sand sea car park, horse handlers offer rides from the jeep drop-off point to the base of the crater steps. This is entirely optional — the walk is easy and flat (1.5 km across ash, 15–20 minutes). If you are less mobile or simply want the experience, horse hire costs approximately IDR 150,000–200,000 one-way. Decline politely if you want to walk.
The Crater Steps and Rim
From the sand sea base, a concrete staircase of approximately 250 steps climbs to the crater rim. The climb takes 15–20 minutes. The crater itself is approximately 800 metres wide and 200 metres deep, actively venting white sulphurous smoke. The rim path is unfenced in places — do not approach the edge in poor visibility.
Entry fee for the national park: IDR 320,000 per foreigner, per day (as of 2026). This is collected at a checkpoint either on the caldera rim or at the park gate depending on your entry point. Your jeep driver will know the checkpoint locations.
Time on the Crater Rim
Allow 45–60 minutes at the crater rim to walk the accessible portion of the rim, look into the crater, and take in the views across the caldera to the surrounding peaks. The walk is popular and well-marked. The smoke from the crater can be intense on windless mornings — breathe through a cloth if it becomes uncomfortable.

Practical Notes
Volcanic activity: Mount Bromo is an active stratovolcano in an active caldera. Check current alert status at PVMBG.go.id before travelling. At alert level 2 (Waspada), access within 1 km of the crater is restricted. Level 3 restricts further. Eruptions have been moderate and access is typically reopened within weeks, but never assume the crater will be accessible — confirm 48 hours before your planned date.
Crowds: June–August is peak season and the busiest weekends can see hundreds of jeeps crossing the sand sea. For a quieter experience, consider visiting mid-week or shoulder season (April–May, September–October).
Mobile data: Telkomsel and XL have coverage in Cemoro Lawang. Coverage inside the caldera is patchy. Download offline maps before the trip.
