Surabaya city hotel with pool view at evening, East Java Indonesia

Surabaya is Indonesia’s second-largest city by population and the commercial capital of East Java. It is predominantly a business and trade city — less visited by international tourists than Yogyakarta or Bali — but serves as the natural gateway to East Java’s volcanic highlands, including Mount Bromo and the Ijen crater.

The hotel market is well-developed at the mid-range and business-class tiers and lightly served at the genuine budget level. Prices are lower than Jakarta for equivalent quality, and the city is easy to navigate by rideshare.

Gubeng and the Train Station Area

Gubeng is the neighbourhood around Surabaya Gubeng Station — the main intercity rail hub for trains arriving from Yogyakarta, Jakarta, and Malang. Staying here minimises travel time when arriving late at night or departing early for Bromo tours.

Budget — Gubeng (IDR 180,000–450,000/night)

Luminor Hotel Surabaya Gubernur — reliable budget-to-mid property, clean rooms with air conditioning, 5 minutes walk from Gubeng Station. Approximately IDR 250,000–400,000/night. Good value for transit-focused stays.

RedDoorz @ Jalan Kusuma Bangsa (near Gubeng) — consistent RedDoorz mid-budget property. Approximately IDR 180,000–280,000/night. No pool, functional rooms, convenient for the train station.

Mid-Range — Gubeng (IDR 500,000–1,200,000/night)

Bumi Surabaya City Resort — the most characterful mid-range option in Surabaya: a resort-style property with gardens and a large pool in the middle of the city, near the main government district. 171 rooms from approximately IDR 600,000–1,100,000/night. Service quality is above the city average.

Swiss-Belhotel Surabaya — well-priced four-star property with pool and straightforward business hotel comfort. Popular with domestic business travellers for reliable service. Approximately IDR 550,000–900,000/night.

Tunjungan Plaza Corridor (Central Business District)

The Tunjungan Plaza mall complex is the retail and dining centre of Surabaya — a cluster of five connected malls with department stores, cinemas, and chain restaurants. Hotels in this corridor are the most convenient for shopping and for the main restaurants along Jalan Embong Malang.

Mid-Range (IDR 500,000–1,500,000/night)

Ibis Surabaya City Center — directly adjacent to Tunjungan Plaza: modern, consistent, part of the Accor mid-range portfolio. Approximately IDR 500,000–800,000/night. No pool, but the mall food court and restaurant floors are steps away.

Amaris Hotel Tunjungan — sister brand to SwissôtelLes Hôtels, similar to Ibis in pricing and philosophy. Approximately IDR 400,000–700,000/night. Compact rooms, reliable Wi-Fi.

JW Marriott Surabaya — the upscale anchor of the Tunjungan corridor. 337 rooms, multiple restaurants, fitness centre, pool, and convention facilities. Approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000/night. The Sunday brunch at MISAKI Japanese Restaurant has a local following.

Darmo and Ciputra World

Darmo is a quieter residential neighbourhood southwest of the centre, preferred by long-term business visitors and expats. It has independent restaurants, less traffic noise, and slightly more breathing room than the Tunjungan corridor.

Shangri-La Surabaya — the clear luxury leader in the city. Set in the Ciputra World complex, which includes a mall, waterpark, and convention centre. 422 rooms, large pool, multiple restaurants, spa. Rates from approximately IDR 1,800,000–4,000,000/night. The Shangri-La Horizon Club lounge is well-regarded for business travellers.

Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers — 388 rooms adjacent to the Galaxy Mall in the east of the city. Pool, meeting facilities, Club lounge. Approximately IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000/night. Better positioned for airport access than the Tunjungan properties.

The Westin Surabaya — connected to the Galaxy Mall complex in East Surabaya. Large modern rooms with Westin’s signature Heavenly Beds, a rooftop pool, and the Prego Italian restaurant. Best suited to those with business in the Rungkut industrial district. Approximately IDR 1,800,000–3,500,000/night.

The Arab Quarter and Chinatown

Wisma Ampel Guest House — a simple guesthouse within walking distance of the Ampel quarter, the most convenient budget base for exploring the Arab district and old port area. Rooms are clean with private bathrooms and air conditioning. Approximately IDR 180,000–280,000/night.

Ampel (the Arab Quarter around the Sunan Ampel mosque) and Chinatown (Jalan Kembang Jepun) are Surabaya’s most historically distinctive neighbourhoods. Budget accommodation exists here at IDR 150,000–350,000/night in small family guesthouses, mostly catering to pilgrims and domestic tourists. These areas suit history-focused visitors but are less convenient for most tourist activities.

Majapahit Hotel (formerly Oranje Hotel, Jalan Tunjungan) — Surabaya’s most historically significant property, a Dutch colonial hotel where the Indonesian flag was torn from the Dutch tricolour by nationalists in 1945. It retains period detail and operates as an active heritage attraction. Rates from approximately USD 80–130/night as of 2026.

Heritage Hotel Surabaya (Jalan Peneleh, near Ampel) — small boutique property in a Dutch colonial shophouse, 15 rooms. Approximately IDR 450,000–750,000/night. The most atmospheric place to stay in central Surabaya; the building predates Indonesian independence.

Day Trip Connections

Mount Bromo: Overnight tours from Surabaya depart from the Tunjungan area around 22:00–23:00, arriving at Cemoro Lawang for the pre-dawn crater viewpoint. Standard shared tours run approximately IDR 350,000–600,000/person including transport. For a more comfortable experience, private car hire runs IDR 700,000–1,200,000 for the full overnight return.

Malang: 1.5 hours by car south on the toll road. Batu (apple orchards and highland resort area) is a further 30 minutes. Day trip by shared transport possible; private car IDR 350,000–500,000 return.

Madura Island: Connected to Surabaya by the Suramadu Bridge (6 km). Remarkable for its traditional bull racing (Karapan Sapi, August–September), batik crafts, and fish markets. A half-day trip by car with the bridge crossing.

Transport Notes

Juanda International Airport (SUB) is approximately 20 km south of the city centre — 30–60 minutes by car depending on traffic. Airport bus Damri runs to several city points for IDR 30,000.

Within the city, Gojek and Grab are standard. Most city trips run IDR 15,000–50,000.

The Surabaya Gubeng and Surabaya Pasar Turi stations serve different train lines — confirm your arrival station when booking trains from Yogyakarta or Jakarta.

Booking Tips

  • Surabaya hotels are best value Sunday to Thursday — the city is primarily a business destination, and weekend leisure demand is lower than in Bandung or Yogyakarta.
  • Bromo tour logistics matter: if joining a 22:00 overnight departure, a late check-out hotel (or luggage storage arrangement) for departure day saves hassle.
  • JW Marriott and Shangri-La both run loyalty points deals worth checking if you hold SPG/Marriott Bonvoy or Shangri-La Golden Circle status.
  • Surabaya has fewer boutique hotel options than Yogyakarta — the mid-range market is dominated by chain hotels. For character, the Heritage Hotel on Jalan Peneleh is the standout independent option.
  • For Mount Bromo tours and East Java day trips from Surabaya — including the popular overnight Bromo sunrise and Ijen Blue Fire tours — booking in advance is essential as limited jeep and guide slots fill weeks ahead in peak season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Surabaya's best area for tourists to stay?
For most visitors, Gubeng (near the central train station) or the Tunjungan Plaza corridor gives the most practical base — major malls, restaurants, and transport connections are walkable or a short rideshare away. The Darmo neighbourhood is quieter and more residential, preferred for longer stays.
How far is Surabaya from Mount Bromo?
Mount Bromo is approximately 120–130 km south of Surabaya — about 3–4 hours by car or shared transport. Most visitors join organised overnight tours departing around 22:00 from Surabaya, arriving at the volcano viewpoint for sunrise. Alternatively, base at Cemoro Lawang village (1 hour from the viewpoint) for a more comfortable start.
Is Surabaya worth staying in for more than one night?
Yes, if you are interested in East Java's history and culinary culture. The Arab Quarter (Ampel), the Chinatown area, Heroes Monument, and the Submarine Museum are half a day each. Surabaya has an underrated food scene — rawon (black beef broth) and tahu tek (tofu salad) are worth seeking out. Two nights is comfortable; three if combining with a day trip to Malang (1.5 hours) or Tretes.
Are there good luxury hotels in Surabaya?
Yes — Shangri-La Surabaya is the clearest luxury benchmark. Sheraton Surabaya and JW Marriott are also strong. Rates are lower than equivalent Jakarta properties by approximately 20–30%, making Surabaya a relatively affordable destination for business-class travel.
