Banyuwangi is East Java’s easternmost regency capital - a port city facing Bali across the narrow Bali Strait, and the gateway to Kawah Ijen, one of Indonesia’s most dramatic natural phenomena. The turquoise acidic crater lake, flanked by electric-blue sulphuric flames visible only before dawn, draws thousands of visitors. Beyond Ijen, Banyuwangi is also the departure point for Baluran National Park (“Africa’s Little Africa in Java”), the Meru Betiri rainforest coast, and ferry connections to Gilimanuk in Bali.

Banyuwangi city centre

The town itself - central around Jalan Ahmad Yani and the alun-alun - has the widest range of accommodation and the best access to restaurants and services.

Budget (IDR 150,000–350,000 / USD 9–22 per night)

  • Ijen Resto & Guest House - Popular backpacker guesthouse near the town centre, well-used by Ijen trekkers. Rooms from IDR 150,000–280,000 per night. The in-house restaurant serves budget Indonesian food and the staff organise Ijen tours reliably.

  • Luminor Hotel Banyuwangi - Affordable chain hotel in a central location with clean rooms and consistent service. Rates from IDR 250,000–380,000 per night. A step above guesthouses with better air conditioning and wi-fi.

Mid-range (IDR 400,000–1,000,000 / USD 25–62 per night)

  • Ketapang Indah Hotel - Banyuwangi’s most established hotel, set in a long beachfront property on the Bali Strait coast. Pool, restaurant, and beach access. Rates from IDR 500,000–1,000,000 per night. The sea-facing rooms have views across to Bali - Gunung Agung is visible on clear mornings. Good Ijen tour coordination.

  • Aston Banyuwangi Hotel & Conference Centre - Modern business hotel in central Banyuwangi with pool, restaurant, and full meeting facilities. Rates from IDR 500,000–950,000 per night. The best all-round option in town for travellers who want consistent standards.

Boutique and resort (IDR 1,000,000–2,500,000 / USD 62–156 per night)

  • Jiwa Jawa Resort Ijen - Boutique eco-resort in the forested hills on the road toward Ijen crater, approximately 30 km from the trailhead. Wooden bungalows surrounded by jungle, pool, and a good restaurant. Rates from IDR 1,000,000–2,200,000 per night. The setting is peaceful and the proximity to Ijen makes early-morning departures less painful. Book directly to secure Ijen tour packages.

  • Banyuwangi Ijen Resort & Villas - Resort property in the highlands between Banyuwangi and Ijen with villa-style rooms, pool, and mountain views. Rates from IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000 per night. Better suited to couples and families who want the crater experience with a comfortable base.

Practical notes

Ijen permits and fees: As of 2026, Ijen requires advance online booking of entry permits (approximately IDR 150,000–200,000 per person). Permits sell out fast on weekends - book at least 48 hours ahead via the national park’s official booking system. Gas masks for sulphur are essential; rent at the trailhead for IDR 30,000–50,000.

Baluran National Park: About 40 km north of Banyuwangi, Baluran’s savannah zone (Bekol) is famous for wild bull (banteng) and Java’s few remaining wild cattle. Entry IDR 150,000 for foreign visitors. Best visited early morning from Banyuwangi for a day trip.

Ferry to Bali: Ketapang port is 4 km from Banyuwangi centre. Ferries to Gilimanuk (Bali) run 24 hours, departure every 30 minutes. Crossing takes 30–45 minutes. Foot passenger IDR 10,000; car approximately IDR 200,000–250,000.

Booking tips

Ijen draws visitors year-round but peaks in July–August (dry season, best blue-flame visibility) and around Indonesian school holidays. During these windows, boutique jungle resorts and better town hotels fill well in advance - book Jiwa Jawa Resort and Ketapang Indah at least two weeks ahead for July–August.

Ijen permits sell out faster than accommodation. Secure the official entry permit via the national park’s online booking system before finalising hotels. As of 2026, weekday permits were available 2–4 weeks ahead; weekend permits sold out much faster. If you can’t secure a permit for your intended date, there’s no point booking accommodation.

For town hotels, confirm at booking whether Ijen tour pickup at 01:00–02:00 AM is included - most Banyuwangi hotels can coordinate this. Independent minibus charters to the Paltuding trailhead run IDR 200,000–350,000 per person from the main hotel strip.

Staying closer to Ijen - at hotels in Licin or Paltuding near the trailhead - cuts travel time to 20–30 minutes rather than 1.5 hours from town, but the options near the crater are fewer and more expensive relative to quality.
How much does accommodation in Banyuwangi cost?
Budget guesthouses in Banyuwangi cost IDR 150,000–350,000 per night (USD 9–22). Mid-range hotels run IDR 400,000–1,000,000 per night (USD 25–62). The boutique and resort options near Ijen and around town reach IDR 1,000,000–2,500,000 per night (USD 62–156).
What time do Ijen crater tours depart and which hotel areas are most convenient?
Most Ijen tours depart from Banyuwangi at 01:00–02:00 AM to reach the trailhead at Paltuding by 02:30–03:00 AM and summit by around 04:30–05:00 AM - in time for the blue flame phenomenon visible before sunrise. Hotels along the main road toward Licin (southwest of town) offer slightly earlier pickup and shorter drives. Independent travellers can hire an ojek or charter a car directly from the trailhead parking area.
