Lombok’s day trip options split into three distinct types: mountain adventures centred on Rinjani, island-hopping across the Gili archipelago, and beach circuits along the south coast. Unlike Bali where most day trips require significant traffic management, Lombok’s roads are genuinely fast outside the Mataram urban area — the south coast from Kuta Lombok to Pink Beach is a 45-minute drive on a sealed road, and Bangsal Harbour for the Gili Islands is under an hour from Senggigi. The constraint is transport rather than distance.
Mount Rinjani: Foothills, Waterfalls, and the Summit Option

Mount Rinjani (3,726m) is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and the defining natural landmark of Lombok. A full summit trek requires 2–4 days minimum and should not be rushed — the final approach to the rim at 3,726m is demanding and trails are steep. For day visitors, the options are the Senaru waterfalls on the north side and the Sembalun Valley walk on the east.
Senaru Waterfalls (Half-Day)
Senaru village sits at the northern trailhead at approximately 600m elevation. From the village, a well-maintained trail leads to Sendang Gile waterfall (20 minutes; IDR 20,000) and from there to Tiu Kelep, a powerful double-drop waterfall with a natural swimming pool beneath it (40 minutes further; total entry IDR 50,000). The water is cold, clean, and swimmable — Tiu Kelep pool is one of the better natural swimming spots on the island.
The round trip from Senaru takes 2–3 hours with swimming time. The trail is clear and well-signed; a guide is optional but adds context (IDR 100,000–150,000).
Sembalun Valley (Full Day)
Sembalun on the east side of Rinjani sits in a highland valley at 1,100m, surrounded by vegetable farms and strawberry fields with Rinjani’s summit dominating the skyline. The valley has a distinctive cool climate (18–24°C) and an almost Swiss pastoral character that contrasts sharply with Lombok’s coastal towns. A half-day walk through the valley and surrounding trails is manageable without a guide; longer routes toward the Plawangan crater rim require a registered guide (IDR 400,000–600,000 per group).
Sembalun access: 2.5 hours from Mataram by private car via Suela. The road climbs steeply through rice paddies before entering the highland plateau. No reliable public transport.
Multi-Day Rinjani Trek
For visitors with more time, the standard 2D/1N circuit goes: Senaru (Day 1) → Crater Rim camp (sunset views over Segara Anak crater lake) → Descent (Day 2). The 3D/2N version adds a crater lake descent and hot springs bath at the base. Book through a licensed operator: Rinjani Trek Ecotourism Program at Senaru (government-backed, fixed pricing) costs approximately IDR 1,500,000–2,500,000 per person for 2 days depending on group size. Private operators in Senggigi and Kuta Lombok offer comparable packages.
The Gili Islands: Day Trips by Fast Boat

All three Gili Islands are accessible as day trips from Lombok. Return boats run until approximately 5pm, giving a comfortable 6–7 hours on the island.
Gili Trawangan (Gili T)
The largest island — beach bars, diving centres, and a concentration of accommodation along the east coast. For a day trip, the east coast is good for swimming and the reef directly offshore has sea turtles reliably visible while snorkelling (no boat needed). A visitor tax of approximately IDR 50,000 is collected on arrival. Snorkel hire is available at the beach (IDR 30,000–50,000/day). Walking the full island circuit takes 1.5–2 hours on foot or 45 minutes by bicycle (bike hire IDR 30,000–50,000/day). The main strip has good cafes and warungs for lunch — Kayu Cafe and OMG serve solid food at IDR 50,000–120,000 per dish.
Gili Air
A quieter alternative with a genuine village feel and one of the better reefs in the Lombok Strait for snorkelling. The east side has calm, clear water and regular turtle sightings. Good dive operators (Blue Marlin and Oceans 5 are established names) offer fun dives from USD 30–40. The island is small enough to circle on foot in under 30 minutes.
Gili Meno
The most remote and quietest island — minimal development, no nightlife, and a small internal lake with bird populations. Best for a genuinely peaceful day of snorkelling and lying on the beach.
Logistics: From Bangsal Harbour, public slow boats (IDR 20,000–35,000) depart when full, roughly every 1–2 hours. Private speedboats (IDR 250,000–400,000) depart on demand. Last public boat back to Bangsal typically around 4:30–5pm — confirm on arrival. For Kuta Lombok-based visitors, consider a private boat from Tembowong Beach (see southwest Gilis below) rather than driving 1.5 hours north to Bangsal.
Southwest Gili Islands: Gili Nanggu and Gili Gede

The southwest Gili cluster (Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak, Gili Gede) are far less visited than the northern Gilis and can be reached by boat from Tembowong Beach, 15 km west of Kuta Lombok. Gili Nanggu has a small resort and consistently clear water — the snorkelling on the reef fringe is excellent and the island sees a fraction of the visitor numbers of Gili Trawangan. A private boat from Tembowong for 2–4 people costs approximately IDR 300,000–600,000 return; negotiate at the beach with the local boat operators. No regular public boat service.
South Coast Beach Circuit

The south coast between Kuta Lombok and Pink Beach is Lombok’s most scenic coastal stretch — a sequence of bays separated by volcanic headlands, each with a different character. By scooter or with a private driver, covering 4–5 beaches in a day is manageable on sealed roads.
Recommended circuit from Kuta Lombok:
- Selong Belanak (25 km west): Wide bay with gentle surf and beginner surf schools. Good for an early swim — arrives calm before 10am. Entry IDR 10,000.
- Mawun Beach (22 km west): Enclosed crescent bay with calm eastern water. Basic warung. Entry IDR 10,000.
- Kuta Lombok beach: The town beach for lunch — Milk and Madu and Laut Biru restaurants are good options at IDR 50,000–100,000 per dish.
- Tanjung Aan (10 km east): The best beach on the south coast. Double crescent bay, turquoise water, good swimming. Entry IDR 10,000.
- Bukit Merese viewpoint: The headland above Tanjung Aan gives the panoramic view that most south coast photos use. 10-minute walk from the Tanjung Aan car park. Entry IDR 10,000.
- Pink Beach (Pantai Tangsi) (45 km east): Lombok’s famous pink sand beach. Entry IDR 20,000–25,000. Allow 45 minutes from Kuta Lombok on a sealed but narrow road.
Timing note: Start by 8am to reach Selong Belanak before midday heat. The Pink Beach leg is optional for tired drivers; it adds 45 minutes each way.
Sembalun Strawberry Farms (Half-Day)

Sembalun Valley’s highland climate (cooler by 10–15°C compared to coastal Lombok) supports strawberry cultivation unusual for tropical Indonesia. Several farms along the main valley road allow visitors to pick their own fruit directly from the bushes (IDR 20,000–30,000 for a 30-minute picking session with a small punnet to take away). The valley also has garlic and vegetable farms, a scenic highland road, and clear views of Rinjani’s south face. The drive through the village of Suela on the approach adds a further hour but passes through rarely-photographed Sasak rice village landscapes.
Practical Planning Notes
Transport reality: Outside Mataram and Senggigi, Lombok has no practical public transport for day trips. Every destination above requires either a scooter or a private driver. Budget IDR 400,000–600,000 per day for a car with driver — this is the most efficient and most common approach.
Best day trip base by destination:
- Rinjani (Senaru): Senggigi or Mataram, depart by 6:30am
- Gili Islands (Bangsal): Senggigi is the closest base (45 minutes to Bangsal)
- South coast circuit: Kuta Lombok is the ideal base for the beach sequence
- Southwest Gilis: Kuta Lombok, 15 km to Tembowong Beach
Seasonal note: May–October (dry season) gives reliable boat crossings and clear mountain views. November–April can bring afternoon rain that shortens beach days and occasionally cancels Gili fast boat crossings. Morning departures are better year-round.
