Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia and one of the finest examples of Hindu architecture in Southeast Asia - a 9th-century Shivaite complex of 240 temples, the three largest dedicated to the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). The site was commissioned by the Sanjaya dynasty of the Mataram kingdom and completed around 850 CE - making it almost contemporary with Borobudur, its Buddhist counterpart 40 km to the west. Both were abandoned following the 10th-century volcanic eruptions and subsequent power shift to East Java.
Wherever you sleep, pre-book your Prambanan Temple entry ticket or tour so the visit itself needs no queueing.
The Shiva temple (Candi Shiva Mahadeva), at 47 metres, dominates the compound and has been substantially restored over the 20th and 21st centuries. The bas-relief frieze around the base depicts scenes from the Ramayana epic - the same story told in the evening Sendratari Ramayana dance performance staged at the open-air theatre adjacent to the compound on selected evenings.

Which base to choose
Near Prambanan (village guesthouse): For those who want the early-morning temple visit without commuting - and for Ramayana ballet evening performances, staying nearby avoids a late-night return journey to Yogyakarta.
Yogyakarta (budget area): For backpackers and independent travellers combining Prambanan with Borobudur and Yogyakarta’s Kraton, Malioboro, and Prawirotaman cultural sights.
Yogyakarta (mid-range): For those who want city comforts, reliable restaurant options, and day-trip flexibility across Central Java’s main sights.
Prambanan is large enough for a full half-day but small enough that adding Candi Sewu (within the same complex) and the nearby Candi Plaosan (1.5 km north, Buddhist, less visited) fills a complete morning without feeling rushed.
