Sidemen is a village valley in Karangasem regency, east Bali - about 1.5 hours east of Ubud on the road that leads eventually toward Amed and the diving coast. The valley floor is a patchwork of rice terraces stepping up toward the lower slopes of Mount Agung (3,142 m), and the walks between paddies, through bamboo groves and along irrigation channels, are the main daily activity. Sidemen is also a centre for traditional Balinese silk weaving - the songket weavers here produce ceremonial cloth using hand-looms in a tradition that predates the tourist industry by centuries.

Sidemen valley

Accommodation is spread along the valley road and up onto the terraced hillsides. The best rooms face east for Mount Agung views.

Budget (IDR 200,000–400,000 / USD 12–25 per night)

  • Sidemen Homestay - Simple family-run guesthouse in the valley. Rooms from IDR 200,000–350,000 per night. Basic air conditioning, shared or en-suite bathroom, and home-cooked breakfast included. The most affordable way to experience the Sidemen valley setting.

  • Pondok Wisata Lihat Sawah - Rice-field view guesthouse with terrace rooms. Rates from IDR 250,000–400,000 per night. The name translates to “accommodation with rice field views” - accurate.

Mid-range (IDR 500,000–1,500,000 / USD 31–94 per night)

  • Saraswati de Bisma Sidemen - Boutique property in the valley with pool villas and terrace rooms facing the rice fields and Agung. Rates from IDR 700,000–1,500,000 per night. One of the better mid-range options for combining a pool with the authentic Sidemen landscape.

  • Tirta Arum Bungalows - Small lodge in the rice terraces with bungalow rooms and a pool. Rates from IDR 500,000–1,000,000 per night. Peaceful and well-positioned in the valley.

  • Sawah Indah Villa Sidemen - Villa property set among the terraces with a private pool and full cook service available. Rates from IDR 900,000–2,000,000 per night. The pool-terrace combination with rice field views is a strong option for couples.

Retreat and villa tier (IDR 1,500,000–5,000,000 / USD 94–312 per night)

  • Samanvaya Luxury Resort & Spa - Sidemen’s finest property - a hillside retreat with private pool villas facing Mount Agung across the rice terraces. Rates from IDR 2,500,000–5,000,000 per night. The Agung-view infinity pool is exceptional. Spa treatments and a restaurant using local ingredients. For those who want complete luxury in a completely unspoilt setting.

Practical notes

Rice terrace walks: The Sidemen valley walk - roughly circular, 3–4 hours, through rice paddies, irrigation channels, and bamboo - is the area’s main activity. No marked trail; ask your accommodation to point you toward the usual route or to arrange a local guide (IDR 50,000–100,000). Best walked early morning when Agung is visible and the light is soft.

Songket weaving: Several weaving workshops in Sidemen village accept visitors to watch the hand-loom process. The finished songket cloth (gold and silver thread on silk or cotton) starts from IDR 300,000 for small pieces; ceremonial cloth runs IDR 2,000,000–10,000,000. Do not haggle aggressively - these are artisans at work.

Getting to Sidemen: No public transport serves Sidemen village directly. Charter a car from Ubud (IDR 300,000–450,000, 1.5 hours) or from Sanur/Denpasar (IDR 400,000–600,000, 2 hours). Alternatively, rent a scooter in Ubud and take the Rendang road east through the mountains - the scenery is exceptional.

Booking tips

Sidemen is increasingly popular as a quieter east Bali alternative to Ubud. Samanvaya and other villa-tier properties book out weeks ahead during peak European summer (July–August) and Christmas–New Year. Mid-range villas like Puri Lumbung fill within days for these dates. Book a minimum of three weeks ahead for high-season stays.

Specify east-facing, Agung-view rooms whenever possible - properties typically have both valley-facing and road-facing rooms at the same price. Always ask at booking, as staff rarely volunteer the orientation distinction.

Getting to Sidemen requires a charter or pre-arranged transfer - there is no Grab or metered taxi in the valley. Confirm at booking whether the property arranges airport or Ubud transfers, or whether you arrange independently. Prices range IDR 300,000–600,000 depending on origin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sidemen like compared to Ubud?
Sidemen is quieter, less developed, and arguably more scenic than Ubud. The valley sits beneath Mount Agung - Bali's highest and most sacred volcano - and the rice terrace views are among the most dramatic in Bali. Unlike Ubud, Sidemen has no main restaurant strip, no nightlife, and minimal shops. It's a destination for people who want walking, yoga, and views rather than the cultural activity of Ubud. The area suits longer stays of 3–5 nights for those who want complete decompression.
Is Mount Agung visible from Sidemen?
Yes - on clear mornings (typically before 09:00), Agung fills the entire east-facing view from most villas and rice terrace walks. By mid-morning, cloud typically builds around the summit. For the best view, stay in a property facing east and be awake at dawn.
How much does accommodation in Sidemen cost?
Budget guesthouses in Sidemen run IDR 200,000–400,000 per night (USD 12–25). Mid-range villas and lodges cost IDR 500,000–1,500,000 per night (USD 31–94). Upscale villa retreats reach IDR 1,500,000–5,000,000 per night (USD 94–312).
