Pangandaran is a beach peninsula on the south coast of West Java’s Ciamis regency - roughly 7 hours by road from Bandung and 10 hours from Jakarta. It’s the most developed beach destination in Java outside of the far west (Carita, Anyer) and far east (Banyuwangi coast). The peninsula has beaches on both sides: west-facing for calm swimming and east-facing for stronger surf. At the peninsula tip, Pangandaran National Park protects a patch of lowland rainforest with monkeys, deer, and a small beach. Green Canyon (Cukang Taneuh), 30 km west, is the area’s most popular day trip.

Pangandaran town and west beach

The main guesthouse and hotel strip runs parallel to the west beach - the calmer side, preferred for swimming. The market, seafood restaurants, and main entrance to the national park are all here.

Budget (IDR 100,000–250,000 / USD 6–15 per night)

  • Bulak Laut Hotel Pangandaran - Classic beachside budget guesthouse on the west beach road, steps from the sand. Rooms from IDR 120,000–220,000 per night. Fan and air-conditioned options. One of the most-booked budget options in the area.

  • Mini Hotel Pangandaran - Simple guesthouse in the main town, a few minutes from the beach. Rooms from IDR 100,000–180,000 per night. Good for backpackers and solo travellers on a tight budget.

Practical notes

Green Canyon (Cukang Taneuh): 30 km west of Pangandaran, accessible by ojek or charter vehicle. The attraction is a river canyon with emerald-green water - boat tours navigate the canyon for IDR 100,000–150,000 per person. The natural pool at the canyon head is popular for swimming. Best visited early morning before crowds arrive.

National park: Entry to Pangandaran National Park at the peninsula tip costs IDR 25,000 for domestic visitors, IDR 75,000 for foreigners. The jungle trail through the park takes 1.5–2 hours and passes through lowland forest with macaques, leaf monkeys, and barking deer. The south beach at the tip has strong surf and is better for watching than swimming.

Getting to Pangandaran: From Bandung: 5.5–7 hours by express bus (Damri or private bus companies). From Yogyakarta: 7–9 hours via Cilacap and ferry. No train serves Pangandaran directly - the nearest station is Banjar (50 km north), with bus or ojek connections onward.

Booking tips

Pangandaran is Java’s most popular domestic beach destination and fills completely during Idul Fitri (dates shift annually), the June–July school break, and Christmas–New Year. During these windows, every hotel tier from budget to upper sells out - book a minimum of two weeks ahead. Weekends throughout the year also see significant domestic short-break traffic from Bandung and Jakarta.

The exception is Idul Fitri peak: prices spike and accommodation becomes extremely tight across the entire area. If your dates overlap with the Eid holiday window, either book well ahead or adjust dates.

For Green Canyon day trips, book through your hotel rather than independent operators at the boat dock - guesthouses with established operator relationships reduce the risk of boat quality issues. Green Canyon boats seat 3–5 people; solo travellers can usually join groups through their accommodation at the standard rate.
