Mataram is the capital of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province and Lombok’s largest city - a sprawling urban centre that merges with the neighbouring cities of Ampenan (the old port town) and Cakranegara (the commercial centre). The city has a visible mix of Balinese Hindu, Sasak Muslim, and Chinese merchant communities - particularly around Pura Meru (Lombok’s largest Hindu temple) and the Chinese heritage district of Cakranegara. It’s a practical city rather than a scenic one, best used as a transit hub.
Cakranegara (commercial centre)
Cakranegara is Mataram’s main commercial district - home to the largest shopping centres, restaurants, and the bulk of the city’s hotels. Most visitors arriving at Lombok Airport who stop in Mataram stay here.

Ampenan (old port town)

- Jukung Guest House - Simple guesthouse in the Ampenan quarter. Rooms from IDR 150,000–250,000 per night. Good for travellers interested in the old Dutch-era port atmosphere.

Practical notes
Pura Meru: Lombok’s largest Hindu temple in Cakranegara is free to visit with a sarong (loaned at entrance). The three-tiered meru towers represent Gunung Rinjani, Gunung Agung, and Gunung Bromo. Open daily 06:00–18:00.
Markets: Pasar Cakranegara is Mataram’s main wet market - best visited 06:00–09:00 for fresh produce, Sasak fabrics, and local snacks. Mataram Mall and Lombok Epicentrum Mall have supermarkets for supplies.
Onward transport: Mandalika bus terminal in Bertais (south Mataram) handles most long-distance routes across Lombok. Cidomo horse carts still operate around the old Ampenan area. Bluebird taxis and Grab work across the city.
Booking tips
Mataram is primarily a business hotel market - occupancy is driven by Indonesian government and corporate travel, not seasonal tourism. Mid-range and upper-tier hotels like Aston Inn and Swiss-Belinn can sell out during national conferences and regional government events with little warning. If visiting for business reasons or staying over a weekday, book at least a few days ahead.
For one-night airport transit stays - the most common Mataram use case - Amaris Hotel and Aston Inn are the most reliable options. Both are well-reviewed on Booking.com with consistent standards. Confirm that your hotel can arrange a car or call Grab for the morning transfer to Lombok Airport; the 25-km drive at peak hours takes up to 45 minutes.
Cakranegara is the most practical neighbourhood for all amenities. Ampenan is historically interesting but adds transfer time for airport connections.
