Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi province and the main gateway to some of Indonesia’s finest marine environments. The city itself is a working port town - functional rather than scenic, with a Manadonese food culture that’s worth a proper meal but not much reason to linger. The reason most visitors come is Bunaken Marine Park, a 15-minute to 45-minute boat ride offshore, with wall dives that drop hundreds of metres into the Celebes Sea.

Accommodation in Manado therefore splits neatly into two types: city-centre hotels for transit, business, and those exploring North Sulawesi overland; and dive resorts on Bunaken Island itself for those whose primary purpose is the marine park.
Manado city centre
The city’s hotels are concentrated around the Wenang district and the Boulevard shopping area. Neither is particularly atmospheric, but both are practical for transit and as a base for Minahasa day trips.

- Budget hotels in Manado - Budget guesthouses in the city centre area run IDR 220,000–400,000 per night with air-conditioning, private bathroom, and basic breakfast. Good for a transit night before or after Bunaken.

-

Bunaken Island: live inside the marine park
Bunaken Island sits inside the 89,000-hectare Bunaken National Marine Park and has a small accommodation scene built entirely around diving. There are no international chain hotels here - accommodation is run by dive operators and small guesthouses, and the experience is fundamentally different from a city hotel.
Most Bunaken resorts price as dive packages - accommodation, three meals, and a set number of boat dives per day - rather than room-only rates. This simplifies budgeting and removes the need to organise equipment or boats separately.
Budget packages (USD 50–80 per person per night, inclusive)
- Budget dive guesthouses, Bunaken - The most affordable Bunaken guesthouses offer basic fan-cooled rooms, meals, and boat dives from approximately USD 50–70 per person per night. Clean, simple, and directly on the beach. The reef is the accommodation here - the room itself is where you sleep between dives.
Mid-range packages (USD 80–150 per person per night, inclusive)
- Beachfront dive resorts on Bunaken - Bungalows with sea views, daily boat dives to the major wall sites and meals included. Packages are typically around USD 90–140 per person per night. Many resorts here sell direct rather than through booking sites, so confirm availability and inclusions before you travel.
Liveaboards: Bunaken and Lembeh combined
For divers wanting to cover both Bunaken and the Lembeh Strait in a single trip, a liveaboard is the most efficient option. The Lembeh Strait - one of the world’s best muck-diving destinations - is 2 hours east of Manado; combining it with Bunaken’s walls requires either a 5-hour daily round trip or, better, sleeping on the water. Most Manado liveaboards run 5–7 day Bunaken–Lembeh combination itineraries.
- Liveaboards from Manado - Mid-range liveaboards operating Bunaken–Lembeh circuits from Manado, with en-suite cabins and 3–4 dives per day. Rates typically USD 150–250 per person per night inclusive. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July–August peak season.

Which Manado accommodation option suits you?
Manado city hotel: Right for transit nights, business visits, and those using Manado as a base for overland North Sulawesi exploration (Tomohon, Tangkoko, Minahasa highlands). A mid-range city hotel and day trips out is the most flexible approach.
Bunaken dive resort: Right for anyone whose primary purpose is diving or snorkelling in the marine park. The combination of immediate reef access, package pricing, and the island’s atmosphere makes Bunaken a fundamentally better experience than doing boat day-trips from Manado city. Stay 3–5 nights minimum to justify the logistics.
For those who want both - city exploration and diving - a practical split is two nights in Manado city to start (Tangkoko day trip, city restaurants) followed by three nights on Bunaken, returning to Manado for the airport.
