The Dieng Plateau is a high volcanic plateau in Central Java’s Kedu Range, sitting at approximately 2,000 metres above sea level. It holds one of Java’s oldest complexes of Hindu temples (7th–8th century), several active volcanic craters, and coloured thermal lakes. On clear mornings, the Sikunir summit viewpoint delivers a sunrise over Java’s volcanic chain visible as far as Merapi. The plateau is also famous among Indonesians for the dreadlocked rambut gembel children - a local spiritual tradition - and for its agricultural produce, including carica fruit, potatoes, and purwaceng medicinal plants.
Dieng village
Nearly all accommodation is concentrated in and around Dieng village itself, along the main road through the plateau. Walking distance between guesthouses, the temples, and the trailhead for Sikunir.
Budget homestays (IDR 100,000–200,000 / USD 6–12 per night)
Dieng’s budget accommodation is almost entirely in the form of family-run homestays - simple rooms in local homes, typically cold-water (hot bucket bath available on request in some), with thin blankets and basic food. Expect: a bed, a fan heater or electric blanket in the better ones, and family cooking.
-
Bu Djono Homestay - One of Dieng’s most-recommended homestays, run by a local family with warm hospitality. Rooms from IDR 100,000–175,000 per night including breakfast and herbal jamu drink. Staff will wake you at 04:00 for Sikunir without fail.
-
Homestay Alfian - Simple family guesthouse popular with young Indonesian travellers. Rooms from IDR 120,000–200,000 per night. Common room with gas heater - a significant comfort advantage on cold nights.
Mid-range guesthouses (IDR 200,000–450,000 / USD 12–28 per night)
-
Gunung Mas Hotel Dieng - Small hotel in Dieng village with proper en-suite rooms, hot water showers, and a restaurant. Rates from IDR 250,000–400,000 per night. The most comfortable mid-range option on the plateau, well-suited to couples and those not used to very basic homestay conditions.
-
Dieng Plateau Hotel - Small hotel near the main temple complex with hot water and better insulation than budget homestays. Rates from IDR 300,000–450,000 per night. Request a heater at check-in.
Wonosobo as an alternative base
If Dieng’s accommodation feels too limited or cold, the town of Wonosobo (26 km from Dieng, 45 minutes by angkot or ojek) has a wider range of hotels at similar or lower prices, with more restaurants and better hot water. Hotels like Swiss-Belhotel Wonosobo and several Aston-brand options offer significantly more comfort for IDR 400,000–800,000 per night. Wonosobo works as a base if you hire a driver for the 04:00 AM Sikunir departure - it adds 45 minutes but removes the cold-night problem.

Practical notes
Sikunir hike: The trailhead is approximately 3 km from Dieng village at Sembungan - the highest village in Java at 2,300 metres. Depart the trailhead by 04:30–05:00 AM for sunrise (walk is 45–60 minutes). Entry ticket approximately IDR 15,000. Bring a torch, warm layers (base, fleece, wind shell at minimum), and proper footwear for the steep volcanic path.
Temple complex: Arjuna temple complex (7th–8th century Shiva temples) opens at 06:30. Entry IDR 50,000 for foreign visitors. The Dieng Museum is adjacent and covers the plateau’s volcanic geology and the rambut gembel tradition.
Food: Mie ongklok (local noodle soup) and carica papaya dessert are the plateau specialties. Most warungs near the market serve both for IDR 10,000–25,000. Purwaceng hot drink (a local medicinal root, said to be an energy tonic) is sold everywhere.
