Bunaken Island is the centrepiece of Bunaken Marine National Park in North Sulawesi - 8.08 square kilometres of island with a traditional fishing village and the kind of coral reef walls that made it one of the world’s first marine parks when it was gazetted in 1991. The island sits 8 km off Manado in the Celebes Sea; the speedboat crossing takes 30–40 minutes. Most visitors are divers, though snorkellers and the reef-curious non-diver can do well here too.
Accommodation on the island ranges from simple family guesthouses in the fishing village to purpose-built dive resorts with boat platforms and equipment rooms on the beach. Nothing is especially luxurious by international standards - this is a dive destination, and the accommodation philosophy is that the reef is the attraction.

Practical notes
Marine park entry fee: The Bunaken National Park entry fee is IDR 150,000 per day for foreign visitors, payable at the park office on arrival. Most dive resorts include this in their packages or will collect it on your behalf.
Electricity: Bunaken Island has generator power, typically available 18:00–06:00 (hours vary by property). Charge dive computers, cameras, and phones during this window.
Getting there: Public speedboats from Manado’s Calaca pier depart mornings (IDR 30,000–50,000 per person). Charter a private speedboat for greater flexibility (IDR 400,000–600,000 per crossing). Most Bunaken dive resorts will arrange their own transfer on request.
When to go: April–October for best visibility and calm conditions. The peak of the dry season (June–August) brings the most consistent 20–30 metre visibility on the walls.
