Manado Travel Guide: Gateway to Bunaken Diving and North Sulawesi
North Sulawesi's capital — Bunaken Marine Park, Tomohon flower market, Tangkoko wildlife, and famously adventurous Manado cuisine.
Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi and the primary access point for Bunaken National Marine Park, one of the world’s most celebrated dive destinations. The city itself is a compact, lively port with a Christian majority — unusual in Indonesia and reflected in the proliferation of churches, the Sunday market culture, and the famously unrestricted local cuisine. Manado’s culinary reputation is either a selling point or a warning depending on your disposition: the local food includes RW (dog meat) and paniki (fruit bat), alongside some genuinely excellent dishes based on cakalang (skipjack tuna) and rica-rica (chilli-heavy) spice pastes. Both the diving and the food make Manado memorable.
Bunaken National Marine Park
Bunaken is the reason most international travellers come to Manado. The marine park covers 890 square kilometres of ocean around five islands — Bunaken, Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain, and Siladen — and contains some of the highest coral diversity in the world. The park sits at the junction of the Pacific and Indian Oceans and receives nutrient-rich currents that sustain extraordinary fish life.
Park entry: approximately IDR 150,000 per person as of 2026, paid at the park office or on arrival at Bunaken island.
The island of Bunaken itself is 30 minutes from Manado harbour by fast boat. Most dives focus on the steep wall systems on the island’s northern shore — vertical walls dropping hundreds of metres with passing pelagic fish, pygmy seahorses in sea fans, and Napoleon wrasse in open water. Recommended dive sites include Lekuan I, II, and III (walls), Mandolin (open-water schooling fish), and Fukui Point (reef top with current).
Dive operators: Bunaken has several resident dive centres on the island and additional operators based in Manado. Expect to pay approximately USD 35–60 per fun dive including equipment; multi-dive packages and accommodation packages significantly reduce the per-dive cost. Operators include Froggies, Two Fish, and Living Sea — all with consistent reputations.
Snorkelling is viable on the reef top at Bunaken but the wall diving is the primary attraction; snorkellers miss the signature experiences.
What to See from Manado
Tomohon is 45 minutes south of Manado at 800 metres altitude, cooler and surrounded by active volcanoes. The town’s extreme market (Pasar Extremme) sells the unusual proteins for which North Sulawesi cuisine is known — if you want to see this, go early in the morning. The area around Tomohon is dominated by Gunung Lokon and Gunung Mahawu, both active. Mahawu offers a guided crater rim hike of approximately 2–3 hours (guides from Tomohon approximately IDR 100,000–150,000).
Tangkoko Nature Reserve is 3 hours northeast of Manado and one of the best places in the world to see spectral tarsiers and black-crested macaques. Tarsiers are nocturnal and extremely small (they weigh approximately 100 grams); the night walks led by park rangers almost always yield sightings. Entry to the reserve costs approximately IDR 50,000; guided walks are approximately IDR 150,000–250,000 per group depending on duration.
The reserve also hosts the maleo bird — a megapode that buries its eggs in geothermal sand to incubate, hatching chicks that emerge fully feathered. Sightings require luck and a good guide.
Klabat volcano is the highest peak in North Sulawesi (1,995m) and accessible from the town of Airmadidi (45 minutes from Manado). The summit hike takes 6–8 hours return and requires a registered guide (approximately IDR 300,000–400,000 for the group). The summit offers views across the Sulawesi Sea on clear days.
Where to Eat in Manado
Rumah Makan Wakeke is the most famous Manado restaurant, a simple establishment near the city centre that has served local food for decades. The cakalang fufu (smoked skipjack tuna in rica-rica chilli sauce) and cakalang pampis (shredded tuna with coconut and chilli) are excellent and adventurous only in their flavour. Budget approximately IDR 60,000–100,000 per person. The menu also includes RW and paniki; these are clearly labelled and entirely optional.
Rumah Makan Dotulong is a more central, slightly smarter seafood restaurant with a broader menu. Budget approximately IDR 80,000–150,000 per person.
Café Tinoor sits on the Tomohon road at approximately 700 metres altitude and serves Indonesian food with views across Manado Bay. Budget approximately IDR 100,000–200,000 per person; the drive up justifies a meal stop.

Getting to Manado
Sam Ratulangi Airport (MDC) is 15 kilometres from the city centre. Taxis from the airport operate on a fixed tariff of approximately IDR 80,000–120,000 to the city. Direct flights connect Manado with Jakarta (3.5 hours), Makassar (2 hours), Ternate (1 hour), and Singapore (2.5 hours). Manado is the gateway for onward travel to the North Maluku islands, including Ternate and Tidore.
Practical Notes
The best months for diving are October through April, when visibility is highest and seas are calmest. June through August brings stronger currents at Bunaken and rougher crossing conditions.
The city centre is compact and walkable for short distances, but the harbour (for Bunaken boats) and the airport require transport. Grab operates in Manado and is the easiest option.
