Waisak (Vesak) at Borobudur

Waisak (also spelled Vesak or Waisyak) commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha — three events believed to have occurred on the same day of the lunar calendar. In Indonesia, the day is a national public holiday, and the most significant observance takes place at Borobudur in Central Java, the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world.

The Ceremony at Borobudur

The 2026 ceremony falls on 31 May, timed to the full moon. Thousands of Buddhist monks and pilgrims travel to Borobudur from across Indonesia and from countries including Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan and Nepal. The procession begins at dawn at Mendut Temple, around 3 kilometres from Borobudur, and moves along a ceremonial route before arriving at Borobudur itself.

At full moon, the main ceremony takes place on Borobudur’s upper terraces. Monks in orange and white robes chant sutras, candles are lit across the temple, and the atmosphere is one of genuine solemnity and contemplation. The moment of the full moon — often around 10pm to midnight depending on the lunar calendar — is when thousands of candles and lanterns are released or placed along the temple’s circular terraces. Some ceremonies include the release of sky lanterns, which rise above the temple and over the surrounding forest.

Accessing the Ceremony

Borobudur is approximately 40 kilometres northwest of Yogyakarta. Tickets for the Waisak ceremony are separate from standard entry tickets and must be purchased in advance; demand is very high and the government limits attendance. Check the Borobudur Authority website (tarwisata.borobudurpark.com) or the Taman Wisata Candi app for current ticketing.

Accommodation near Borobudur — in the village of Borobudur or in Magelang — fills months in advance. Alternatively, many visitors stay in Yogyakarta and travel on the day by private driver or organised tour.

What to Bring and Wear

The ceremony extends from early morning through late evening. Bring a layer for the cool night air on the upper terraces, wear comfortable shoes, and carry water. Dress modestly as this is a religious event — no shorts or sleeveless tops on the temple. Photography is permitted but flash at night is prohibited.
